The organizers of CYC's "Race to Mackinac" have been on the ball for some years now, and they've stepped it up again this year with a fully subscribed 350 entries from the turbo'd 'Frankenstein' Melges 30 "Peerless" through the 70' turbo'd 'Frankenstein' Bill Lee designed "Merlin". The race also includes a doublehanded division for the first time, and in coordination with BYC's Pure Michigan Bayview Mackinac Race we'll see the first Super Mac in years during the 2009 event.

Some 31 boats will blow right through the finish line of the Chicago race (and be scored), and continue another 200+ NM to Port Huron, MI to complete the Super Mac - the world's longest crewed freshwater race. The entries to the Super Mac, unsurprisingly, include a huge pile of Anarchists and numerous Mack race winners, from our team on Nice Pair to Fetzer and the boys on Peerless, Bora and Phil and dad on the N/M 46 Natalie J (remember our bet from the Nice Pair/Natalie J battle in the '07 Mac?), Hollywood on the Melges 32 Saturn; Burnsy's Heatwave, and many more.

The technology is finally catching up with what we've been trying to do for so long, and with the help of an excellent long range GPRS antenna, we will be posting pics, videos, and text updates from our 490 NM trip up and down the Great Lakes on the quick racing catamaran Nice Pair in the Super Mac. We'll start our coverage tomorrow evening with interviews and pics from the pre-race chaos at the CYC, and should be in range to upload multimedia updates for most of the race, excluding possibly the first day or so if we are stuck in the middle of Lake Michigan. This will be the first time live video is posted from this race, and we'll do our best to keep it fun and exciting. You can track the entire fleet here for the Chi-Mac, and the Super Mac continuation tracker is here.

We won't be there for the last part of the summer distance classics; the Pure Michigan Bayview Mackinac Race, but Anarchist 'cariguy' and his team have done a stellar job of stemming the atrocious Michigan economy to somehow have increased the number of entries from last year; a real victory for Frank and BYC. They've achieved this goal by being smart, and doing what we've been screaming about for years now: Focusing on inclusivity, working their asses off to get a great title sponsor, and embracing SA, Twitter, Facebook, and Constant Contact and the rest of the online tools to help build a community. Check out more about the BYC Mac right here.

Finally, we've got two great sponsors to help us get you your updates, as well as to help us win this race. First is our old friend THC from Point Loma Outfitting, who's helped us get the equipment we need to do our job as well as our favorite technical team gear of all for summer distance races, especially since Mer is a Patagonia snob. The attached pic is our Patagonia Capilene 1 Crew neck (long sleeve). Patagonia's Capilene is made from recycled polyester and features "Gladiodor" natural odor control. These are also recyclable through Patagonia's Common Threads Recycling Program. Cap 1 is a 3.7 oz. fabric with 15 UPF sun protection and is ideal for high-exertion, hot weather pursuits.

Our second sponsor is Mark Michaelson's stellar WxRouting service, who will be giving us our pre-race routing suggestions and weather reports. Mark is damned good at this stuff, his forecasts helped us beat Scott Nixon and Chris Larson to win the Saturday of last weekend's Sail Newport regatta in Melges 24s. We are growing to rely on WxRouting's great work, and if you want to use it, we suggest you book it well in advance - Mark works his ass off and already has most of the summer blocked off.

We know there will be a LOT of people watching this thread; in fact, these forums set a record for number of people logged in back in 2007 when we were sending in live reports from the Chicago Mack, so all of you - please use your resources to add anything of interest to this report; weather, your own updates from iPhones and Blackberries up the course, stuff your friends call in to you, and anything you find on other sites. This should be a great one-stop shop for the 2009 Chicago Mac and Super Mac race.

Thanks for tuning in!

I don't miss the stinky island much, but the Chicago party rocks, and I just couldn't miss the chance to race 500 miles with my wife and a fun crew in a hot boat all without having salt on everything. And to be able to send in videos to you guys from the course when its never been done before is just awesome. Assuming our new gear works!

Thanks for your support, and for the awesome gear. FWIW, I sure do seem to see Patagonia on more and more teams lately; even in Italy. Mer has good taste...

SO:

Also doing the SuperMac is the infamous Dehler IOR 33' Heatwave, doublehanded with the beautiful ZiggyAndRolo and less beautiful Burnsy aboard (doublehanded division). If you're new to this scene, get educated here about legend of the 'wave.

And Anarchist REW, racing his modified F-31R Trimaran Cheekee Monkee, who is also on the organizing staff that does such a good job.

Morning Updates? Latest Forecast? Premiere Racing usually releases the daily forecast by 8:00 am.

When a race is scheduled to start at 10 or 11 AM then we will post the latest forecast about 45 minutes in advance of the start depending on when the last model runs become available.

Today's racing starts around 2:00PM so issuing an 8:00AM forecast would be like putting fresh Sushi down on a picnic table in the Summertime at 8AM when the guests wouldn't be served til 2:00PM. The experience for the guests would be less than appetizing.

For our premium customers, the last update goes to their mobile devices between 3 and 5 minutes prior to their specific warning signal time giving them the latest updates to the forecast, current GRIB's, current surface and upper air charts and observations and a radar summary.

For general purpose today though and since you asked:

Wind will start out of 310 this morning and skies will be mostly cloudy to cloudy. High temp for the day will be approximately 68'F. Increasing cloud layer leads to a chance of showers in the late afternoon through this evening. Winds clock to 355 and lighten...

More later.

Slow:

We provide a detailed forecast just minutes before the start and if buoy racing between each race. This allows clients to get real time data trends, convective activity reports, and any updates to the model runs in pretty much real time. We can also spot subtle shifts in direction and time the oscillations depending on the venue.

Our ability to observe and interpret radar data can also better provide time/distance calculations for wind shifts in frontal passages or lines of thunderstorms.

The most important things to 90% of our clients though is giving them information that allows them to book vacations at the right time of year for a given location. Then while on vacation we can send them real time information if they are in the way of bad weather out on the golf course or water etc.

The client list has grown rapidly since we launched the concept back in February strictly through word of mouth and the occassional post here on the forums. Many thanks to those of you who have selected WxRouting.com .

We're dockside, looking at around 350 degrees at 10 knots or so. Still nice and sunny but certainly cooler than I'd like. Plenty of puffy culmulus directly overhead and to the NW, but clear over the lake.

Chicago-Mac Race

101st edition. July 18, 2009

Report #1. 12:40PM local time

Weather Synopsis:

Chilly temps and blustery winds raked the lake all night last night . Highs will be limited to the 60ís today with partly to mostly cloudy skies being the rule. Upper level flow is from 330-355 degrees. The Jet stream continues to sag to the south of the forecast district. This put the brakes on the low just east of Lake Huron but it is still scheduled to migrate ENE through tonight.

Some convective shower activity is possible today in the damp air mass as the sun heats the land in the afternoon and through the early evening.
Observation stations throughout the lake were measuring winds from 4.1 to 19 knots. Mostly NNE through WNW. Winds have veered since 11AM local time at most stations and increased. The maximum winds today should occur between now and 3PM local time. Some areas particularly on the west short of the lake may experience higher winds, especially in gusts in any thunderstorms that develop in concert with solar heating during the day.
Reporting stations at noon reported the following:

I apologize for the formatting. It would be great if there were a way to post an excel spreadsheet on the forums!

The latest visible satellite run indicates that there will be limited daytime heating of the landmass due to cloud cover. So, no thermal gradient to speak of except in Chicago and the sun will be mostly limited to areas on the lake for today.

Light showers are beginning to develop to the NW of the racers just North of Sheboygon. A line of very light showers appears to be developing to the WNW of the Chicago area as well. Nothing all too very exciting but worth noting. Winds across the course are now squarely 320-ish and 8-14 knots. The conditions in the immediate starting area are an anomaly to the general trend across the lake.

More later.

Looking at the tracker it seems like the lead boats have gotten the shift and are tacked over, but everyone else, including us, is on starboard. It's an endless procession of boats to windward, and we are moving decently at least, passing many of them in our own little lane about a half mile to leeward.

There was more pressure up the course early. You should see the shift once you have sailed 5-10 miles up the course (or less).

So the wire run from the batteries to the inverter 12 V plug was too long to maintain voltage to power the laptop and GPRS Antenna, so I hard wired it to the battery compartment. Of course I was careless and arced a wire, blowing the fuse in the inverter, and had to use the coke can trick as a fix for the rest of the race.

The Natalie J crew does their thing well, and here I get challenged to a boat for boat bet on who is first to Port Huron. Not looking too good for us right now! Light air and upwind ain't gonna work.

Turbo Class Starts:

We are more or less becalmed, working the shit out of the boat to get the wind stuck to the sails. Speeds are 0.4, then 2, then 3, then 0.4, etc. Passed a J/133 type looking thing, and a maroon boat with sail number 18643 IIRC, only a couple of boats anywhere seem to have any breeze, and they are underneath a rain cloud to our NNE. Glassy, glassy, and annoying, and the flies are out.

Just passed FT10 # 34, he's got his kite up and we are on screecher. His kite is hanging like laundry.

Our Class Start:

Meade and Jan Gougeon roll the fleet in the funny looking little Gougeon 32. This thing is about 8 feet wide, two hulls, float at the top of the mast. Meade apparently flipped it in a race and had it upright in 10 minutes. They fill the leeward hull with water, then drop the rig off the side, and use it to flip the boat back up. Cool as shit. I think the boys will be back on Adagio for the PH-Mac.

The wind contiunes to veer but there just isn't a lot of pressure anywhere. Natalie J is making 7.0 knots while Nice pair, some distance behind is struggling in the mid six range. Conditions improve a bit for those west of 86.65 today and the push could come from behind the fleet leveling this off a bit.

The only real pressure on the lake today will be late today on the western shore and it isn't worth the extra miles to get to it. At this time the only station over 10 knots is Cat Head/Grand Traverse Light. It blew there all night in the mid to high teens.

More in a bit after I get more coffeeeeeee....

Today appears to be a little more interesting, looks like the bunch I'm following are going for the thermals on the Michigan side. Since Clean didn't particularly care for our Coupon Code yesterday ("Fudge") todays code to get 20% off at Point Loma Outfitting is "Pink Pony". Is that a little bit more to your liking Clean?

Let's hope the breeze solidifies the rest of the way!

Short tacking the shoreline right now, Vincitore just crossed us as we took the ugly tack out to try to clear point sable. We can see the GL70s up ahead, and if we could just point higher than 55 to the true wind, we'd catch the bastards. No such luck though. Best breeze we can see is on the beach, so that's where we'll stay if possible. Wind 5-6, bs 6-7, code zero and full main. Have plenty of signal on the laptop, but this primitive ass place has no 3G, just slow stuff. When I went to upload my first night video update a few minutes ago it said "13 days, 11 hours remaining". Gotta find some better speeds up the course. Check www.twitter.com/OTWAnarchy for some pic uploads I'll throw up in a minute from the crackberry. Beautiful, cold as eskimo balls day!

This is pretty hilarious! As boats bob around a mile offshore, we continue to ghost along 150-200 feet off the beach, reading off depths to whirly, pulling the boards up when they graze the sandy botom, answering kids playing in the sand as they say "ahoy" and "hey racers see you in mackinac!". Fun times.

Kite up!!! The tiniest of zephyrs led us to throw the secret weapon up; jim frisinger's ancient melges kite. This gave us enough speed to start moving again in a SWly flow, half a mile from the beach. We went to "the gash," Bruce's new North kite with a black background and pink gash down the middle. Reeling in boats ar 3.5-4 knots. Go to twitter.com/otwanarchy for picss...

Go the gash.
