That is a pretty cool little 16 footer. Amazing what you can do with a little plywood and a little epoxy.

Thanks for posting.

I find micro-cruisers inspirational. Hell, anybody can cruise in a forty footer.

I do as well. I read one of Webb Chiles' books a while back
about his open boat voyaging. While I would not go to that
extreme, I still feel compelled to try something like that.

There is so much great about that guy and his site. starting with him loading a little cat on a chevy station wagon and driving to Mexico! "let's see...how am i going to get my little boat to warm water? Hell, I'll pop her on the Celebrity and drive down". Of course! :P

you know, I just looked through the build log for Miss Cindy. He started that boat May 6th of 2008 and now he is in La Paz! I find that incredible.

He asked the guy he bought the car from if it would make it to Mexico... I bet the guy was probably thinking something like "sure pops, it'll get you there... sure it will...you just give me the cash now.."

His approach to dealing with the authorities in three different countries was amusing to.

I give him the $40, but there is no permit ( I must have misunderstood ).

No.. you can't... This is truly some original and kick ass sailing in a sailing world becoming so damn conformist. A+ for originality. They don't even make grade high enough for building a 16' plywood cruising cat, driving it from Canada to Mexico on top of a Chevy, and then freaking cruising in the thing...

Miss Cindy has different design parameters (fit on a station wagen?), but nevertheless echos the ethos in Thomas Firth Jones's book, Multihull Voyaging, one of my all-time favorite sailing books.

Another one of my books that was lent out and never made it back. I may have to repurchase for the pleasure of reading it yet again.

Holy Fuck! The Captain and the intrepid Miss Cindy are in Florida! The guy started building in april 08 trailered to Baja sailed down to and ACROSS nicaragua then bounced off columbia, cayman brac and cuba to end up in Largo by july 2009. well done , sir, well done.

ETA; ironically, this updated post about Miss Cindy ended up just above the DT thread

Great adventure! Actual cruising!

I thought there were pictures or videos starring Miss Cindy and the CHP - I searched, but could not find. Anyone?

romaine

ps: this thread deserves to always be above any discussion that includes HWSNBN II.

edit pps: Uh, duh, found it on the Miss Cindy page

Absolutely terrific. I just love the whole thing.

We would have most likely laughed him off the BB if he had proposed doing this in a post, but there he is, out there just getting it done.

It puts everything into proper perspective.

Bingo.

OTOH, somebody who does a Miss Cindy doesn't need other people's validation. Inner compass and all. Again, I salute Miss Cindy and her crew.

This thread bump has made my day. Thanks.

Makes you want to check it all in and go. His log is some of the best, relaxed and informative reading I've done in ages.

That poser DT looks very sad with all his extravagant pontificating, compared with this simple and honest achievement of Miss Cindy.

Hey - thanks for the bump on this...time to check in with is journal again. I've been on vacation racing sailboats pretty hard, so I am not feeling like doing real work this week.

What I think is interesting is that as Estar noted, this guy is pretty minimalist in his preparations, but what I also read into his journal is that if he died at sea from his own failure, he would never call for help. His wife would probably miss him, but I don't think he'd burden any rescuers.

He is getting it done! B)

He also seems to be an experienced and competent seaman with some seamiles.
If you look at the boat, the workmanship seems pretty good.
He is the polar opposite of DT.

Yeah...I agree with you KIS

He isn't out there blindingly sailing into storms or foul weather he can't handle. He plans his route, waits for a window..and has an alternate in place if he needs it. However, you wouldn't catch me doing this...I think about strapping basically two Lasers together and sailing halfway around the world, and think NFW! :o

Sometimes I wish my C-30 was bigger in the Chesapeake.

This boat had to transit a river only 10" deep and get hauled overland TWICE, so it couldn't be a whole lot bigger.
I'm with you though - my boat is 35 feet and a rough night in the Gulf Stream made me think NFW would I get a smaller boat.
This guy rules though - for less money than most cruisers spend on a dinghy he went thousands of miles.

Net Nazis here block access to his blog - but, as someone who appreciates "less than conventional trips" - please, someone, pass along my regards and congratulations for him being willing to follow his own mind.
