  1. This is Sailing Anarchy. Really no rules. But there are unwritten rules. There is a standard greeting for newbies. There are posters who deserve a certain amount of respect due to the contributions made. There are threads that will always have a place in SA lore. Sols' NCD, Moonlight walks and Chaz, Swans sash weights, Dogzilla, 1000 days, SJ24 around the world, epic coming out of the closet, and so on. Random pic thread is a SA icon. Thanks almost entirely to the efforts of Hobot. He has created a standard for posting in here that is almost impossible to match. That does not mean

  2. This ^ If your mechanic tells you your brakes have 2% of their surface left before they fail, you listen. If you are skeptical and think the mechanic may have an ulterior motive, you get a second opinion. If the second mechanic tells you the same thing, you get new brakes. You don't cook up the idea that your brakes wearing out is a conspiracy constructed by 99% of mechanics so they can get rich. Greta never claimed to be a master mechanic. She's just pointing out (rightly) that we've been told by a lot of mechanics that our brakes are shitty and we are speeding towards a brick wall

  5. So overall the police in America are incredibly well behaved, but I have no issue admitting there are bad examples out there. Sadly those are the ones that get posted to YouTube. I took 24 calls for service today, got cussed out three times and never said a harsh or mean thing to anyone beyond "don't interrupt me" to someone who asked why they were being trespassed then they started yelling at me again. But you won't see any of those calls on YouTube or the 50 something other calls my partners took. Beyond that, most people don't understand how violence works, there isn't a pretty

I am a cop at a fairly small department and am on a regional swat team. Have any questions you have wanted to ask a cop, now is your chance. Keep it civil.

  9. This is actually pretty good stuff, well said. Won't get far trying to convince people to get a horse instead of a dirt toy, but well said What's missing from the righteous movement to reverse global warming is a bit of common sense persuasion. Lengthy beating people over the head with facts is not going to work, nor is interminable virtue-signaling sermons. - DSK

  12. Absolutely not, I am pretty active in the 2nd amendment protection group in this area. But I'm a gun guy, plenty of cops are not and don't value that right like I do. I'm the officer putting on awareness training for our department about the upcoming constitutional carry starting in November.

  13. Its an interesting question, but I'm not sure you are correct. There is no factual data that shows the long term impact to the environment of shifting to renewable energy sources. What we have are projections and models, and hypothesis that say they lessen the impact. They likely will lessen carbon emissions. But that's only one part of the enviroment. As we are not at a 95% of our energy comes from renewable sources yet, we can't actually know the impact, and haven't yet discovered the inevitable unintended consequences. Also, how exactly can you say it will result in economic grow

  14. If we had listened to the climate scientists in the 70s looking for ways to melt the polar ice caps where would be today? Its beyond naive to think Greta is some genius; and doing so completely of her own volition. She’s a high school dropout. She’s never known world without smart phones. She’s never worked a day in her life or struggled for anything. When in the fuck did this become some credible source?!

  15. Dear God this thread is a complete shit show. For shits and giggles, let's just take this entire issue on a risk management basis. Climate change, even viewed through an econometric lens, is going to (already is starting to) wreck havoc on society, governments, health, infrastructure, cities, and nationstate stability. Short term and barely existent gains in petrochemical, fossil fuels, and other industries accelerating the green housing of the Earth are not in any way shape or form worth the long-term impact of increased disease vectors, flooded coastal cities, destroyed housing,

  16. @bodega87, I am glad that at least one person has followed my links above, read the content, understood it, and been inspired by (what remains of!) Michael's clear thinking and writing about all this. There are too few rational and independent voices out there with fairly accurate views of what is happening who are able to share as eloquently as Crichton did. No, Greta, it requires calm thought and action under intense pressure, the exact opposite of panic. Crichton, far older and wiser than Greta, correctly points out that fear is the enemy. Greta, far too young to have forme

Absolutely will not jam inside the masthead block when trailering or whatever. The red thing in image is a plastic stopper ball, $1 at marine supply stores everywhere.

  20. Wait just a second. Folks here are questioning Pelosi's morals? 35% of America loves the Gröpenfuhrer, 90% the GOP likes him despite having the Mueller report in the open, as well as the steady drumbeat of lies he and his administration tells while robbing the poor and middle class of their birthright claim to democracy and a fiscally viable country and SHE's the one we have to hold up to puritan scrutiny? Bullshit. The prosecutor takes his time to prepare a case before pulling the trigger so that justice is served. This is no different. Going off half cocked will have disastro

  22. So the current story is Trump pressured a foreign power to illegally help his reelection. His attorney accidentally admitted it. The President of the United States then admitted that he did it. There is possible evidence Trump said or implied that $250,000,000 in taxpayer money appropriated by Congress would not be paid until they helped Trump defeat his political opponent. The money was only released as the story became headline news. We just went beyond election interference by a foreign power in concert with POTUS. We now went to allegedly trading a quarter of a billion dollars o

  25. .. you go look at your brake pads and find out they have at least 20% left, are wearing at a third of the rate both mechanics say they are, and nothing is out of the ordinary. Then you discover that the break wear indicators they use have changed recently, the older measurements have been adjusted, and both mechanics rely on research into brake pads for their major source of income. btw - you have $100 left to do something on your car.. and you can see that one tyre is completely flat, with a big puncture. What do you do?

  29. DO NOT go up the mast on the hard - on any boat. In my experience, no yard will allow it anyway. Boats on the hard are only propped up, primarily relying on the low CG of the keel to keep them upright. Think of the Ft/Lbs of potential "unrighting arm" you will create at the top of the mast - your weight X mast length. Even on a small boat it will be well into the thousands. On my 29' it would get close to 10,000 with me up there. As long as everything remains perfectly vertical there is no "unrighting arm" of course. Just as long as...... Remember, you are bettin

  31. Comments? OK. Michael Crichton has cobbled together a collection of anecdotes to support his predetermined thesis. He made a living putting together scientifically dubious novels designed to instill the human fear response as an amusement. Why do you put so much weight on the writings of a fabulist? His reference to Ehrlich's "The Population Bomb" is classic misdirection. The book was "wrong" because it was written after certain pattern changes began? Is Crichton's point that world didn't need to be nudged into further understanding of what continued population growth might mean?

  32. You do realize that there is a difference between an impeachment inquiry and impeachment, do you not? If the administration will not allow any oversight whatsoever from the legislature, there must be an impeachment inquiry to get the information the hard way. Otherwise, why have a legislature, lets just turn it over to the king. If the impeachment inquiry uncovers something impeachable, like for instance a lie under oath about a blowjob, then they should proceed to impeachment. But none of that matters. If you couldn't be bothered to read a report about a hostile foreign power's

Have been very fortunate to own many dinghies (including to this day) as well as big offshore cats, many monohulls, and more recently a small tri. There is a thrill of sailing in the dinghy and the tri that you just don't get to the same extent in the monohulls and big cats. After years of looking for a bigger boat to do more cruising on (the tri we had was just too small) and thinking we were going back to a bigger ca

  35. I retired 10 years ago at age 65. Never looked back. Kept hearing stories about driven executives who died within a year of retirement. That was not going to be me absent some unknown, undiagnosed medical malady. Worked out a deal where over the course of the three years before I retired I started cutting back on my responsibilities. My goal was to make the last day of work and the first day of retirement as seamless as possible. For the most part I succeeded. I’m as busy as I choose to be but more and more I find it takes less and less to keep me satisfied. I’m working on life

  42. Please. I know the trolls love to beat up the messenger, and that can change the language of the non-debate going on here but we really shouldn't let them get away with it. As right as you are, Greta is not saying this. She is presenting the documented science and accompanying recommendations that say we need to quickly slow down our 100m barrel daily fossil fuel consumption instead of allowing it to increase. What she is saying - her message time and again - is that it is absurd that she - a kid - is being asked to deliver this message from those adults who have done the research to t

  43. Quite deliberate thumbing the nose at conservationists. It's not just about cars. The Island is 80% national park and holds national historic landmark status. I'm quite sure that Trump/Pence were well and truly advised not to do this. A rich man (private cit) thumbing their nose at environmental restrictions and protections because they can afford a fine, is simply an arsehole. A Vice President that does the same is a Dictators Flunky.

  44. On this occasion @Shootist Jeff is right. Perhaps the military teaches its officers to consider duty and honor. The House has a duty to proceed down the impeachment road. They took an oath to support the constitution. That oath means they cannot wait for the most expedient time, or make calculations based on risk to the party if they fail. Likewise the Senate has a duty to vote on the evidence, not party. It is probable some Republicans are not oath breakers. It is even more likely some will not want to publicly act in a corrupt manner. If the evidence leads to misdemeanors more

Skimming again thru the CCA's Desirable and Undesirable Characteristics of Offshore Yachts, which is a deeply amusing sociological text. Much love is given to the seamanlike & proper leather pad which should always wrap the boom's end, particularly the ends of these nasty, short IOR booms, not like the genteel spars of my day which safely overhung one's transom. I find it sad that so many sailors could give a shit about the environment, if anyone should be aware of the changes that have already occurred it is us, in my many decades on the water I have seen some of these. If you think the coming changes will be good for you and your area you are either extremely fortunate or just kidding yourself. Of course since the average age of most posters is such we will be dead before the shit really hits the fan so not my problem.
