  1. Nope. Even for me that's getting carried away. Besides, the welded steel keel is actually really cool, with the lead poured in relatively low and the top of steel case is the fuel tank. For 1970, that's pretty darn slick.

"So NOT remaining in the customs union, but no border controls between Ireland and Northern Ireland. Not a clue. And that is something for the poor old EU to sort out. It's almost like … brexual harassment, but seriously now. Yes, you see, in one go they are turning THEIR problems into ours." "I believe that instead in another fifteen years a new generation of Brits will re-enter the EU."

  6. OK, here's a favorite, loosely based on and adapted from a dish I loved in Liguria in the late 70s. Linguini all' aglio, olio, gamberi e limone Cook linguini in the normal way with a bit more salt than usual. While the water's coming to the boil, rinse 7 to 10 large thawed prawns per person, and drain. I like them tail-on, but picky eaters might like the tail off. After the pasta's been going 3 minutes or so, heat ¼ cup good olive oil in a large skillet (or two skillets if you're feeding more than three people) and when hot, drop three or four crushed garlic cloves in each s

  13. I planted 3 zucchini plants in Spring, now nearing the end of Summer and they have yielded over 40kgs and still going strong. We have eaten them fried, stuffed, baked, steamed, you name it. They also do make a great (healthy) substitute for spaghetti but the highlight over the Xmas school holidays was making a Zucchini cake with my 7 year old daughter.

  19. These are extraordinary times. What is also extraordinary is that most British voters (and one also suspects many MPs) simply do not understand what the terms of the Backstop are. They are anti- backstop because someone has told them to be anti-backstop. It is complete fiction that the Backstop can keep the UK in the EU . Under the withdrawal agreement, Britain leaves the EU on the day the WA commences. The first version of the Backstop (perhaps better to call it the Northern Ireland Clause) specified that NI and Eire shall be a "Common Tariff Area". This reflected the wishes of bot

People who love love love Steve Jobs of blessed memory, people who live in the Bay Area, probably many other elite groups appear to think all the cool kids have iPhones and Android is for the plebes, gardeners, etc. So if SailGP just wants Apple users that is their right. But imho it is a butt stupid choice. I note that Louis Vuitton has an Android app

  21. Target total reduction is around 1000 lbs lighter than original weight when launched in 1970. May actually beat that, if counting the mast change (-200+). Total reduction in the transom area overall including rudder, skeg, shaft, housing, excess doubling/stringers, rigging hardware changes, etc. will be around 300 lbs There are many other changes that are low-hanging fruit...for instance reducing the # of winches from 14 to 6. The list goes on...

  24. First off, I love the phrase “bazaar scam”, it makes total sense in this usage. Secondly, don’t interpret my soliloquy on safety at codes and the benefits of society from having as many folks complete EMT training as taking any stand on hair cutting. The trades have always sought to monetize the standards necessary to join their ranks, from the age of guilds. Although the initial impulse behind creating standards are in the public good, eventually it becomes rent seeking.

In the pond are fish that need to be caught and eaten and others that I'd be pissed if someone caught because they're pets. During a drought years ago, we rescued some bass from a neighbor's pond, which was drying out, and put them in mine, which is spring fed. One didn't make it. I had a big, dead bass on my hands, so it went onto that night's menu. We were having dinner with the aforesaid neighbors. My neighbor Dave is the gentlest hippie you can imagine and loves a

  27. Strange story and I’d love to know what was going on the owner’s mind. But sometimes it’s hard enough to know what’s going on in my own mind so ...you know. An aside. In the thread were several links to local newspaper websites, but all of them were blocked for me. I live in U.K. and they have messages saying not available in Europe. Anyone know why? Just curious. Glad the boat’s out. But I’m pretty confident she’s beyond economic repair. But who said boats were economic anyway

  31. Those Big Red Buttons were not just a power off switch. Hitting one of them caused all sorts of bad shit - it took the techs literally hours to reset everything that button blew. When I started I was told that even smoke & flames coming out of the top vents was not a good enough reason to hit it - the regular power off button was adequate for that. A wall of water heading for the computer room was basically the only adequate excuse (due to the 440 volt power and aluminium raised floor)

  33. Yeah, you really can't get around the grinding and filing on the brazed work, but the first example was not even bead blasted to take out the heat affected zone discoloration. That small border of an almost straw color shows just how well that TIG weld was done. The article that was in said that the judges could only find the start/stop point of the welds on that bike in a couple of places. Now that takes talent! This ain't too shabby either but looks to have been blasted.

  45. OMFG! Back around 1981 I was young, dumb, injured and unemployed and took a job delivering MacGregors from Costa Mesa, CA to the East. The gig was they'd give you $200 cash, load 4 boats on a POS end of life truck with a 55 MPH limiter towing a POS end of life trailer. Every other day or so you had to call the office and arrange to have another $200 wired to you. If you ran out of money on Friday and didn't get to a phone in time, tough shit till Monday. You slept in the boats on the way East and in the truck or on the ground on the way back. Pay was $.06/ mile based on their mileage ta
