If my mother gets transferred to rehab today, then a daytrip down is definitely feasible. Otherwise? Maybe not so much. All part of the dutiful-son thing...

I grew up in DC and spent a lot of time in NY, and both had (and have) neighborhoods that scared the bejeezus outta me. And they're the good parts of the east coast. Philly B-more and all the cities in that NJ place are way worse.

Toronto was admittedly a snore it was so safe.

But the typical American needs to think about whom the pot's calling black. I wonder what the foreign tourists say to each other on web forums about visiting the States?

agreed. I was in Atlantic City 2 summers ago for a conference and two old German ladies/tourists were robbed and stabbed to death. I would never go to AC for a vacation. All places have their elements. ALL! Just had a $400 dollar dinner on Sunday night in DC, walked one block to car to witness a 3 person fight...I kept on walking.

just because the water is clean and sands are white does not mean some poor guy does not want your money or nice things.

AC's been even more of a hellhole since the casino era, not that it was a nice place before. Tourists are generally advised not to stray more than a block from the casinos on foot. Most of the cities in NJ are pretty similar. As for Philly, speaking as a native it's a weird patchwork of safe areas and unsafe areas. Most of the city isn't a good place to be for nonlocals on foot after dark though. One of the "Philly casinos" is right next to a state pen in a small neighboring city called Chester. Unless you're going to the casino,a harness race or a soccer game, don't ever get off I-95 through there. Imagine Mogadishu on a bad day crossed with a Bosch painting of Hell and you have Chester. I used to work EMS there...
