DZ float is at 127', M2 at 165'. CZ float at 112', M at 158'.

I agree with your DZ/M2 calcs but get a different number for CZ mast height: 172'
(based on mast height of 583 pixels and CZ hull at 380 pixels: 583/380 * 112' = 171.8')

Do you get 172 from 112, in this original snapshot from the animation?

Anyone know a V5's loa? Could be nice, if it matches up properly.

By the D35, A5 is at 112'.

SUI 100 would be at 84' by the same D35 measure. Is it accurate?

http://i28.tinypic.com/jufx8j.jpg

V5 / SUI 100 : 25m / 80'

In this image, V5 measures 284 pixels and CZ is 380 pixels so: 284/380 * 112' = 83.7' for V5

pretty close!

Extremely close, yes! This thing is accurate :) :) :)

Now abut that mast height.. One of us is wrong, we need to figure it out so the comparison is good in both dimensions.

BTW, just for laughs, I did a full screen grab on my 17" diagonal laptop and CZ measures only 326 pixels - so I calculate that your screen must be 20"? :)

Yes - Looking real good, nice work. The dimensions are accurate, good comparison.

It would be better if you could have a cleaner CZ in it but I think this is the only sail plan graphic we have so far. Maybe we could superimpose a better graphic, or even a real shot, of CZ's hull?

Would also look better if both were on the same background. No idea how to attempt that, all I have is Paint.

Wow - That is freaking beautiful!

Can you make the images any larger, please? Or does the CZ graphic get to looking to rough?

i'm looking for a background that makes sense with bigger boats... the resolution of the video stills is not so good though.

Anyone thinks the sail plan they've put on CZ is a bit odd?
They have been reminding us about the vertical wind gradient, and how when there is no wind at water level they will still see quite a bit at the top of the mast. In this 3D render, they have a huge overlap with the genoa, and a main that is quite small at the top.
The mast appears to be canted quite far aft, that would be why they can't get much more area atop (if we look at the leech on both DZ and CZ on the pic above they have almost the same angle with vertical)

Another point is that I thought M2 on DZ was estimated to be bigger that CZ mast which doesn't appear here (maybe because DZ is heeling in the shot used for comparison).

Anyway enough speculations. Analog your images are beautiful

Wow, really nice stuff there Analog77 :)
Now if you can just stretch the DZ vertically for a 195' mast...

Off topic, but here's a podcast that may be worth listening to (dunno yet).

Podcast: Sailing Talk with Santiago Lange, top multihull and keelboat sailor on the next America's Cup...

MP3 audio (18 minutes): Santiago Lange is about to set off for the Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds in Brazil. The Argentinean knows his stuff, having won two Olympic medals in the Tornado, and raced in the America's Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race. Andy Rice & Justin Chisholm ask Santi about his views on the America's Cup and the big question on everyone's mind - which is better: two hulls or three? Listen to find out...

Clearly that's photoshopped (or GIMPed) you can see the shadow of the little beach cat doesn't align with the shadows of DZ and CZ

Not picky over here, ~impressed~!

Downloaded GIMP, it sure looks a lot better than when I last saw it, sweet. I contributed to ImageMagic code fixes back-when, those libs got rolled into GIMP, the lines are probably still in it :)

How did you do the Select, freehand?

Sorry if I appeared picky I was just trolling. I am impressed with your work. It looks very good and makes me want to see these two giant sailing together. Also makes me want to have more time on my hands to be able to play with GIMP too. Or even just more time on my hands to just have a life.

Piece of advice for the youngs: Think twice (or more) before embarking on a PhD...

go here to turn the music on

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=tIdpIw_3a3o

then back to this page for the sing along

We all came out to Villeneuve
On the lake Léman shoreline
To make multis out carbon
We didn't have much time
Larry Ellison and Russel
Had built the biggest beast around
As some stupid with a lawyer
Had burned the cup to the ground

Hulls on the water, no sails in the sky
Hulls on the water, no sails in the sky

They burned down the challenger series
It died with an awful sound
Funky Bruno was running in and out
Pulling teams out the ground
When it all was over
We had to build another boat
But swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race

Hulls on the water, no sails in the sky
Hulls on the water, no sails in the sky

We ended up at Valencia
It was empty cold and bare
But with light winds rolling off the med.
Made our racing there
With a few protest flags and a few old tricks
We made a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know we'll never forget

Hulls on the water, no sails in the sky

Hulls on the water, no sails in the sky

additional alternations acceptable

i wanted to edit the album cover to say "Deep Shit Alinghi5" but i'm on the wrong computer

Attached File(s)

The parking lot picture - just prior to being airflifted - gives a very accurate measure of mast height.

Measure the size of one parking space and multiply !!!

(after it was airlifted, but..)

What is it, right about 25 spots? It's a bit hard to tell, not knowing the height above ground and there is some parallax, and also some diagonal.

But even assuming 25, we don't know the width of them; they could even be sized for dinghies not cars. want to take a stab at it, TK?

The animation had it at about 172, I'm thinking it is all of that.
