Day 3: Sunday, Breezy Sunday

Worse is the fact that we were up until well after 4 AM, having rushed Meredith to the E.R. with severe abdominal pain that had her crying and screaming. She's a tough chick - she puts up with conditions that reduce grown men to tears - but this pain was just too much to handle.
It turned out to be kidney stones of all things, and she's going to be fine - and back shooting her great stuff today. And if things get boring, we can always just eat one of the percocets she got!
Seriously though - Lang Ryder and everyone at the LYC was extremely helpful to us - it's a really good bunch of people down there. Though a very good Anarchist is actually who saved the day - leave it to the SA community to find us an Emergency Room doc willing to see us at 11 PM on a Saturday night.

It's not fluffy PR, it's not sanitized bullshit, and it works far better than anything else that these clowns try to do.
It turns out though, that Joy hates SA. And really, really hates me. She hates us so much that in her official press release yesterday, under the part labeled "media frenzy,"
MEDIA FRENZY
PHOTO GALLERIES, presented by Protector. There is a wealth of photo galleries now online for the 2008 Melges 32 Gold Cup, in particular Sharon Green, Lauderdale Yacht Club photograher John Payne and class photographer Joy Dunigan. Also, Sail22's Ed Furry has delivered the goods as well. A very special thanks to Protector Boats that has made the Gold Cup Photo Galleries possible.
VIDEO. Chris Love with Sailgroove.org has now uploaded plenty of video from today's Gold Cup races.
IM32CA BLOG. On the water reporting was conducted today. Racing highlights, photos and videos are all online. Catch-up on all things Melges 32 at the Official Blog of the International Melges 32 Class Association. Special thanks to onsite Melges 32 Class European Correspondent Justin Chisholm with Offshore Rules. Visit Offshore Rules for Justin's full reports."
So let's get this straight: The Public Relations/Media Officer for the class is lucky enough to have On-The-Water Anarchy - the regatta reporting arm of the most popular sailing website in the world - at the event. It's sponsored by Latis, Point Loma, and SLAM, so it's not like they have to pay for it. That's a hell of a coup, right? Any PR person would be overjoyed at this...especially when the producer and commentator of the report is the guy who's given Melges boats more positive coverage over the past three years than anyone else on the planet, and what really translates into tens of thousands of dollars of free advertising.
The Class President personally invited us, the club Commodore is excited to see us and repeatedly asks what else he can for us do to make our coverage better, and our coverage already has thousands and thousands of hits.
Yet this Class Secretary specifically omits any reference to us. Despite the fact that the VICE PRESIDENT OF THE COMPANY THAT HIRED HER is doing our live commentary with us!
So I blow my top, and call up Burdick, and ask him if all his employees are that incompetent. He calls Joy and tells her to change it, she amends her story slightly with a paragraph at the very bottom of the screen, ON THE WATER ANARCHY. Sailing Anarchy's famous On-The-Water Anarchy provided coverage with guest commentator Andy Burdick, president of Melges Performance Sailboats. Photos, video and more are also available online at sailinganarchy.com
It is obvious that Joy advised Melges for years to stick with Scuttlebutt and avoid advertising with SA. With the writing so obviously on the wall about both the rapidly arriving death of print media, and the irrelevance of Scuttlebutt, Melges finally saw the light and became an advertiser with SA - and they recently re-upped.
Yet Joy is still angry enough at me, and spiteful enough of SA, to jeopardize her client by intentionally pissing us off. Never mind that her live blog is a direct ripoff of what we do. Never mind that she is plugging her own weak photography and seemingly a laundry list of other unknowns (excluding Sharon, another SA advertiser) without even mentioning the names of the people doing the only coverage that anyone is actually reading.
I thought I'd get out of here without a shitfight...

Sit tight, and thanks for tuning in yet again. Tom Carruthers is offering a sweet SLAM jacket I think as a prize for something, so give me a few minutes to figure it out.
If it were not for SA, I would have not even known the regatta was going on.
As pissing-off as it is, I would not let it get to you as the real peple of the world, and as you say someone waaay up the food chain from her is giving you OTW commentary, let the results speak for themselves.
She'll get hers, along with others that ignore the revolution!

If it were not for SA, I would have not even known the regatta was going on.
...understatement of the century! Without SA, I wouldn't have been out on a Melges 20 prototype
during the Melges 32 Gold Cup yesterday (which I found out was happening by Cleans front page report),
thereby wouldn't have reported how great this new little sportboat it is; wouldn't have been coached by
Andy Burdick, President of Melges, all day, etc., etc....
SA isn't just a media outlet, it is so much more: an influential association of sailors...because all of us are
instantaneous spokespeople about the sport, and are consumers of its affiliated boats/gear/destinations...
Mer, hope you're feeling better!!
Thank you so much, Clean Team, for the photos, videos, commentary, interviews, reporting -- underwater and otherwise!
The interviews with *everyone* to capture so many aspects are awesome...the junior sailors interview was priceless ---
*Thank You*

Been to Detroit lately? This place's falling apart! No $$$ ! You need to hook me up with the RC/OA guys in CA!
Look forward to seeing you in KW next month and we'll take care of the drink/shirt when I see you. We didn't have a chance to catchup earlier this year.

Nice to have you back.Ouch! You must be missing a drink or something! You don't see me giving you shit when you pimp YS here, do ya, so you keep giving us the links and people will keep reading them. Christ knows you've got more time and more credibility here than I do. Shit L_Z, I remember before you got so big...you even used to help add to these reports with your wit and knowledge. Guess you're too good for us now (pouts back)
I've always helped and will still do when I can i.e. not too busy to be running the scoring or trying to find a way to pay the bills.
BTW, you know me much better than that shit of "being too big"! In case you missed it somewhere between the lines, as I told THC, I was just giving you shit!
Chill out. And Hope Mer's doing OK.
Cheers and Merry Christmas.

When you compare their inclusive, friendly attitude towards class communication and growth to what came out of the pathetic managers of the Farr 40 and Mumm 30 class (Stagg), you understand why the M32 and M24 class are so healthy, while the others are dead and rotting.

We also want to thank you for the thousands of hits to our advertisers' websites and the emails and comments you've sent to us and to them. When you let Tom Carruthers (PLO), John Woodruff (Latis), or Filippo Bovio (SLAM) know that you appreciate their support of OTW Anarchy, it justifies the time, money, and freebies that they spend on these events. If you haven't done it yet, and whether you actually buy something from them or just familiarize yourselves with their products, please spend a few minutes on each of our supporters' websites. We're just getting our Key West production together now, and every hit they get will help them to see OTW Anarchy as the best bang for their advertising dollar there is.
We are going to try some new things at this year's Key West Race Week, and we need happy sponsors to make them happen. Please help us keep OTW Anarchy at the cutting edge of regatta reporting. And thanks.
P.S. Mer is working on her sailor chick shots from the event tonight - including a Sailor Chick of the Week - so check back later.
