26 October - Day 1

The live feed will start at 1030 EST on http://www.sailinganarchy.com/otwa/
If you go there now you'll see the recordings of the opening ceremony, which were pretty damned cool, but you won't see the amazing dinner they threw for the racers. I don't care how much the EYC loses on this regatta, it will be worth it!
Pics and lots of interviews and all sorts of other goodies coming soon. Lots of contest giveaways and great discounts from our sponsors coming too, so don't stray far from your computer this week.
Please go and check out our sponsors banners above if you have a free second; lots of them already have specials on the links above, and if you want to see them return to support more great events and our continued evolution in covering them, spend a few bucks with 'em and tell 'em why.
Thanks again to all of you tuning in and helping OTWA to grow from a few dudes texting updates to a forum thread to live streaming coverage of the creme de la creme of small boat events.

So why am I getting a bunch of taped stuff at 11:30 EST on the Justin TV site?? Am I doing something wrong?
Me too, maybe my work network hoses it up for me :-(
Here's some racing updates on the IMCA site:

I think then live video is pretty cool; but... let's not forget the SA thread as well. I'm sure I am not alone wanting to see the order at the mark roundings, and finish order. Let's not forget the vehicle that made you the, well made you what ever you are.

Got to see some good racing with Mer while she took some pictures. I'll be back in the live broadcast for the next race, so stay tuned for my input on what is going on out here, not that I have a freaking clue!! RC is dropping the marks and getting prepped for the next race. It's not too windy but the sun is out.
You missed a hilarious conversation between Mer and I about the difference between right and left. I think we should just stick to port/starboard.
Stay tuned, guys!!

Alright now, since I am definitely feeling like the event is 3000 miles away, can anybody give any input as to weather and tidal conditions expected?
From Fiona:
"RC will be setting a four leg course for Race 2.
Breeze is around 6 – 7 knots but getting unstable in terms of direction".
Likely to be a further delay before the course can be set."

Race 2 underway with a couple of boats 42, 17 called OCS at the pin.
Both returned correctly.
Big left shift at the start caught out a lot of boats who ended up low of the line on starboard.
Current still running against the fleet so bulk of fleet have headed out to the left hand side to try to cheat the tide…
Breeze is no more than six knots…

looks like at the boat end they got a right hand shift and a left hand shift at the other end of the line. 2 different breezes for sure. many boats could not cross the pin end due to the shift but on the boat end they were huge lifted.

so far yes, they have had 2 roundings and fleet is way inverted. some of the best in the back.

It's another left payday on this second upwind leg.
Live in 5 minutes or less.
Italian team Gullisara rounded bottom mark first with a right gate right turn, with 2 other boats close behind. The rest of the fleet worked their way thru the SMALL gate minutes later. Fleet is pretty inverted , Hutch is still towards the back, along with the rest of the major players.

Grinder, we run live at the start, mark roundings, and the finish. We can't run live broadcasting while speeding from one end of the course to the other, so we run videos while we do that. Tomorrow, we will be running Mer's pictures and interviews instead of the opening ceremony.
Sorry to not update the forum so quickly, we will fix that. Should have brought more computers on the water today.

I probably missed a few, and I'm sorry for that. It was a very odd race, the fleet was very spread out in a way I never expected to see. However, it is the Chesapeake Bay and you never know what is going to happen here. Good job to all the racers who stuck it out and tried to make as much sense of the wind as they could.

I think you believe me when I say I am disappointed with todays coverage, and have let the PRODUCERS aware of that disappointment. Personally I think they are too hung up on the live coverage, and using that as their primary vehicle, leaving large amounts of time uncovered and a vacuum for information.
Like you I use this thread as my primary source of info, and will watch the video later. besides todays' video coverage of the first race pretty much sucked, the time it was least spotty we got an interview of Clean's brother!
I had no idea what the wind was doing, nor the current (afterall it is Annapolis), who took what side, etc.
Let's hope tomorrow is a better day for the OTW gang!

I think the youtube posts and Mer's photos of the action during races would be helpful for us who can't follow the live feed. Tactial input would also be great, still wondering how some of the top boats got hammered in the 2nd race.

Please do not take offense to this, but I would like to keep everyone dialed into the SA , its a sponsorship thing. I have heard from above that tmorrow will be vastly different in coverage.
Its funny, not really, but I ave a pile of cool shit to offer, but the way today's coverage went there was no where to really reach that many people at the same time. Until then,

But please have a little faith. If we hadn't continually pushed the envelope, we'd still be banging a couple of videos up here and there. We have to keep trying, to keep pushing the technology ahead, or we might as well walk away from our vision of bringing live sailing to as many people as possible.
We'll do a lot better at keeping you all posted tomorrow, and we have an absolute ton of video to show you, interviews as well as Petey's highlight reel, which should be ready before too long. Just sit tight, and thanks for all your patience.

I just want to thank the butt heads that were driving some of the press boats at that second start for f-ing it up for everyone down there. what a shit show that turned into and unfortunately the video doesn't give the complete story.
Did race committee say anything about press boats once on shore?

The big error of the day, in my opinion, wasn't the start. It was the gate of that race where the marks were about 3.5 boatlengths from each other. This let to a huge mess at the bottom marks, including some banging between Kristen Lane and another boat and a huge mess down there..

I think what people are missing is the play-by-play from the early days - before there was an OTWA. I remember being addicted to Wash's KWRW comments between meetings and it was a lot of fun. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that 90% of the people who want to watch this don't care about the live element. Great videos to catch up at the end of the day are where it's at for the office crowd. In the meantime though getting the old-school mark rounding reports with who went where and who shit the bed is the kind of thing we can read at work in a few minutes without anyone thinking we're watching live TV.
Live is where you guys have been trying to go, but I don't think there's the demand for it that you think there is. Coverage in the form or videos that document the racing and and text-only updates are where the focus should be and what the technology can handle.
Keep at it.

Thanks for that, but remember that the live thing is something we've been asked for over the past three years about a million times, and even today's live feed saw over a thousand unique viewers over the course of the day. I do realize we've been alienating those of you that can't close your door and just watch it all. So we are going to do a better job of it, especially tomorrow with a big boat to do it from, and Katie already started working at it today. When Mer actually has somewhere to put her computer where she won't puke, she can get her pics up quickly, and when I have the room to spread out, I can do a much better job of posting. But we're not going to give up on the live stuff, because it has been an unabashed success in terms of numbers and feedback. Text updates just don't do it for many people, and they certainly don't get nonsailors excited like Petey's video above, which my step dad saw a few minutes ago and went crazy for.Clean -
