Where to stay, what to do in Newport, RI?

We are taking a family trip to The East Coast for the first time. We are going to spend several days in NYC, but will take a side trip to visit friends in Connecticut and one day/night in or around Newport In mid April. Any suggestions for a good place to stay and what not to miss for a family of four very interested in sailing? Kids are 10 and 7.
