The Geelong Race week will have a Super 30 division this coming year (2010) where sports yachts from 28 to 33 feet will be able to race under a common handicap rule. Yachts such as Thompsons, Melges 32's, Farr 30's, Flying Tigers, Hick designs, and any other pocket rockets that can enter should start making plans to get involved.

Geelong is the perfect place to get the Super 30 concept up and running. The Australian Sports Boat Association has shown interest in helping with a national body to help with class measuring and building a fleet.

Please use this thread to help spread the word and lets get comment from the owners who are committed to building a class.

The Sydney Super 30's are adopting the AMS rule as managed by Yachting Victoria as a basis for handicapping and we need comment from owners on this subject as well.

Lets stop sailing in the "non performance handicap" and get a single handicap system in place so we can race right around the country.

cheers

Geelong had Super 30's a few years ago but ran it under IRC. It was a sort of miss-match. Some 30 footers entered Super 30 while others entered IRC division 2 etc - depended upon whether you wanted to race similar size boats or have a chance of beating bigger boats on handicap. AMS doesn't make a huge difference here as it's Victoria where AMS is strong. So in that case the rating system is not the major issue. What needs to be done is to motivate the 30 footers to want to race together at Geelong - Sydney seems to have done well in that regard, conformance by consensus - or for the organisers to say that 30 footish boats with AMS ratings within a certain band can only race Super 30, ie conformance by compulsion.

Geelong needs to get its act together on this. We got 4th in super 30 in 2006 in the Mumm (Farr) 30 among the Bull 9000's etc, but while the S30 division was won by an F30 (Kato), another sailed in IRC2 as did some of the Hicks etc. All these boats should be together I reckon.

While I do like the certain headswell that you get from beating big boats in a little one, there is nothing like one design, and bringing like boats against like - size and performance - is a great start towards that. Works in sportsboats, working in Syndey Super 30's, let's hope Geelong.

Might be there next year if the boat doesn't sell - yes it's still in Melbourne for sale. BUT - chance of another F30 coming to Hobart and pressure from buyer to bring mine back. Make offers now! I know, buy an ad ....

If they (RGYC) run it under IRC again they'll get fuck all interest and entries like before. If they run it under AMS however, then you should see a good competitive fleet. There are plenty of competitive boats here (in Melb) that fit the criteria and it could make for a fantastic series if they get involved in goodnumbers. That would make the prospect of Sydney boats travelling down here to join in worthwhile.

Mothers of Geelong, lock up yer daughters. Mothers of Corio, its past your bedtime!

Melges 32 Flyblown will support a super 30 class at Geelong. Would be great to race against the other 30 footers along the lines of the sports boats.

Geelong organisers are very open to any help they can get to make sure the Super 30 division gets up and going.

AMS as the rating system has been discussed with the race management and is the preferred option of the Northern boats. I have been advised by several of the Melbourne boats at discussions during past regatta's that AMS is more widely used in mixed fleet especially at this size.

It is important to get a discussion on this point and use this forum to get organised.

The Geelong Week regatta organisers have put forward at last nights meeting that the Super 30 division should be raced under AMS.

I will post the result of this meeting as soon as I have confirmation, but the organisers realize that most eligable yachts would be measured under this system.

Please be aware that the following classes have been or are being measured for AMS with a view to a one design rating for that class.

Farr 30, Melges 32, Flying Tiger.

Please see the AMS measurement thread for details and contact information regarding these classes. Any input from owners is appreciated.
