Annapolis Area Maryland Elections

01 November 2010 - 03:15 PM

How would you feel if you had to walk into court and the first thing the judge said to you was "Well, this is my first time doing this, we'll all learn together, won't this be fun!" ???

The state of Maryland requires newly appointed judges to run for election, for their jobs. They have already been through a vetting process that requires the sign-off of the county BAR Association - a Non-partisan body - before a short-list goes to the Governor for appointment. The BAR of Anne Arundel has over 1000 members from a full range of poitical views, and the Governor may only chose his favorite from the list given to him. The election rules, on the other hand, alow ANY lawyer who is a member of the BAR to run against the sitting judges. Even if that person has NEVER stepped foot in a courtroom before.

That is exactly what has happened in Anne Arundel this year. An attorney who has NEVER been in a trial is running against the highly experienced judges who are sitting the bench presently. She is running on a highly-partisan platform, and is relying on the demographic makeup of the county to get elected.

If she becomes a judge, she WILL make mistakes. She does NOT know trial rules or procedures. She would allow evidence that should not be in court (or the reverse). She would allow arguments or testimony which should not be in court - Hearsay has a very specific definition that she has never needed to know before. The time it would take for her 'on-the-job-training' would cost both taxpayers and businesses money. Her trials would be longer - with higher legal fees for individuals and businesses. Her decisions would get overturned - and taxpayers will pay that bill.

If you know ANYONE in Annapolis or Anne Arundel County, please at least tell them to inform themselves about this race. For the average person, a decision of a Governor's may mean slightly higher taxes, but if someone EVER needs to go to court a BAD JUDGE can ruin their life!
