Here's my release for Sevenstar SLAM Racing:

MELGES 24 WORLDS OFF TO FRUSTRATING START FOR FLEET

PORTO CERVO, ITA (3 June 2008) - Days 1 and 2 of the Volvo Melges 24 World Championship suffered from fickle and even non-existent breeze, with two fluky races on Sunday and none yesterday. A local yacht captain gave the most common of comments from the course: "This is not normal conditions for here." It certainly wan't "normal" to see the fleet hoisting spinnakers to reach the weather mark, yet that's precisely what happened during one of Sunday's races.

"I think we were very lucky," said Stefano Ciampalini, trimmer aboard 'Pilot Italia', which is leading the fleet with a 2,1 scoreline. Luck certainly played a big factor, though Pilot Italia displayed more than just luck in their three-bullet performance in the Pre-Worlds. "A good start is the most important part of this race when the wind is shifty - you must have the ability to tack freely that only comes from a good start," commented Ciampalini.

Bizarre conditions on Sunday sent many of the top boats into the middle of the fleet, including GBR 592 - 'Sevenstar SLAM'. "We had two good starts, but getting on the wrong side of a couple of shifts lost us quite a few places," commented skipper Simon Strauss. "Still, that's two races of a 12-race series, so we're not getting down on ourselves." Strauss, with double World Champion Bill Hardesty calling tactics, lies in 38th place, and they have plenty of company, with top Melges 24 teams littering the middle of the leader board. Many competitors picked for a possible podium finish have already sailed their throwout race, with former World Champ Nicola Celon aboard MARCHINGENIO in 56th, Gabrio Zandona aboard Joe Fly in 45th, Gabrielle Benussi on Alfa Spider in 29th, top Corinthian competitor Bruce Ayres and Monsoon in 40th, and Laser SB3 European Champ Geoff Carveth on Code Zero in 34th. Both Alina Helly Henson (Luca Valerio) and Saetta (Nicolo Bianchi) scored first place finishes in one race on Monday only to finish in 27th and 30th place respectively in the other of the day's two races.

BETTER CONDITIONS LIKELY FOR REMAINDER OF WEEK

PRO Peter Reggio has already decided to shoot for three races on Tuesday to gain back time lost yesterday, and with more stable winds from the West already blowing across Marina Porto Cervo, more consistent racing looks likely for the fleet as they work to qualify for Gold fleet ahead of the fleet splits on Wednesday. Forecasts for the region differ though, with some calling for the establishment of a strong Mistral sometime late Wednesday. Regardless of the forecast, one thing is certain in this fleet: The competition will be heating up substantially going into the splits on Wednesday, with many of the top Melges 24 teams likely to be fighting not just for a top 10 finish, but also to qualify in the Gold Fleet.

I'm headed to the dock now to clean the bottom of the boat - back in an hour or two with all the action, live. Thanks for watching!

We're just leaving the apartment now. We'll post the five videos I shot this morning when we get on the boat. Wind has picked up further, and we're currently looking at 12-15 knots of offshore breeze right now. Should be postcard perfect today, and we will get you tons of good info. Thanks for watching, and please be sure to send the link to the coverage to anyone you know who might find it interesting.

Also, thanks a ton to Ullman Sails for supporting On-The-Water Anarchy and bringing this coverage to you all, and to Joe Fly Sailing Team for the excellent technical support.

Chicks rock. This is "Pearl," the only boat with three giirls on board. Good stuff. My mistake regarding female helms - there apparently is one german girl driving 008, and I'll talk to her later this week.

They shut that start down for a ten degree shift. New course is 290. Kinda confusing why they're restarting after that one.

It's still early - look for the BFD to come out if it has to. Clarke/Kotoun won the right, steaming out here with us on the wing. THe body of the fleet is on the left though - we'll see what happens.

Clarke/Kotoun won the boat, but the entire fleet has peeled off to the left. Joe Fly, Pilot Italia in the middle right, JF just ahead of PI. Important stuff, this.

Interestingly, after six races (tomorrow morning) they will probably have to send the fleet in so they can be split into gold and silver, then back out again to race 7 and 8.

This course, in this breeze, is a huge tactical mess due to the geography of the land that's funneling the wind. The mark is in the shadow of a few 200-foot hills off the beach, beautiful but hazardous to one's racing health...

This is called "caprera" at the corner of Garibaldi Island.

That's for sure - much easier. Still, it's sometimes a lot easier to see what's happening from here, where we can see every boat from a height of eye of 12 feet or so, than from the cockpit of a m-24.

Real start vid nearly done...

Pollard on Excellent is really doing a great job so far - the class of the non-italian boats. He's got Micky Schwartz on the boat, and my blonde South African assistant today tells me that he's also a South African by birth, rigger, german passport, married to an Englishwoman, living in Torquay. Like all the Excellent boys, he knows how to party big time.

Speaking of parties, we had a chance to chat with Jill about the frankly terrible party situation here in Porto Cervo. One top competitor told me yesterday, "when we get off the water, it feels like we're not even at an event."

More on that later.

We're on Course A now, Luigi's course with Black and White fleets competing. Two boats called back, but otherwise the guys are off. Mallnose was one of the boats called OCS. As we race to the top mark, we've got our fleet on our left, and the other fleet on the right, like we're walking down an aisle of Melgi.

Top mark got brutal - Hyde sails caught the mark, lots of screaming seems normal now, wind gusts ripping through the fleet at 25 knots or so. Here's some video.

Alrrighjt ladies and gents - there's one more race today, and while our video from the last top mark and pictures from the whole race load...grab some coffee and sit down to enjoy today's coverage, brought to you by Ullman Sails. For you unregistered folks - you're missing out. You see filenames where everyone else sees pictures. Register now and see what you're missing.

Cheers.

The depth here is nearly 100 meters, and the RC boats have massive chain rodes, with chain and grapnels for the buoys. The round robin system is producing some weird results today - with some fleets having to sail between the two courses for all three races. Definitely some unfairness in the system with one fleet having to bash 3 miles to windward just in time for their next race...

It seems only one course is covered at a time. FT must be on the other course. I see they finished 2nd in the first race today. As of now, no finishes are posted for the 2nd race.

Bow number 115 - Atena, from Slovakia, is getting towed home. Not sure what's up, but it's blowing sphincters out here. Start video is loading, seemed like every Ullman racer was at the pin for this one. Estonians won it, but were OCS and had to go back. We were a good 60 meters from the pin but the RC was screaming at us to get away...not sure what's up with that. Helos overhead now, this is about as pretty as it gets.

Start of Race 5, with me complaining to the RC about being so far from the line. Kind of par for the course for us, I guess. It's actually interesting how a bunch of racing sailors talk smack to each other when they're on press boats just as they would on race boats. The RC, marshals, and all the press sort of lobby each other to get the best pics. The worst I've seen is Key West, but I've never been press at an AC event yet...

No worries Shark - I poked some fun at Geoff in one of the rounding videos, but that was just me screwing with the Laser SB3 guys on this board. HE seems fast, but not near the top of this fleet...I think Miles Quentin, sailing with Carveth, is the North Sails guy from the UK, is that right?

Rough day at the office...

This is my morning routine: Dive boat, come back to apartment and have coffee, start OTW report, go on boat. Sometime in there I change out of my wetsuit and clean the funky death from my ears. In fact, if I don't go home with an ear infection I'll be shocked.
