Well, perhaps more than half.

Y'see... in February, Baxter sent a whole bunch of flu vaccines to Eastern Europe. When they were tested, it turns out that the vaccines contained live H5N1 bird flu virus. This would have enabled H5N1 to make the "species jump" which it previously had found to be so hard.

Had these vaccines slipped through the testing unnoticed , then a global flu pandemic would have almost certainly have been started.

Baxter dismisses this incident as a "mistake".

Puzzling thing is the lack of media coverage . Would have thought this was a huge story..

Vaccines such as the flu vaccine are made from virus proteins.

They never contain complete viruses, dead or alive.

No, he just doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. Vaccines, including for instance the nasal flu vaccine, are often made with live, weakened viruses that cannot cause the original illness.

As they said, probably just a mistake. Pretty scary though.

This wasn't vaccine. As I understand it, it was an experimental product containing live, unattenuated H3N2 strain, which was contaminated with live H5N1. It was never intended for administration to humans. Grrr is right that some vaccines, including the nasal flu vaccine contain live, attenuated virus, but this was not such. The regular flu shot contains killed virus.

The lovely thing about the Baxter product is that H3N2 is highly infectious in humans and H5N1, while particularly deadly, is not. Therefore, an infection with both viruses would have resulted in ideal conditions for the exchange of genetic material between the strains, possibly resulting in a hybrid combining H3N2's virulence with H5N1's sick-making ability--very bad.
