Have my pal Smithy, the current Mirror World Champ (and an ex Fireball one too) coming over for a bit of canal sailing tomorrow night. Told him not to worry about sailing kit, plenty of sweaters here.

Here's some pictures of him winning the 2009 worlds with Smithy Jnr (Tom), he's 10 years old !

Will try to get some more "extreme canal sailing" pictures.

You'll need to start recording times from your house to the pub on a board (a la Top Gear).

You will have a supreme advantage if he brings his own boat. The lack of a gaff may be detrimental under those trees!

So pleased to see a Mirror gaining space on SA

With a name like Scotty and a Foxton location that can only mean one person!

As I remember right this isn't your first bout of canal sailing as you used to do it on the Laser.

And I note there is no mention of the Fireball worlds as yet....

Posters have been asking about properties in the area and you haven't tried to sell them one yet??? You must be slipping in your old age!

Next time I am down at the parents I'll pop into the shop to compare Mirror notes.

Answers to the above:

Quite right !

True (ten years ago).

Ok, I won them with Nelly a few years back.

True also.

That would be good. Give me a clue as to who you are !?

Correctamundo Scotty

Good to see you are still sailing, pushing the envelope and drinking heavily!!

How about strapping a petrol hedge trimmer on the gaff for those over hanging branches??

Will maybe hook up for a beer next time I'm down although I doubt I would get one of my Mirrors in the suitcase or as hand luggage!!!

As mentioned, Smithy the current world champ sailed the vessel to the pub last night. He made the best of terrible conditions, sailed brilliantly and wasn't at all scared of the dark.

Terrible night, foggy, cold and as flat as a plate of piss. Visibility awful, moored barges looming up out of the fog... highly dangerous, extreme canal sailing and what's more, nobody wore a buoyancy aid. Hardcore stuff.

The good news is that we got through a couple of bottles of Grolsch on the way and had plenty of ciggys on board. Sue crewed on the return trip and wore a nice Russian hat (very sensible on a cold night).

Pictures below, a bit boring I'm afraid (still trying to get some high wind shots).

Lighting up is easy if you know how.

The best piece of kit is a Zippo, never fails, likes the breeze and doesn't mind the wet.

Next best is a newish disposable lighter, just make sure the flint stays dry.

Matches = complete waste of time.

Have always found that if there is a possibility of not being able to light the next ciggy, then just light it off the old one.

Hope this helps.

Sorry yowie, no can do.

Just looked at your profile and it says that you are only 8 years old.

It would be irresponsible to go extreme canal sailing with an eight year old. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Sounds like you should get you old Fireball helm out. He’s always good for a disaster after a couple of shandies, especially if a small boat is involved.

Might just do that.

He'll have to promise to behave though, wouldn't be much fun getting the Mirror out of a tree and taking it home in bin bags.

OK, I squibbed a decade or ten.
Sheesh, who looks at those things?
And we have proved that, unlike Mr Grebe, for whom everything was possible, you aren't tempted to take little boys sailing at night.
Now back to the tickets, and its my shout, should we ever arrive.

I would recommend fitting your extreme craft with a gnav (yes you can get them from a supplier in the NE of England) to give your good lady a more comfortable ride up front. The extra space could then be used for a 12v fridge (battery under the mast) for the grolsh or one of those stainless steel fire pits to light the tabs on and warm your hands on now that its getting colder. You would need to be careful in the roll tacks otherwise it could all end in tears and firewood!

Hmmm, and that promise will be worth as much as the one he made not to approach a crowded first windward mark on port; again…
