  8. And how many small mammals, reptiles and ground-dwelling birds *don't* currently exist in the USA because of cats? Mikey doesn't know. He can't know except possibly from inferential data in the fossil record. But - we do know what's happening. We know how some small marsupial populations recover when feral cats are excluded from their territory. We also know how expensive it is to do this. It's impossible to do even for a small fraction of the Australian landmass which is an even better reason for intensive suppression of feral animals on islands. NB: Tasmania is an island. I help su

  11. Yeah, I get that. I still think Nixon was more complex than Trump. No doubt he was a crook and a schemer and an egotistical bastard but he had some depth to him. Of course, things tend to look better in retrospect. Listened to this and found it evocative: http://www.slate.com/articles/podcasts/slow_burn/2018/01/the_final_episode_of_slate_s_watergate_podcast.html https://megaphone.link/SLT7840590654

  12. In fact there should be beaucoup good used sails from various European countries for the H Boat, as they're a super popular One Design in Germany, Denmark, Austria, Norway, Finland and so on. On my short list of dream boats is the grown-up cousin to the H-Boat the H-323. I've never seen one for sale on this side of the Atlantic, though.

  13. I believe Nick, who works for Fulcrum Speedworks, has successfully foiled through a tack, or come very close to it. However, I have not seen video evidence. UFOs have eluded close video scrutiny for decades, why should this generation be different :-) In any case, Martin is correct, a foiling tack is going to be very difficult to pull off. Foiling gybes, for that matter, are difficult as well for most mortals. I have seen a video of Dave completing one, and I watched Nick complete one in person. However, I have yet to see a graceful, banked, foiling gybe on a UFO, something that the t

  20. Yet again you are wrong Mikey. I live opposite a highly regarded reserve very close to downtown Albany. Cats are not welcome in the reserve, neither are unrestrained dogs. Would someone shoot an unrestrained dog or free-roaming cat in that reserve? Most likely no, however if i came across one and knew who the owner of said cat or dog was then I'd have a few harsh words with said owner.

  26. One of my fav's "The terrible thing about the sea is that it is not alive. All our pathetic adjectives are false. The sea is not cruel or angry or kind. The sea is insensate, a blind fragment of the universe, and kills us not in rage, but with indifference, as casual byproducts of its own unknowable harmony. Rage would be easier to understand and to accept." Webb Chiles

  27. for lake norman - get yourself a $4000 used lightning and tow the thing to the southern circuit once you get good at it. thousands of them around, plenty of sailmakers with tuning guides, it only weighs 700 lbs and can probably get on a plane and stick with the boat you are drooling over. AND you will have a minimum of 40 grand in your pocket compared to the cheapest boat you mentioned. OR if they want to be able to sleep on it, get a corsair 242, leave it on the trailer with the mast up and drop it in the water and sail away. If you put a big square top main on it you will stick w

  29. Apropos of nothing, and because it is winter for many of us, and because H-Boats came from Finland, and because we are cold and wet and waiting for spring so that we can sail and frolic in the sun, and because we want joy and happiness with our families, I thought I would mention that Mrs. Bull and I are cooking a Choucroute Garnie this weekend, an Alsace dish of love, a winter medley of sauerkraut, potatoes, sausages, ribs, and ham, with mustard and rye bread on the side. We are going to try the Jaques Pepin version: https://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/choucroute-garnie I encourage

  32. Very beautiful boat but I'm not keen on the contours of that deck house. I would have made the fore and aft camber of the profile go the other way to avoid that sagging look. Look at the old,S&S and Rhodes short houses. Just an aesthetic judgement, no right and wrong. Nice tight bow wave.

I contacted Bob Perry the designer and asked him if he was willing to sell me the plans to build it in Brazil, from wood using the method of cold mold, the Gougeon Brothers’s “West System” to be specific. Perry, is a guy who likes challenges (agreed to make changes that ultimately ac

  36. Not necessarily... Used to be, back in the day, families would actually go off on a week long cruise on their smaller racer/cruisers. Being able to sleep mom, dad and my 3 kids sure has made my boats (30-35 footers) more useable, and hence, sailed more often. Used to be, you went off to a race week, or an weekend regatta and slept on your boat. Did multiple Block Island Race Weeks in the late 70's/early 80s where many of the folks racing were also sleeping aboard. Used to be even smaller boats did overnight ocean races. Hence the MORC boats. Many a Ranger 26, etc were raced

  40. Well it's been a total blast learning to sail this little beauty, not the most brilliant summer for wind this season here in Blighty, seems to be all or nothing, but eventually I managed to get to grips with it and even had a couple of results towards the seasons end. Some pictures for those that asked, the boats gone back for a refit, couple of holes in the hull and the deck, and I'm going for a full carbon deck rather than the wrap it had this season, also contemplating a kite. I get screwed by Lasers if I'm not on the wire unless it's a complete drifter and or there are tactical get out of

  45. I remember seeing AMATI for sale, and having a little dream (well out of my price range). gorgeous boat! I thought, "I wonder it the bulkhead that makes the forward end of the cockpit could be cut out to make quarter berths" Then I realized, I'd missed the point. AMATI it great the way she is. She is about a great sailing boat, not about making use out of berthing length. Something we just don't see enough of these days. FD

  46. I always get a chuckle when I read this and one of the selling points is "1800 sq. feet inter.". As if it was a house. But that's the mentality, It is a house, it just happens to float and has sails, so you can do things with your house, like sail it off to some far flung island.
