The big blue sled had a great weekend...

On the first day had a superb start and smoked off the line, ran deeper than Braveheart and then wider. Were a little slow to shift to a kite on the backside after nearly getting rolled by the Car. Caught up to Braveheart by Turn Point and then had an epic tacking duel to the finish, squeezing ahead of them to take the gun. With the squall coming from behind there was no chance of correcting on the boats behind.

On the second day we had a very poor start - miscalled a wind shift and ended up being the windward boat and had to gybe back. We then went outside for the breeze which turned out to be a big mistake - headed back to the beach where the action was had a great time working the rocks with all the other boats. By approximately Lilm Kiln had worked through most of the boats except Flash (who had a great day) and Braveheart. Flash & us reached out to Salmon Bank to avoid the bank - both of us lost time to the boats who went on the inside, broke loose from Flash by Salmon Bank and started reeling Braveheart in. We were on their heels at Davidson. They set their kite immediately and seemed to be having control issues as they had to reach up around Kellett Ledge. We went to a blast reacher and then set the kite once we rounded Kellet Ledge. Then the fun started - our backstay blew immediately. Thankfully the rig stayed up due to some clever driving & kite trimming. We then went into full damage control - setting a temporary backstay, running masthead halyards back, etc. The end result was a stable rig but we couldn't gybe - put up the A5 and then limped to the finish at 14 knots. Easily lost 15 minutes on this disaster!

Great race and the rig survived for another day!

Thanks for the update. It was great to hold you guys off until Salmon Bank. The winch monkeys were hoping for a little more wind so we could lose the H1. Grinding that in was taking its toll on us.
Hard to argue with a weekend like that. Glad to hear the rig survived.

Did you see Braveheart set a new course record? Good on ya! It was Brian 5 years ago at Gran Prix who gave me this handle "Big Guy With Pink Hat".

Good times! Thanks to RTC organizers for pulling off a fabulous weekend of racing and socializing.

The band Gertrude’s Hearse was rockin’ on Friday. Great sailing, more sunshine than we expected, good wind both days. Our crew worked hard with endless tacks on Sunday to make gains and pass a number of boats. We had a nice reach to the finish on Sunday. Being down to one halyard prevented us from hoisting a spinnaker but it was still a fast, fun finish!

Thanks to our skipper for everything. It was a pleasure to sail with you guys. Great teamwork and a good attitude all around.
It was great to meet alymatt and share some laughs with Team C d M, and to reconnect with lots of folks.

Congrats to the team on Martha, for the overall win in such a gorgeous boat. She looked stunning in the sunshine on Sunday.

Thanks for great photos Kite & Jan.

The course record still stands, although Braveheart almost broke it! Perhaps next year we can make the Friday night event in Anacortes an "official" part of the event...

Congratulations to Martha - they had to sail a completely different race from everyone else, but still did well...

What a weekend! Huge thanks to whoever arranged to have the rain machine quit shortly after the start on Saturday. Nice touch. Good breeze, good times in Roche Harbor, and who wouldn't love the washing machine at the exit to Cattle Pass, eh?!?!

That race should be mandatory! What a hoot. Thanks very much OIYC for putting that on.

  That was funny... "it was the f'kin big guy in the f'kin pink hat" as the veins in his neck looked like they would burst. Wasn't it he who started screaming first, yelling and effing at the boat you were on at the start, because he had no rights, and got caught with his pants down??

Anyhoo, the the handle is a good one.

Cool to see Duke lumbering around the course, and doing ok to boot! Gives me some hope for my big old Catalina. Couple years and I will have to line up against those guys for a RTC.

Martha at the finish line. It was amazing how effieciently they handled that boat. They were "shifting gears" with the rest of us.
Nice job to the crew of Martha. A well deserved win!!

Front page materieal for sure!!

Big thanks to RTC organizers. This in one of the greatest events.

Thanks to my crew for a great weekend. You guys are awesome.

We had a great boat, warm meals, geat laughs, homemade beer, wine and mead, and boat handleing that made it possiable to hold the chute from Kellett Ledge to the finish Sunday with no problems and to bang off three gybes on Saturday morning's joy ride. All the headsail peels were smooth and quick and at the right time. You guys rock.

The competition was great as usual. Congrats to the trophy winners although I feel we all win just by doing this race.
Cruising with a purpose!

See you all up there again next year.

So Martha won! Nice.

I think they might have set a record for most miles sailed also.

RTC interested parties,

What a ride, what an event, and what great competitors! After starting on time on Sat and Sun with some adverse conditions a wide variety of wx and sea conditions, I think everyone saw everyone else at least twice on the courses.

Super organization between Friday Harbor and Orcas really made the regatta a premier event. So many stories have emerged that made it what it was and if that was'nt enough for those who could not make it to dinner on Sunday, well you (Paul) missed the china plates and the glass ware! (Thankyou Patty)

Results were posted from the data collection sites due to the efforts of our commodore and recording teams were on the mark!

Great effort by Shockwave and Mai Tai with the WOB recovery, it was totally professional by all accounts!

Most of all, had first class crew Wally, Gary, David, and my son Jake on board, they did great!

Cannot wait until next year, in the meantime back to the shop!

Does anyone know if that registration is a OIYC site specific program, or is it available to any PHRF-NW club to use? Sure would be nice to have though out the NW?

The Anacortes Yacht Club is using www.regonline with great success. It is fully integrated with the club website (www.anacortesyachtclub.com) and can process complex registrations, take payments and is fully secure. You can also upload PHRF & insurance certificates, plus order t-shirts & dinner tickets, etc.... The club also uses this system for their annual ball - works great and costs a couple of dollars per registration. As far as electronically referencing the PHRF database, this could be easily be setup by PHRF-Northwest or some enterprising member.

However - the difficulty with any on-line system is that some people still want to mail in their completed entry forms - ideally it would be completely on-line making the event much easier to manage.
Nice job on your race entry set up. Looks great. I especially liked the photo by Nancy Laeha that is on the cover of your 2009 Race Pack. That shot from the 2007 RTC was a good choice.

Great post KS. Corvo crew can't stop talking about this one, either. After racing around here for over 30 years, I cannot ever remember even sailing with a 90' schooner, let alone racing with one. Crossing tacks with them was a very rare and worthwihle experience. Great Great Job Martha, and thanks for the memories, CONGRADULATIONS!

I have only done 3 RTC's now, and mabye 25 Swiftsures, but RTC is by far a greater adventure. Many thanks to all at OIYC.

KS says it right on...."I feel we all win just by doing this race". Very Very well put "+1"

Flash was seeing 18 to 20. Just enough to keep the H1 in play.
