"IALA Maritime Buoyage Systems; Cardinal Marks common to both systems;Lights."

Same deal... I'm not asking anyone to do my homework for me - I'll be searching for a paragraph & picture for each thing I have to learn. I'll leave it here for others who are learning too.
If you have anything to add - thanks in advance.

A little background for people

In 1979, a body called International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) was formed to unify the World's buoyage system. They were largely successful, except we now have two similar systems, IALA 'A' and IALA 'B'.

The areas that use the 'B' system, are North and South America, Japan and the Philippines. The remainder of the World uses the 'A' system. The IALA systems are made up of five types of buoys, lateral cardinal, safe water, isolated danger and special.

In addition to the marks used in the IALA system, you will encounter navigation marks that do not follow this pattern. These will include: Lighthouses, Lightships, LANBYs (Large Automatic Navigation Buoys, generally replacing lightships), Light-floats (like a small light ship), Sectored lights and Leading lights.

I always remember them because the N and S point to safe water and for the other two, W looks like a W and the E if you squint your eyes makes an 'E' with the light coming through the middle

But I did smoke too much crack when I was younger

SPECIAL MARKS
Special marks indicate a special area or feature such as traffic separation marks, spoil, ground marks, cable or pipe lines marks including outfall pipes.
They can also define a junction of a channel or a channel within a channel, for example a channel for deep draught ships in a wide estuary where the limits of the channel for normal navigation are marked by red and green lateral buoys.
  • colour-yellow
  • topmark-when a topmark is carried, it takes the form of a single yellow X
  • light-it is yellow and the rhythm may be any other than those used for the white lights of cardinal, isolated danger and safe water marks

b]SAFE WATER MARKS[/b]
Safe water marks indicate that there is navigable water all around the mark for example mid channel or landfall buoy or the end of a channel implying that open, deep and safe water lies ahead. It is recognisable by its red and white vertical stripes and round top-mark.
  • colour - red and white vertical stripes
  • top mark - a single red sphere
  • light - exhibits a white light, isophase, occulting, or single long flash every 10 seconds (Single flash and a single sphere association may help you to remember its characteristics).

ISOLATED DANGER MARK
Isolated danger marks designate an isolated danger of limited extent which has navigable water all round it, for example an isolated shoal, rock or wreck. You can pass them on any side but do not pass too close.
  • b]colour[/b]-black with one or more red horizontal bands
  • top mark-two black spheres positioned vertically and clearly separated
  • light-a white flashing light showing groups of two flashes (or divisible by 2)

CARDINAL MARKS
A cardinal mark indicates where the best and safest water may be found and is used in conjunction with a compass. It shows where the mariner has safe passage. A cardinal mark may indicate:
  • the deepest water in an area, or
  • the safe side on which to pass a danger, or
  • a feature in a channel such as a bend, junction or an end of a shoal.
  • Top marks - Black double cones clearly separated.
  • Colours - Black and yellow horizontal bands with the position of the black band or bands relative to the respective cardinal points.
  • Lights - A cardinal mark exhibits a white light and its quadrant is distinguished by a specific group of quick or very quick flashes.

To assist in remembering cardinal marks, associate the number of flashes of each group with that of a clock face. That means that north is at twelve o'clock, east is at three o'clock, south is at six o'clock and west is at nine o'clock.
To ensure that no confusion occurs between east, south and west marks, a long flash immediately follows the six flashes of the south mark.

OA,

I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
It is a great resource for those of us with no "Royal" affiliations.

Thanks

? - sorry don't understand that bit
No drama...I've been having a ball getting it done. Had a few requests to keep going each week.

Should probably say that this weeks homework was brought to you by googling the following sites (affiliated with none):

http://www.sailtrain...ecial_marks.htm

Sorry if that came out kind of goofy.
What I meant was-
It is impossible for me to take an RYA course in Chicago.
I would have to travel to the Caribbean for the nearest possible offering.

By all means, please keep it going.

Also, remember that black water is deep (safe); yellow water is shallow (dangerous). Black above Yellow means that the deep, safe (Black) water is to the North of (Above) the shallow, dangerous (Yellow) water. Yellow above Black means that the deep, safe (Black) water is to the South of (Below) the shallow, dangerous (Yellow) water. E and W, just remember as Longboat says, that the arrows always point to the black; two arrows pointing towards each other look like a Wineglass; two arrows pointing away from each other look like an Egg.

It is a rare moment that you unexpectantly learn something here on SA that is remotely worthwhile.

OK, Friday & Wednesday thread excepted.
