Oh sure... his BMWO team loses a mast and Franck just goes off sailing...pfft! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Should be fun to watch. Good on Stan Honey for getting another wack at the record. And with Thomas Coville on board you have a prodigous amount of talent in that boat.

Damn what a skilled group. But why do they need a World Champion Match Racer (Bruno Jeanjean) for ???? Is BP5 on standby too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ?

Not yet on stand-by from their website.

If Cammas' routing his good, he may stand a chance to go on the WR holders list, for a time or longer, whatever BPV does, not a bad move to start early.

PS: with Caraes from Orange attempts, Le Peutrec, Ravussin etc... it certainly is a star studded crew.

PPS: 50 days from Nov. 5th is way before February 8th (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

• Franck Cammas, Watch leader - helmsman, skipper
• Fred Le Peutrec, Watch leader - helmsman, operational head of Groupama 3
• Stève Ravussin, Watch leader - helmsman
• Lionel Lemonchois, Helmsman
• Thomas Coville, Helmsman
• Loic Le Mignon, Helmsman
• Ronan Le Goff, Bowman (No.1)
• Bruno Jeanjean, Bowman (No.1)
• Jacques Caraës, Bowman (No.1)
• Stan Honey, Navigator

What are the typical crew roles on such a boat/navigation? Why is everyone either helmsman or bowman?
Are the bowmen also trimmers? Are there many sail changes during a record attempt?
How are the watches typically organized during a RTW?

Doing the math, it looks like it is three watches of three. Maybe three hour watches? Stan is on no set schedule but floats through every watch.

I am guessing that one person drives, and the other two trim main and head sail. If sail changes are required I bet that it is a two-watch exercise. But the apparent wind goes so far forward on these boats that this is a genoa-to-code-sail-to-genoa sail change scenario.

Hmm, I think sail changes is a 3 watch affair... And watches overlap eachother, so you have standby crew. At least that was last time if my memory still is trustworthy.

IIRC, from reading about these beasts, they don't really trim. They set the sails and the helm steers to the trim. But you have a hand on the sheets for emergency big dumps.

Heard Cammas on radio this morning , 48 days (IIRW) would make it for his birthday, he said that was a good dream to have.

It looks like Coville isn't taking a third crack at the solo record this year, then.

I think you've got the watches wrong.

I see:

Floating
• Franck Cammas, Watch leader - helmsman, skipper
• Stan Honey, Navigator

Watch one.
• Fred Le Peutrec, Watch leader - helmsman, operational head of Groupama 3
• Stève Ravussin, Watch leader - helmsman
• Lionel Lemonchois, Helmsman
• Loic Le Mignon, Helmsman
• Ronan Le Goff, Bowman (No.1)
• Bruno Jeanjean, Bowman (No.1)
• Jacques Caraës, Bowman (No.1)

Watch two.
• Thomas Coville, Helmsman

Bidégorry said that from the start BP V was planning to go on standby around the 15th of November and that he intends to stick to this plan.
