  5. His musical style was certainly a spin on a throwback to old tin pan alley/blues/jazz kinda music and he brought a very improvisational style to that genre. Even his attire was a throwback. I really liked it. Dr John, Ricki Lee Jones and a couple other singers that bring to that genre their own special sound. He wasn't an "everyday listen" for me.......nor are there many of those in my playlist, but in the right mood........he was spectacular.

  7. Too much waffle here but I think I have the story. In summary, WS will retain the Laser /ILCA boat in the Olympics only if other new builders can builds boats. ICLA consider Olypmic status important, are desperate to retain Olympic status and are organising several new builders to replace LPE, the biggest builder who owns the trademark in most of the world , and by changing association rules and the class name etc LPE do not want to give up their trademark to others and seem willing to sacrifice Olympic status to win. They have indicated they will continue to build Lasers withou

  8. +1 On a slightly different topic, in my opinion there are far too few protests filed in our self policing sport as this leads some competitors to believe (more or less correctly) that they can break the rules with impunity. There should be no negative connotations to filing a protest or being protested unless a competitor files frivolous, losing protests as a routine matter or a competitor routinely violates the rules and routinely is DSQ. In either case the behavior tends to self correct pretty quickly as seen in the SF J-105 Fleet. If a competitor files a protest to "make a point" to a

  10. Thats the thing...in Rajasthan tribes have been using opium for centuries and yes quite a few families have been destroyed but its the same with alcohol. Its the illegality with all that comes with it that does more harm.

  11. Well sure. This is not a binary choice. What we do now is obviously a massive fail on both ends. Mindless prohibition strategies turn sick people into criminals and when the might of big pharma got interested in the recreational narcotic industry they bulldozed right through law and regulation to create a bigger mess than any army of illegal pushers ever could.

  12. I saw Elton John perform Rocket Man from very close by in 2003 at the Harley Davidson centenary celebrations in Milwaukee. With 200.000 bikers and their shiny Harley's in town it was one hell of a rock and blues party. The final big concert was kept a secret, and all the middle aged bikers were expecting Bruce Springsteen or the Rolling Stones to perform. Surprisingly, up came Elton John, and under big boos more than half of those macho bikers left, enabling me to get into the VIP area. Elton apologised that he did not have any bikers songs, and said the best he could do was Rocket Ma

  17. WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—The special counsel Robert Mueller ignited a firestorm of controversy on Wednesday by recommending that millions of Americans read. Mueller, seemingly oblivious to the uproar he was about to create, repeatedly commented that there was valuable information available to the American people only by reading a long book. At the White House, sources said that Donald J. Trump was furious about Mueller’s statement because he interpreted the special counsel’s pro-reading message as a thinly veiled attack on him. Speaking to reporters later, on the White H

  18. I got it and that experience did teach me a valuable lesson about the world. The truth is $125 / hour billing is worth more than the 11 year old invisible kid that just wants to go home and have his dinner. That is a simple truth. I learned it young. I just find it incredibly ironic after all these years to run into one of those late parents - metaphorically speaking. FWIW, the daycare center mostly hired out-of-work teachers. And here's another truth - teachers in California back in the day didn't like to work beyond 4 pm under any conditions. They were TEACHERS. The worked SCHOOL

  23. No surprise for me. When Bush was elected I sold all my US stock. Same with Trump. To do otherwise would simply be stupid. It is not just the policy that is a problem. Markets like stability and political predictability. Investors saw nothing in Bush (Actually Cheney?) or Trump related to stability or predictability. Obama was frustratingly predictable and moderate in all ways. Markets love that as business can focus on making money rather than wars and hysterical antics.

  26. Go for it. And still, as you haven't sailed much, join that local sailing club as well and sail their boats while you learn a bit more, and while you repair / refurb your boat. Depending on time, skill, parts availability and money, the refurb could take all summer and then some. You don't want to risk that. You want to sail in summer (club boats if that's what's at hand), and repair/refurb in winter. If it turns out you dont' enjoy the repair/refurb work, you've gotten your sailing done, and you can pass on the "free" boat to someone who does enjoy it.

  30. It is entirely possible the protesters are both sincere in their belief and wrong. Unlikely you would bother but you could consider gathering more evidence. If you have the time and opportunity you could assemble a group of unbiased / credible folks and do a recreation. Position observers who have both black marks in a line. Position observers where you believe the protesting boat was and where the protesting boat claims it was. Then move a boat towards, over, and back from the line while recording what the different observers describe as the position of the moving boat

  31. As far as Weld is concerned, national Republicans will hate him. First, he's running against Shitstain. Done and done. But if you recall, Bill Clinton nominated Weld to be Ambassador to Mexico. He'd have been a fine choice. Then a sitting governor, he's fluent in Spanish (as well as Latin, Greek and French), former US Attorney. Serious guy. But Jesse Helms hated the fact that Clinton would nominate a Republican moderate on gay rights, abortion rights, and medical marijuana. There was some other intramural nonsense having to do with Ed Meese but his nomination died without a vote.

  32. I don't believe he has any chance. I listened to him on Bill Mahar last night - blegh. Probably a nice guy but boring political pablum. There's no incentive for any republican to really go against Trump at this point. You can't 'out-right' him so you'd be going to the middle but for that demographic to make sense, you'd also have to carve into a significant number of right leaning democrats and that seems to be a TALL order right now.

In the AC75 Foil Arm Testing Success video, Alessandro Franceschetti, Head of Structures, Luna Rosa says: "So after the first generation of the one design we have gone through a full review, from design inputs to design methodologies, from manufacturing techniques. And the second generation is actually an outcome of… We have changed the way we are building it, we have changed the way analyse it and we have included in the design process more details and more accurate inputs in order for the designers and builders to make sure that we accomplish succes

  35. I think that is a pretty fair summary, but all is not lost. There are several avenues that could be explored: 1. WS remove their FRAND requirement. It is not forced on the by EU law, it is a policy choice. The benefit of FRAND is that it potentially allows WS to keep a class in the Olympics longer term without the need for frequent selection trials, which helps everyone with planning. The downside is they have selected a class (and a backup) that are not compliant and with a complex legal structure that needs unpicking. 2. Pick an alternative Olympic class and let commercial realit

  44. Agreed, this sounds like a great outcome. You will get some experience in boat repair (always useful and sometimes enjoyable), and have a nice boat to grow your sailing skills. If you find that you want to upgrade to a higher performance boat in a few years, you can pay it forward and give this boat to someone else starting in the sport. The shop I worked for in high school in the 1980s sold a lot of Capri 14.2s. They are tough little boats, and fairly simple to rig, so I suspect that you should have minimal trouble getting her back on the water in fully functional form. I never sailed o

The Italian, German and Dutch dealers all serve those three entire countries with just three dealers. You don't think they aren't going to come out strongly and support LP?? Of course they are. They are isolated and the three most powerful people in Europe for Laser sailing. That's where thei
