Strava - for sailing?

19 February 2013 - 09:10 AM

Addicted to Strava (www.strava.com) for my cycling training. For those who don't know it, basically it is a GPS that tracks your ride. Users can create "segments" from point A to B so you can compare your time from previous rides, plus compare against your friends and others. So it becomes quite competitive and is a good training tool as you don't need everyone riding at the same time.

But for sailing, could it work? There are more dynamics as we don't go straight from A to B along a fixed path like a bike each time, but it could work from Set Mark/Permanent Mark/Landmark A to B. So for a bridge to bridge in San Francisco, or Round the Isle of Wight, rather than having records only when races are set, you could race at any time and show your GPS track for all to see on an independent site. Could have handicap system based on IRC/PHRF or whatever is your local disputed method, and for classes allows for bragging rights too. Local clubs could set periods for particular landmark races over a year or month basis which gets people out there sailing (but set wind limits for eligible entries that can be verified by local weather bureau).

So thoughts?
