A couple of little administrative things for y'all:

1) For easier viewing, go to your "my controls" link on the top right corner of the screen, and change your "board settings" for "number of posts per page" to 25 or so. With the size of the photos and videos we show you, a hundred people clicking "refresh" at the same time can sometimes make things a bit slow. It's saturday so it may not be so bad, but it's also December and I know a lot of you will be at your screens.

2) You need to register! Registered members can see all the thumbnails, all the videos, and you can send me or anyone else Private Messages. It makes our report look a lot better, and makes you part of the action.

3) Help us out! The reason these reports are so fun are because of you! If you're hanging around, add something to the conversation - weather, local knowledge, something about one of the teams or sailors, something about the 20 junior sailors that will be out there today...be part of it! Best informational post wins something from Point Loma Outfitting!

Our southbound drive on Thursday was pretty mellow - plenty of construction but not too much traffic. Fortunately, we got to see some nice sights.

Official Release:

Jim Swartz Takes The Lead At The Melges 32 Gold Cup

6 December 2008

Jim Swartz (Edgartown, N.Y.) on USA-007 Q, along side of tactician Gavin Brady and crew of Ben Beer, Jamie Gale, Tim Klein, Erik Doyle and Sarah Callahan played a great game of tack and jibe at the 2008 Melges 32 Gold Cup Regatta hosted by the Lauderdale Yacht Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to take the lead with 14 points. His scoreline places him in the top spot on countback of John Kilroy's (San Francisco, Calif.) USA-13131 Samba Pa Ti with America's Cup sailor Terry Hutchinson calling tactics and crew of Eric Arndt, Eric Dorman, Justin Smart, Alan Nakanishi, Morgan Trubovich and Shana Phelan, also with 14 points. In third overall is Carlo Alberini (Pesaro, Italy) on ITA-186 Calvi Network with one of Italy's finest tacticians Gabriele Benussi. Three great races were delivered.

Race one got underway on time with beautiful blue skies, light air conditions out of the east at 5-10 mph, warm temperatures, manageable seas and glorious Florida sunshine. This race was key for Swartz as it was his best result of the day. With a really nice jump off the starting line, he rounded the windward mark in first. Taking charge of second place was long-time class veteran Edward Tillinghast on USA-151 Dark n'Stormy. In third was another group of extraordinary sailors Marty Kullman and Mike Carroll (Clearwater, Fla.) on USA-131 New Wave. Once out front, Swartz stayed out front and gradually extended his lead to take the win. Kip Meadows (Rocky Mount, N.C.) on USA-77 Roxanne had a fantastic race taking second followed by Kullman/Carroll in third.

The second race of the day produced an aggressive start resulting in some great advances for several teams and set backs for others. Stephen Pugh (Sausalito, Calif.) on USA-158 Taboo and Savino Formentini (Italy) on MON-1999 Bitipi were among those called over early. Alberini, Jeff Ecklund (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) on USA-32 STAR and Kilroy in contrast had great starts. Storming the windward mark was Alberini, beating Ecklund to the punch, followed by Tillinghast. Downwind Alberini pulled ahead by a considerable margin, Ecklund desperately trying to catch up held on to second as they passed through the leeward gate. Back upwind the breeze remained light and shifty. Ecklund put into high gear taking the lead. Alberini fumbled the set making way for Kilroy to jump into second position. For the finish, reigning National Champion Eckund with Harry Melges on tactics appeared to be much happier with their second race performance with the win. Kilroy held on to second. Alberini settled for third.

For the final race of the day a course bearing of due east and breeze increasing ever so slightly, the first start resulted in a general recall. The second start was clean with Ecklund punching off the line as did Kullman/Carroll and Kilroy. At the top mark Kullman eventually got the best of Alberini following a heated race to the mark. Kilroy rounding in third. Kullman/Caroll had enough speed that they held on to the lead to take the win. Alberini and Kilroy were left to dual for second position and take the battle to the finish with Alberini ultimately getting the upper hand. It was ditto for fourth and fifth places. Woods and LYC's John Taylor (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) on USA-1315 Ninkasi vied for position at the finish line with Woods taking fourth. Taylor settled for fifth.

Saturday's racing not only will spawn continued great competition and feature the highlights of the regatta Take A Junior Sailing Day! Some of America's best will have the chance of a lifetime to sail with the world's best.

TOP TEN RESULTS
01.) Jim Swartz, Q; 1-6-7 = 14
02.) John Kilroy, Samba Pa Ti; 9-2-3 = 14
03.) Carlo Alberini, CALVI Network; 10-3-2 = 15
04.) Marty Kullman/Mike Carroll, New Wave; 3-13-1 = 17
05.) Jeff Ecklund, STAR; 15-1-10 = 26
06.) Kip Meadows, roXanne; 2-14-11 = 27
07.) Edward Tillinghast, Dark n'Stormy = 4-4-19 = 27
08.) Joe Woods, Red; 16-7-4 = 27
09.) Alex Jackson, Leenabarca; 14-5-9 = 28
10.) John Taylor, Ninkasi = 11-12-5 = 28

Melges 32 – Pick 'Em

Yesterday's racing at the 2008 Melges Gold Cup was a story of ups and downs. The light wannabe Trades varied constantly from 5-9 knots, meaning endless gear-changing and lots of work for tacticians and trimmers.

Jim Schwarz's Q stayed committed to the left all day, and it obviously paid with Q (Gavin Brady, tactician) leading the regatta. Q launched off the pin in each of three races, and even where the pressure was on the right, the shifts up the course equalized things enough for Brady's left calls to pay.

Breathing down Brady's neck is Samba Pa Ti, our pick for the regatta win. Kilroy, with T Hutch calling the shots as usual, is tied with Schwarz, though only Hutch's hawk eyes have made that possible. Let me explain: Calvi was easily in second in the second race today at the final windward mark, but owner Calvo Alberini got too close to the offset mark and brushed it lightly with the kite. The team initially made no move to drop their kite for a penalty turn, yet Hutch (who we've heard has a 400mm zoom lens grafted into his optical nerve) saw the contact from a long way back, and he slammed his hands together and screamed “CONTACT! PROTEST!” at the Italians in his booming voice (we've also heard he has a 1000 watt amplifier implanted in his voice box). Calvi dropped their kite and spun in a lull, getting rolled by Samba in the process. Samba and Q lead Calvi by one point. “There was no way they were going to spin,” Hutch told me. You can watch the whole sequence on camera right here.

The almost totally amateur New Wave holds a strong fourth place spot, with only Scott Nixon with pro status on board, while the only completely Corinthian entry, Argo, is having a rough regatta despite showing plenty of speed to keep up with the top boats at other events this year.

Our live coverage of the event begins at 11:00 EDT, and today's racing presents a nice opportunity for us – with each boat carrying a Lauderdale Yacht Club junior sailor on board. A great program to inspire young sailors, as described in this interview with Class President and regatta organizer Jeff Ecklund.

We're also going to send Mr. Clean into the water today to shoot some of the action at the top mark from underwater. He'll get some great video footage, or he'll be sliced open by a rudder, or maybe eaten by one of the many bull sharks here – either way, good times for all!

Watch our live coverage right here in On-The-Water Anarchy, brought to you by Latis Yachting Solutions, Point Loma Outfitting, and SLAM.

Thanks Clean for bringing us another round of OTW Anarchy. Especially enjoyed the Ecklund and Ullman interviews.

Dave Ullman's comments on programs downsizing in the current economic environment made me wonder what Jim Swartz's plans are for the Moneypenny program...If you get a chance to speak with him, I think it would be interesting to get his take on the state of "big boat" sailing.

Will do, BJ. We are on station! While it looked like more breeze inside, it was just a funneling effect down the ICW. Wind as read by our little Speedmate is 6.2 knots, 185 degrees.

Also, keep the sun at your back when doing the interviews, otherwise the interviewees face is too dark.

Also, maybe try to pan the camera more slowly, please?

Right shift was 190 degrees. WInd is at 9 knots, and they're resetting at 190 degrees, 1.2 miles - a huge distance compared to the 0.8 of the first race.

Let's me get into the water at the windward mark.

You know we used to hear that singing when we sailed the boat and always thought it was coming from the rig. The shrouds have those rubber vortex inhibitors or whatever thay're called. I wonder if the hull transfer that sounds in to the water?
Inquiring minds want to know.

The Melges 20 demo boat sang too --- I thought it was the rig but Andy said that it's the foil. Was really only on one tack. I think it might have something to do with how the kelp cutter sits in the leading edge.

Awesome work Clean - I couldn't believe that underwater mark rounding vid....f**ing awesome!

Sorry to be so late to the action! Hey I'm sending you a nice big SLAM towel, you earned it! I can't believe you could not get any takers on the "informative port" give away. Let's up the ante, we'll give a SLAM Evolution Zipper Fresh shirt (retail US$78.00) to the winner. They need to host these regattas on the weekdays so all of the office slackers can have a chance.

There's a little-known site called SailGroove, one of the principals of which has spammed this forum repeatedly, so I don't have much love for them - but Chris Love is the guy that blogs and films regattas, and he's a good dude trying to learn to do something that we've mastered. General recall! And we got a nice tit shot from our old friend Amy sailing the M20 with Andy.

Cleans & Crew -- awesome job out there ~

Thanks for getting me onto that Melges 20 today to see the race
action - we had a blast!

(and thanks to Digital Vibrations for the heads up about this fun opportunity :))

Andy, President of Melges, was our personal coach all day long -
the Melges 20 is *the perfect* day racer/daysailing boat --
especially to single or double-hand -- between 18-24' I've sailed,
comparing my experience on the Ideal 18, the U20,
and the Martin 242. This boat has a super smart setup,
is super quick, and has an extremely light touch to the helm.
(I can write more about today's sailing on this Melges 20 prototype
boat on a separate thread)

Heyyy...re: the "tit shot" -- clarification: Bikini Top shot!!! :P

.........and, er...long-time friend...... ;) :P

Why does YachtScoring show STAR as being DSQ'd in the 6 th race? What happened? It looked like Star had a great race on the vids...http://yachtscoring.com/event_results_cumulative.cfm?eID=227

Star was thrown out for not giving New Wave room to tack for a starboard tack boat at the top mark of Race 4. Bitipi was on the starboard tack layline, while Star and New Wave were coming in on port. New Wave tacked to leeward of Bitipi, Bitipi altered course and protested New Wave. New Wave protested Star for failing to give them room to tack for the obstruction, Star got tossed.

'That's sailboat racing," said a Star crew.

Thanks Clean for the update.

Great job ALL around too....the videos are really good, and the in-water filming was awesome.

Especially great to watch from up here in COLD Chicago! :(

"but y'know we're all in this rat race together - Love should come over to the dark side (we have cookies right?)"

not so. Love is trying to make a buck. So is the Ed. Ain't so sure about Clean.

Someday Vegas, you will actually say something insightful and I will sit back and say YAHOO!

That will be a great day - I'm looking forward to it myself ...;)

Were those the foils singing?

They were humming; they didn't know the words.

And the most fun video I've ever shot - the ultimate underwater Anarchy.

Listen to me say "Holy Shit" through the regulator.

I know I'm a little late on this, but that was pretty f-ing cool!!

Our entire team wants to thank all of your for reading this report so religiously and thoroughly. We do our best to bring you the flavor and action from these events, and the number of you who commit to sitting and reading through the entire thing - even on a weekend - is just awesome.

We also want to thank you for the thousands of hits to our advertisers' websites and the emails and comments you've sent to us and to them. When you let Tom Carruthers (PLO), John Woodruff (Latis), or Filippo Bovio (SLAM) know that you appreciate their support of OTW Anarchy, it justifies the time, money, and freebies that they spend on these events. If you haven't done it yet, and whether you actually buy something from them or just familiarize yourselves with their products, please spend a few minutes on each of our supporters' websites. We're just getting our Key West production together now, and every hit they get will help them to see OTW Anarchy as the best bang for their advertising dollar there is.

We are going to try some new things at this year's Key West Race Week, and we need happy sponsors to make them happen. Please help us keep OTW Anarchy at the cutting edge of regatta reporting. And thanks.

P.S. Mer is working on her sailor chick shots from the event tonight - including a Sailor Chick of the Week - so check back later.
