After requests to split some info out of the Tybee stuff, I started this one for Thursday through Saturday. Here's the report from last night's front page.

Four Knot Shitbox

While Nacra 20s and F-18 catamarans are about the last thing you think of when you hear the dreaded 4KSB term, when the wind gets light enough, everyone's got a shitbox. That's what happened during today's 100-mile leg of the Tybee 500, and at 11 PM as I write this story, just 6 boats of 24 have landed on the beach. With 3-7 knots on the course, the racing was all about playing the clouds, with runaway winner Mischa Heemskerk doing the best job of it by far. Only his girlfriend Carrie Howe kept close, and despite Mischa's 40 minute delta at the finish, the two F-18s were locked tight until just a couple of hours from the beach. “We separated around one cloud and finally got some distance on them,” Mischa told me. “Then we saw smoke from a ship and it told us there was shift and pressure inshore, and that's what let us create such a big gap to the rest of the teams.”

The volunteers and shore crews will party on the beach until the last cat is home - at this point, it looks like that means 4 AM - and they have to do it all again tomorrow morning on the leg to Daytona.

We're finally getting some good videos up - we actually beat Mischa to the finish for the first time - not a huge accomplishment given the hour - but our new Flip camcorder is working well for interviews, while a brand new HD Sanyo is supposed to show up at the hotel in the morning. Technology to the rescue!

From the official website, posted early, early this morning. Note that our own Tad and Bailey on TVS2 was the last in to the beach after 3 AM. He ain't feeling well!

"...so stick with us here for the downhill side of the mountain these sailors have been ascending… without oxygen. The Cocoa Beach checkpoint continues the tradition of using up a team’s dwindling reserve, testing mettle and straining relationships, and forcing the RC to break out the night-leg equipment. Only one team walked up the beach in daylight, and only one other was able to find their way off the beach without a flashlight as the last of the sunset bled away. We collected up the last of our flock shortly after 0300 Hours – though the spindrift kept us and all of our gear wet all night, we were treated to a pretty spectacular moonrise, so I think we came out ahead on the karmic front.
Does my typing sound tired? It is. We’ll have more for you up the beach later today – for the time being, know that our sailors are safe and appear to be ready to challenge the next leg of this marathon. Watch this space."

Videos loading now of a very frustrating start for the teams, especially Carrie and JC. Just enough surf to knock the boats back, and no breeze to get through it. Trey got the best start with Ryan (see interview yesterday) pushing like a freight train. Carrie just couldn't get through, getting bounced north as everyone else worked their way out.

A little heads up for y'all. We're compressing and loading five good interviews from the start, and four great start videos, including JC and Carrie getting washed down the beach for ten minutes before finally getting through the breakers. Also a pic of this storm we're in now...

Will update you when videos are loaded, and then we are going offline for the rest of the day. If we do not catch up on other work we have to do, we will not be able to cover the rest of the event, so this is going to be our afternoon off - that will let us do the job we need to tomorrow and Saturday.

Note that this is the last day of crappy camera footage - well, of footage from crappy cameras. The same crappy videographer will still be behind the lens, but the new camera is THE SHIZNIT!

The boats with the Spot trackers appear to be jibing up the beach, averaging in the high single digit speeds, and about even with the Haulover Canal in Mosquito Lagoon, putting them ~35-40 miles out.

Team CHUMS/Corpus had a very difficult time getting through the surf this morning. I think we probably went 1/4 mile down the beach with them before they were able to punch through. But they did it, with only a minimum amount of "god-dammits" from Corey. It was a bit hair-raising at times (I guess it was the 2-4 foot waves slamming into us). Sharon and I weren't the best of help for this part of our job (but she will win the prize for hottest Team Manager)as between the two of us we weigh 190 pounds and we were far outweighed by the boat. Luckily some big strong yummy men helped. I love this race.
Someone lost a daggerboard on their way out. We found it in the surf and managed to pass it along to Team C/C to hopefully get to it's rightful owner out there. We reckon they might need that.....
More updates later. Right now, the laundry has to get to the dryer and it's time for a beer.

It is ASTONISHING how close these boats are, still a long way off. We can only make out what is going on through Mer's 200mm lens, then zoom way in on the screen, but they look like they are a boatlength apart. Wind is down to about 2 knots, surf is almost head high. Will be an interesting landing.

Great coverage. The "lingering death" finishes are captivating. There are all sorts of stories about cats being destroyed there, in similar conditions. Years ago there was a black H18 magnum that just got pulverized! The owner spent an hour or so picking pieces out of the surf!

When you wake up. It might be a good day to interview some pushers especially the ones for the teams that punched through the surf early. They are a important part of this race and it might be fun to get the perspectives from the good ones.

I was once DSQed in the Rolex Cup, particularly the Around St John's Race, because I rounded the wrong mark. This missing of the mark shortened my distance around the island by about 200 meters. We finished the race well over an hour ahead on corrected time and even more on elapsed time, however we did not complain. The course is the course and you should sail the same course as the others.

The organizers of the T-500 should consider that they could loss any right to sail in the area.

Ha! This reminds me of one of RTI races a number of years back. Heading west toward Pensacola, we were supposed to stand well out to sea of Hurlburt AFB but the shore breeze was much better so most of the leaders were within a mile of shore. There was some dinky little powerboat with a blue flashing light that looked as if it had been stolen from a K-Mart and a cheesy little bullhorn siren buzzing around yelling at people but there was 40-50 cats and only one of him. I sure wasn't going to alter my proper course for this numb nut.

Right about then, this Minuteman-type rocket blasts off the restricted base and screams out into the gulf right overhead.

Loc: Key Largo, FL & Put-in-Bay, OH... As far as I personally am concerned, I think that not going around any of those required marks should mean disqualification from the race, regardless of whether the reason for shortcutting is ignorance or arrogance.

Until this year, there was only one required mark in the Key Largo Steeplechase, and that was at the Key Largo Sheraton. We always had spotters at the hotel to make sure all the boats rounded it. If a boat skipped it, that boat would be disqualified from the race. And that mark was just required for publicity purposes for one of the race sponsors.

A required mark is a required mark, no matter what the reason. It should not be something that can get off with a time penalty. There is no way to assess a penalty for something like that in advance in the rules, and anything assessed after the fact is going to be arbitrary, and unfair to others in the race.

Disqualification is the only proper verdict, and it should be in the rules. But that's just me, and I am old school, from the years that when you hit a mark, and nobody saw you, you dropped out of that race and requested a DSQ.

I'll leave it to other SAers to give the Noob the traditional welcome.

I'll see what Mischa has to say about the mark. The reason the rules are somewhat open is because the remedies are a moving target arrived at by the grand poobah. That's just the way it is.

Funny little vids loading from our chase along the way. Boats aren't far now, trucking. We saw maybe four boats offshore south of Jax beach with kites, a bunch more close to shore two-sail reaching. Speeds are up, the thermal is in, and the surf is manageable. And as soon as I get these vids up, I'm going down to the tiki bar to get a drink and wait for the boys and girl. Mer told me that I can't survive on one hour of sleep, and I pulled a line from Roadhouse on her: "I'll get all the sleep I need when I'm dead."

Mischa and Carrie aren't tracked, the tracker shows Trey ahead right now. Go the Anarchy Challenge!

Clean- when you were hanging around in Cocoa beach for ages, could you not at least have tried tracking down everyone's "favourite" local resident, and dragged him to the beach to show him what sailing actually is?

If a boat skipped it, that boat would be disqualified from the race. And that mark was just required for publicity purposes for one of the race sponsors.

A required mark is a required mark, no matter what the reason. It should not be something that can get off with a time penalty. There is no way to assess a penalty for something like that in advance in the rules, and anything assessed after the fact is going to be arbitrary, and unfair to others in the race.

Disqualification is the only proper verdict, and it should be in the rules. But that's just me, and I am old school, from the years that when you hit a mark, and nobody saw you, you dropped out of that race and requested a DSQ.

I'll leave it to other SAers to give the Noob the traditional welcome.

I guess I come from a more laid back generation... Isn't sailing a race, especially one as long, drawn out, and involved as this supposed to be about fun and loving sailing? Why DSQ someone for an infraction that was penalized and isn't going to cause some great change in the grand scheme of things? Just my thoughts, you may dump on the n00b if you feel the need... :-)

Oh, you'll have it Sunday night no doubt. Truth is I have read up on the Tybee/Worrell and spoke to a number of participants before coming down here, so I knew what to expect. What I didn't know was just how much more in common the race has with a Baja 1000 or a 5-break-in-5-day surf tour than any kind of sailing I've ever seen. The folks are chill, the racing excellent, and the whole scene is so much more about the people, the friends, fixing broken shit, hanging out with your bros until 2 AM waiting for more bros to land, and getting drunk.

This is a lifestyle like all of sailing, but here it's just more obvious.

With the f18s having been more than competitive here you'd be insane to go N20. Along with this style of racing the F18 also offers large national and international fleets (worlds capped at 160 teams) and the ability to choose your ride and gear from a range of suppliers.

Next tybee will have more f18s than N20s mark my words.

Or the Nacra 20's will get a modern chute and decent main sail from a quality sailmaker.

The F18's should only have an advantage when it's blowing 15 or more.... the problem is the rig is just dated.
both boats weigh about 400 lbs carry crews of 340 to 400 lbs and are 8.5 feet wide. The 20's should have an advantage in the light stuff... but they can't sail the same angles up the coast.
