Wow. Depending on what broke, that could end the program. I hope to God no one was hurt.

That is a very sloppy way to describe whatever news you have.

What did you hear about it exactly?

Standard rule - pics or it didn't happen

What is your source for this, what exactly do you suggest happened, where (dockside, out on the water under sail, while towing in / out??)

edit - Ok, Stingray's post of the blog link shows that this was not a wild goose chase.

BMW blog states that BOR90 was dismasted... no injuries (thank god)...

That is very unfortunate, hope they are all okay.
I didn't like that new raised mast ball though.

Gee, if only they had another rig they could... I don't know, pull out of a tent or something... just so they can continue training?

Well there is a plot twist for you.

Good to hear nobody got hurt and hope this does not put too big a dent in the boat being ready when needed.

Source of the failure will surely determine the status of the 'Whomper'.

Can you imagine trying to sort the mess that that must be out, on the water.

Glad all are OK.

Fuck that was a nice main though.

Lots of possibilities, some of the very bad... broken main beam, broken rear beam, broken ama, broken mast step. broken mast. I hope it was something more benign like a running backstay coming loose from the mast.

C'mon... This is all part of a carefully planned, and perfectly executed plan. It facilitates their installation of the wing, and makes the competition think they are weak when they are not. This is what the bail pedal next to Jimmy's foot was for.

NOT!

But we have heard that kind of thinking around here in the past.

What absolute Twaddle you speak sir, if the boat is still structurally sound and it was a rigging failing, they'll just wheel another one out of the shed and continue as normal (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

A dismasting normally does damage only to mast and sails. Sounds like a good excuse to introduce the wing, pronto! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Glad no one is hurt as that is the most important part.

The BOR build team is awesome at mod'ing DZ so it will be an interesting step to see how they bounce back from this situation & make it a learning experience.

Better to happen in testing than racing & it's going to be another interesting chapter to follow in the life of DZ growing up (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Dropping a rig is not necessarily catastrophic, if it was a shroud it probably fell quite gently.
The problem with this AC is just that everything has to be made nationally and that means you sometimes have to compromise on materials.

I am showing that Pt. Loma is blowing at 21mph West. Any locals give color on what it might be doing offshore?

Got a PM, "either the mast itself or a stay failed. no one hurt."

No suggestion yet on how bad that is.

I wouldn't bring out the wing till we hear on the appeal. Once we know that we're going to see a race in Valencia on Feb 8 it would be safe to bring out a wing. Don't give their engineers anything to look at till then.

As long as the boat structure is good, should not be too big of a hurdle. Even so, the boat should be reviewed and we'll know more when the report comes in.

I take it that was M3 on board?
