Long Island Sound’s only high performance dinghy event, the 2009 Heineken High Performance Dinghy Open will be held again at Amercican Yacht Club over the Columbus Day weekend on October 10 & 11, 2009.

Links to NOR and On-line Entry are at:

www.americanycAmericanyc.org

More than 100 boats are expected with participation from the International 505, FD, 470, Foiling Moths, RSK6, Viper, A-Cat, International Canoe, 49er, Contender, and I14 classes, many of which are locally based. A new class taking part this year is the F18 Catamaran.

We're anticipating over 100 boats this year. That, after last year's record-breaking 82 entries ... !!

It's a fabulous opportunity to come out and race, while checking out other high performance classes. It's not often you get to meet up with other classes on the race course like this - look to your left, it's an A-Cat; look to your right, it's a Fireball; look ahead it's a Moth and a Contender, and over there a Viper640 and a 5o5 are crossing tacks.

Nope, nothing quite like it.

I have two FDs chartered for the NY400 regatta in September.
Both will be available for HPDO, and others besides.

I think the Canadian I14 container gets packed and shipped to Sydney for the worlds on the same weekend, so most of the travelling Canadian I14ers won't be available.

Is it looking like many will stay around after the Henry Hudson 400 events?

There's nothing official, nothing set up regarding chartering, but there are ways to get it done.

To start with, post here (in this thread) what you're looking for.
* go to the class website of the boat you're interested in, and look for the local fleet contact - make contact with them
* talk it up among people you know who might know someone...
* FiveO may have some ideas, too, send him a PM

But to start with, post what you're looking for right here. This is where we all tend to gravitate to.

Chartering which? FD's?

A '86 Lindsay FD, USA-1458, original owner Neil Fowler;
Miss NAFTA 1985 wood deck Mader FD, former owner Frank McLaughlin;
also available US-1354 a 1974 Hein, but a special wooden boat insurance premium may make this unaffordable.

I've managed to miss this regatta the past couple years, but am planning to do everything I can to make it down this year with the I-14.

A couple questions for you guys involved with the regatta or those who have attended in the past:

1) It looks like there's a $300K insurance requirement. Does anyone have any leads on places that might be able to provide insurance for the event? Any idea on cost?

2) What's the deal with the requirement to carry a paddle? Any hints on what boats like the 14's have done with that in the past? It's not exactly trivial to carry anything extra on a 14 - there's simply nowhere to put it. I have no idea what you'd even do with a paddle on one anyway! Any thoughts on what others have done in the past would be helpful.

3) I'm assuming things like kite sheets could be used as a tow rope as long as they're reasonably easy to detach from the sail & boat and meet the other requirements (diameter, length, floating)?

Thanks!

Ive used both BoatUS and Gowrie off and on over the years, they both run around $300 for 12 months of coverage.

the adaquate paddles (>1.0M long) and 15M of floating tow rope are in the FD class rules. we manage it, you can too.
Thats so you are less of a hazard to commercial navigation if you are becalmed.

imagine, having to do safety and liability in the same weekend.

If the hit the 100-boat target, the answer is "probably". It hasn't been decided yet as we really have no idea as to volume of participation yet.

I stuffed the paddle under the spin sock and used the spin sheets as the tow rope... Get one of those small collapsable paddles that is only about 1' long and 6'' wide when collapsed.
