The next Vic-Maui race starts July 1-7, 2010. Start near Victoria, BC, leave Cape Flattery (Tatoosh) and Maui to port, finish near Lahaina, Maui. 2308 rhumbline miles to the rumline.

The official race website is at www.vicmaui.org. A race announcement and the Notice of Race are posted there. Race entry packages are also available. Regional distance races including the Van Isle 360 and Swiftsure have been designated as Vic-Maui Qualifying Races for crew. The 2010 crew bank is up and running.

One year to go.

We've seen plastic trash out there, but no island ;-)

Well then you must have gone around it, because you can't miss a mass of trash twice the size of texas.

The linked article doesn't mention any garbage islands. What is reported is an ocean gyre that has a higher concentration of garbage than other areas of the ocean. "Despite Charles Moore's description, the eastern garbage patch cannot be characterised as a continuous visible field of densely floating marine debris. The process of disintegration means that the plastic particulate in much of the affected region may be too small to be seen. "

There is garbage in the ocean, especially plastic. We've seen everything from plastic bottles to laundry baskets to an empty TV cabinet. Most Vic-Maui boats pass to the SE of the reported position of the gyre (35-42N, 135-155W). Most boats returning from the race would pass through that area.

If you want to see a floating island, look downstream from Tonga and you'll find floating masses of pumice ejected from underwater volcanoes.

From the link you sited:

Density of neustonic plastics

Despite Charles Moore's description, the eastern garbage patch cannot be characterised as a continuous visible field of densely floating marine debris. The process of disintegration means that the plastic particulate in much of the affected region may be too small to be seen.

Conclusion: We may have sailed through it and not noticed it.

It is great news to hear that Royal Van YC is behind this event to thew very end. For those that do not know, RVYC and Lahaina YC have had a very long standing tradition is holding this event. This event goes back for many years and anyone that has done can tell you how much fun it is - as well as very challenging.

Cirdan-I wish you the best of luck to you in holding the event - I hope there will be lots of boats that participate in this one!

Thank you. We have a great team working on the race.
The yacht club support is very strong and both RVanYC and LYC have guaranteed the next race. Other things to note for 2010:
  • staggered starts, July 1-7
    • slower boats have 2 more days to finish
    • faster boats wait less time in Lahaina

  • mentor program has been formalized; a pool of mentors has been lined up for first time entrants
  • "Vic-Maui Qualifying Race" status for crew qualifications has been agreed with the Van Isle 360 and Swiftsure, with more to come

Good work Cirdan - somebody needed to pick up this program and give it a good shake.

Promotion for the last race was non-existent to abysmal IMHO and combined with the screwy wind conditions last time I thought we may have been done here with this race.

Good luck and I truly hope you can stimulate renewed interest and get some boats to commit early in the program.

Speaking of early entrants, here are three, well ahead of the January 31, 2010 deadline:

Red Sheilla
Sailing for the Waikiki Yacht Club and skippered by Jim Innes, the first entrant for the 2010 Vic-Maui race is Red Sheilla, a Beneteau 49. Jim hails out of Surrey, BC and is the son of Vic-Maui's founder Jim Innes. Filing Red Sheilla's entry papers early, Jim says that "I've sailed on blue water passages between BC, Hawaii and the South Pacific several times. This will be my second Vic-Maui race and I'm very much looking forward to continuing the family tradition in 2010".

Black Watch
Sailing for the Vancouver Rowing Club and skippered by Dan Matthieu, the second entrant for the 2010 Vic-Maui race is Black Watch, a C&C 39. Dan hails from Coquitlam, BC and his team is returning to the Vic-Maui race after competing in the 2006 and 2008 races. Filing Black Watch's entry papers three months ahead of the January 31st entry deadline, Dan says that "This will be our third race to Hawaii and we're definitely looking forward to the whole journey, from the pre-race party in Victoria to the finish in Maui, with the tropical trade winds sailing in between!"

Kinetic
Sailing for the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and skippered by David Sutcliffe, the third entrant for the 2010 Vic-Maui race is Kinetic, a Beneteau First 47.7. David hails from North Vancouver, BC and the Kinetic team is returning to the Vic-Maui race after participating in the 2004 and 2006 races. Following the 2006 Vic-Maui race, Kinetic sailed onward to Australia, competed in the 2006 Sydney Hobart race and then sailed home, a round trip of over 17,000 nautical miles. Filing Kinetic's entry papers early, David comments "This will be our third ocean race to Hawaii and we're in it for the challenge, adventure and teamwork, and the great parties in Lahaina!"

The entry deadline is January 31, 2010. Official website is www.vicmaui.org

Try doing it WITHOUT leaving Tatoosh Island to port. Just sayin'!

Great that they are keeping it alive.

Agreed leaving Tatoosh I to Port is a good idea ... but there's a probably a historical reason why it's in the SI's as a requirement ...

The Graveyard of the Pacific. For reference, the SS Pacific sank near Tatoosh following a collision with the Orpheus in 1878; 250 fatalities. Interesting site here:

IIRC, Turicum snuck through there in the 2000 race. They self reported (good on 'em for that) and took a penalty which knocked them back from a probable 3rd in class to last. I think the skipper was off watch and the crew wasn't aware of the requirement. Or at least that's what was said at the bar.

Let's be honest they sailed the wrong course....

I've looked down at that "passage" from the Cape Flattery bluff and also sailed by it 20+ times. It would be seriously scary at night. And foolish in the daytime as well. Plus it is jam-packed with kelp.

As many know, we are not shy of taking a risk here and there on the race course - or of coming up snake eyes through bad karma - but you wouldn't get me trying my luck through there. Especially on a 2,000 mile race. Turricum did it? Yikes.

It seems a bit odd to have it in the SI's, even amusing, as if the infamous Olympia to Hoquiam canal actually got dug. But you do have to protect people from themselves sometimes.

Any boats from the Seattle area need crew. I am a experienced sailor who would like to sail with a crew in several races before the big event to learn the boat and crew plus show my capabilities.

People need to try and convince some of the boats on the sidelines to step up and committ. Airloom is thinking about it, and I hear JAM is doing Pacific Cup. Snapper, get that French boat registered, or no Branston for you!

Last weekend, the marine first aid course drew 22 attendees, the preparation seminar drew 30 and 46 people stayed for dinner. Safety at Sea is coming up February 27-28 in Seattle.

Race entry deadline is January 31.

Which boats are on the fence? Knowing who's thinking about it might help the others make a decision...
