Holmes Hole Sailing Assoc.??

AHA!!

Noticed another smaller HR just a few moorings away from Anthelia in Vineyard Haven next to the ferry dock. I think it had black cove and boot stripes unlike the normal factory blue.

The backstay must have been cranked way down; the pre-bend was sick looking. Probably the rig was modified or set up for racing, as it looked unlilke any other HR mast I ever remember seeing. I think the spreaders were swept back. Possibly not stock parts, but maybe so; as I haven't seen many newer HR's.

Christian, do you know the boat I am describing?

edit.....noticed a couple of Morris nearby too.

Those Morris 36s are gorgeous, motivation to make a shitload of money. The one I race on when I'm there is owned by the ex-CEO of Bristol Meyers Squibb ($$$$). His house is on the harbor and he walks down his lawn to his dinghy on the beach to row out to his boat. Tough life eh?

Holmes Hole Sailing Association: http://holmeshole.org/
Weekend warriors with classic boats and shitty sails. Yet I've never seen people who just love to sail as much as they do. Some of them are 5th-6th generation island sailors. Black Dog or Bruce T Shark, if you're lurking, do you know about this?

They may be motivation to some to waste their money. The Morris 36 may look pretty. It's the most outrageously overpriced day sailor I've ever seen. Buy a Saber, save the money and take her out on the blue water happily.

Did a Hallberg Rassey early this month from Vineyard Haven to Essex, CT. Blowing 20-25+ out of the northeast. Slipped the mooring at 6 AM, tied up 13 hours later. Sailed with fair tide at 8.5 to 9.25 for 9 hours, had to motorsail when the tide turned off New London and the wind dropped off.

What was her name? I might have raced on the boat (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

You didn't race on a HR - HR's don't race. In ideal conditions you can have a fast cheese and crackers cruise - but race - NO (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

warning!! Professionals driving on closed course, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME... ;-)

Just kidding, in case you didn't recognize the antique winking emoticon.

BJ... Hallberg Rassey are well built and awesome racer/cruisers!!!

Just Ducky... Dunno how much a Morris cost, but real pretty, but much less fun than a Melges 32 in ELIS in less than 10 knots of breeze; typical Duck Island Roads summer breeze...

Sabres used to be very well built; but I've heard that they are not so good now?

The M36 I raced on was "supposedly" worth Half a Mill. There are ones with full teak decking and wooden cabin house that go for more obviously.

Also Pretty =/= Fast but I'd still give my eyeteeth for one of these babies

I wouldn't go so far as to say "racer"/cruiser - they are pure cruisers. But they're not wallowing pigs either; German Frers put a little git up and go in the hull form even though they carry a lot of furniture. H-R sponsors a couple of H-R only regattas in Europe every year.

Saw a new Morris 36 @ a boat show when they first came out a number of years back. The guy who designed her was onboard with a hottie to show off the new boat. It real was eye-catchingly pretty. And so was the boat. She was billed as a daysailor. Her price was ticketed at 998,000 USD or thereabouts. Just under a cool mil for a boat not meant to be stayed on overnight nor taken outta the harbor by much. Unbelievable. Maybe they've changed. I haven't. I'll still take on older well built boat like a Sabre or a thousand others before I'd ever consider an ostentatious pragmatically purposeless waste of money other than to impress other people watching me on my boat. For the money you'd spend on that daysailor, you could buy a fleet of one designs or a wide range of multiple fun ways to spend time riding the wind over the water. Yeah, the countertops looked expensive, and the shitter was very nice, however give me an older better built blue water boat any day of the week, leaving me with a cruising kitty to keep me happy and enough left over to buy rounds for all in bars over a very wide range of nautical miles.

i think it's the morris 42 daysailer that's $1M, not the 36, which i think is less..., but still expensive.

the 36 is better looking than the 42 - i think that's why they are building the new 52ft daysailer - because when they put the stuff they wanted down below in the 42, it started looking a bit bloated, and not as sweet as the 36. i guess 52ft lets you have the room below, and still looks good....

anyway, they're good people at morris, and what else would you like to see their clients spend the money on? at least this way it gets into the local pockets.

You're probably right about people at Morris, sizes and price. And I have nothing against the Morris people. Still what I said is valid, and the money spent on boats always goes into someone's local pocket, somewhere.

Lets put it this way, if you gave me the choice between an all expenses paid J/109 or Morris 36 I would choose the latter.

Couldn't you then sell the Morris and buy 3-4 J/109's then anyway?
