Just got home. 2.00 am

Great 3 days!
Two races on the last day.
Everyone had their moments of glory!
In the last race the newcomer Viper that had been climbing the learning curve during the regatta, nailed the right on the final beat and won the race. Well done guys and welcome to the class.

Was it 5 races or 6? They all blurred together after 8 hours on the water. A beautiful day with great conditions and phenomenally tight racing in the Viper class. Brutally competitive as always! 10 boat fleet, and in one race, we finished with 3 boats overlapped and one barely not part of that overlapped pack. This after a shifty, long (1.5 mile?), 2-lap WL. We had good starts and phenomenal upwind speed in at least 4 races today, we'd make one mistake and lose 3 places. Great fun!

Fuck if I know. I think I forgot to drink water and was completed dehidrated by the end of the day. All I know is everytime I looked up I had a Rattler on my ass or in my face!!! Pretty ugly thought. Good racing.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

Sorry for the late report, too much of a good time and your immune system will remind you of it (I am flu ridden). This was more or less taken from my blog, cheers:

Well, it's another Lake Norman regatta in the books! This time I raced in the Viper and enjoyed spending time and getting to know the fleet, as well as consuming copious amounts of "nonspicey" rum and goombay smashes. Sailing aboard USA 109, we ended up second to the Jackpot boys, who put on a excellent display of consistency and crew work. Nice job guys! It was also great to see everyone out there who made it down to the lake for one more sail before winter. Kay on 98 was incredibly fast downwind and we couldn't seem to shake him off in several races.

Friday
Well Friday started at 3am for me, getting up in absolute darkness was a bit difficult, but I figured there would be plenty of time to sleep on the plane. After a layover in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport, I was delayed on the runway for 30 minutes. Worrying about whether or not I would make out to the start line in time kinda sucked, but it worked out. It was pretty cool, I got picked up by a friendly fellow Viper sailor who took me to his place, jumped on his powerboat and arrived to the docks in time to jump on the boat with Guggs to the start line... well the wind completely shut off and we ended up on shore postponement. It would have been interesting sailing with just two people, but Guggs says he has done it plenty of times. A trip to McDonalds and store for ice and we hung out around the docks for some drinks. Dinner was at the usual Mexican restaurant (which I will probably never eat anything but quesdillas again btw), but my crew never made it. They had a class officers meeting and drove to the wrong Mexican restaurant afterward. We ended up catching up with them later and turning in for the night.

Saturday
It looked so dismal, but turned out to be a nice day with an incredible five races fired off. All two lappers except the last race, which was just one. Race one we sailed a very smart race and was able to catch the few boats in front of us on the first downwind leg by keeping in the pressure. We then had the luxury of covering the upwind leg and just plain outright extending on the final downwind and upwind leg. The next three races were tough for us, the lake was extremely shifty, but these shifts were quick and oscillating. In the end it seemed that either shore sides would usually work out fine and you would need to just be extremely patient in taking the headers in order to come out okay. Rattler put on a most impressive "capsize recovery" display when a puff hit them upwind. Sailing windward of us they proceeded to turn over, keel in the air, and we sailed on, thinking they were out for a bit. About five boatlengths later, we look over and not only had they recovered, they had actually somehow gained on us and were back in the race! For those races we struggled a lot, definitely not with the crew work, but mostly with worrying to much with what other boats were doing and not focusing enough on the course relative to our boat. Brian drove all but the last race in which our boat figured it was best to have him on tactics while Guggs focused completely on driving. We ended up winning the last race, which was similar to the first race.

Saturday night the club put on a BBQ dinner and there was plenty of Goombay Smashes provided by the always fun Ultimate 20 fleet. The club was newly renovated since the spring Lake Norman regatta and we thoroughly enjoyed the second floor's large roaring fireplace. After one too many, it was time to turn in for the drive home. It definitely gets ridiculously cold after the sun goes down, which sets pretty early because of Daylight Savings.

Sunday
Sunday started out with being in a world of hurt at the Waffle House. I was only able to drink an inch of water. The hangover came quick and left quickly though and I was pretty much fine as we sailed out, except being completely hungry. The first race was pretty light and a complete focus, but we were able to nail a beautiful start because of Guggs and rounded the top mark in first. It was just a matter of staying in the pressure and covering the fleet. The second and last race of the regatta turned out to be an absolute crapshoot, but still pretty fun. It tells you something when the last place boat got first and the two top boats got last and second to last. Really it was not a race, because the lake turned glass and you literally had to "roll gybe" your way to the finish while going UPwind. While our crew was getting burned (including myself), I found new creative "spots" on the Viper. The "down below" on the boat, which is really where the kite sits under the foredeck, is a nice cozy spot which was 10 degrees cooler than outside. I also sat on the bow where the kite sits for the last hundred feet of the race, which gives you an idea of how light and ridiculous the scenario was.

Trophies were given and Lake Norman Yacht Club and the local Ultimate 20 fleet were able to deliver another wonderful regatta. A great weekend sailing with fun people and soaking in some warm Carolina sun. It was exactly what I wanted and needed after three straight weekends of cold and rain, clear skies and warm temperatures!
