  1. I am sure that Putin has figured out that his Donnie has trouble telling the truth. The spy was probably just to verify that Donnie is following instructions and reporting back accurately.

  3. There just isn't any national interest in sailing here in the U.S. When we sailed in New Zealand it was crazy the amount of boats, specifically sailboats you would see everywhere. We stayed at West Haven Marina when we got to Auckland and it was amazing. I was 12 and was fascinated with all the races going on. You'd see boats coming back in with snapped masts fairly often. It just seemed like a much bigger buy in to the sport there. I think being an island helps as well. It seems like France has the passion as well but I haven't been there so I can't comment personally but the crowds at the st

  4. Hi All, I've made this video to make sailors aware of the issues with modern, digital navigation. The sail training organisations promote traditional navigation, and nobody is really teaching the use of gps. Most navigation accidents are due to failure to navigate, but it's important to understand the possibility of chart errors, and the need for multiple devices. Traditional navigation is a good basis, but most of use only use gps now. Are we just getting lazy, or is the modern way safer?

  5. I don't think that you grasp that the US was given a dominant position in the western world in exchange for political and economic stability at Bretton Woods. This set up a world order where the US was given authority and responsibility. The money of international trade became the US dollar. This gave it a great advantage economically. London continued to be a great business center after WWII, however it wasn't until 1979 that currency restrictions were dropped in the UK. How did this help the UK? Did this provide a cozy nest? However, in the US, there was an economic bloom. The post w

  9. You made me laugh out loud. Parnas is everything that Jake Tapper said and much more. I just wonder why the President of the United States, the Vice President of the United States, the Secretary of State of the United States, the Attorney General of the United States, the Ranking Republican Minority Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, all had business dealings, golf outings, dinners, and other social events all with pictures attached and had him in the Ukraine trying to undermine a former Vice President, trying to get a nomination to run against Donald Trump?

  10. I don't think you've seen the picture. Republicans were crying foul all along, any time they don't get their way. With the advent of Trump, the mask has come off and the Trumpublicans are blatantly anti-democracy. It would not surprise me a bit if they simply cancelled the 2020 election if they don't have sufficient voter suppression and crooked voting machines to ensure victory. Aside from that, there is not doubt in any informed person that Trump courted Russian help interfering in the 2016 election and he's actively prevented steps to secure our election. You think he should be given a

  12. That's a nice pic of the old Wilson Cement Works here in Warkworth. Funny you should show it in the NYYC thread because, it actually has a fair bit of relevance to the USA. By that I mean during WW2, Warkworth and it's surrounding areas was a big R&R area for American GI's in the Pacific. One thing they liked to do in their past time was practise their use of explosives - hence why these old Cement Works buildings are in the state they are now! They were also kind enough when they left, to just push into the old quarry swimming hole their unwanted army vehicles. My Dad always tells a

  17. my experience is that the 'facts' in 'media reports' of incidents like this are mostly (like 75%) flat out wrong, including things they have put into supposed direct quote marks. So if you ask me which I had greater confidence in - direct data from the national weather service or an account in an article - there is no question at all. I also know that sailors when reporting their highest wind speed tend to take their highest gust and add like 15kts to it - that happens time and time again. And who knows, there is occasionally micro burst stuff imbedded in big systems like that . . . . but this

  25. Well, Australia is too big and too rich a land to leave in the hands of naked savages. It would have happened sooner or later. Eastern NC, my blushing homeland which I returned to after seeing what an armpit the rest of the world is, was a refuge for escaped slaves, runaways indenturees, and expelled apprentices. Small difficult ports, cut off by almost impassable swamps, but lots of rivers for internal travel. A cultural flavor that survives to the present day. It was also the scene of one of the few native wars that the natives won.... well, the first two rounds, or about four yea

  40. I think it depends a lot on how and where the boat will be used. Here in the Caribbean most folks prefer a soft dodger/bimini combo, with removable forward panels/windows, so when weather allows (sometimes for weeks or months at a time) you can enjoy shade from the sun, protection from rain, AND a nice breeze through the cockpit, where crew spend a lot of time. Another benefit of the soft dodger I haven't seen mentioned is the ability to remove it during hurricane prep, along with sails, reducing windage. If I expected to spend a goodly amount of time beating to weather with cold air and water
