  1. Hi ya'll. Well this is a son of a bitch. I've weathered a lot of shit and discomfort in my life but this is a MF.....and I would classify my case as moderate. I can't imagine those who become critical.......oh my god.............. So I'm a bit improved but not out of the woods. I'm at day 5 of symptoms. Vitals and overall condition are okay the last couple mornings. Afternoons are a different story. Fever/shakes and low O2 levels, tachycardia, aches - big time - and that persists in waves until bedtime. Still soaking the sheets at night requiring a wash every morning. Zero appetite and ha

  2. Yes, it was lots of fun, particularly for us itinerant boat jockeys. Cowes, Sydney, SORC, Hawaii, Sardinia and about everywhere else too. And some magic deliveries on the big boats. Bashing uphill with a number 5 jib and two reefs, the only decisions were which kite to carry for the next leg, and do we do a bear-away set or gybe set. Or the miraculous race-winning tack-gybe-set if it was a starboard rounding. And which staysail to plug in afterwards. I know I sound like a cracked record, but it really was a metric shed-load of fun.

  4. Just before the gybe, but the main has already swung over. Midnight Sun, Holland 51 in Admiral's Cup 1981. Lars in the pulpit all ready, Timmy "Twinstay" Stearn driving, Jean-Louis Fabry naviguessing, and yours truly in the pit. I took over mainsheet for the rest of the series and the Fastnet after that one. Which we survived OK.

  6. Yeah............but who would I call about the 10 minute grocery trip in a store full of strangers several weeks ago? I mean this county has tested 70,000 people and have 4376 positive. Hundreds of those are in my community. If everyone who is positive notified the grocery stores there is no possible actionable information there, notification or otherwise. They don't exactly take attendance. That doesn't even count non-symptomatic patrons who may be shedding virus. Other part of the problem is this county REFUSES to make wearing masks in essential stores mandatory they only recommend it. So th

  7. Nice move. Equally nice was the jibe and simultaneous peel from reaching kite to running kite and blooper that the Aussies pulled off right in front of the StFYC bar in 25 knots. Seemed like the kite just changed colors at the mark. Amateurs in love with what they were doing and deadly serious about it.

  8. I don't remember, actually. May have been. Lots of anchoring techniques anyway. Like the 83 Channel Race when the whole AC fleet was anchored just West of CH1 off Cherbourg in a sluicing West-going tide. I thought I'd try an experiment and half an hour before the predicted change of tide direction I started logging boat speed (tide speed) every minute on a bit of graph paper to estimate the exact moment when it would hit zero. About 30 seconds before the calculated turn, I got our excellent Japanese crew to start hauling short on the anchor cable. It was still going West at one

  9. What strikes me, as an outsider, is that after three years you still cannot bring yourself to name “the other choice”, as if she was the essence of turpitude instead of a politician with impeccable, if conventional, credentials At this point, it’s no longer rational antipahy but a deep-seated hatred - evidently shared by a substantial portion of the US population. Curious why - Obama I can understand, he’s a n****r, but Hillary’s just a woman, she as president would have been that dangerous to your manhood?

He inherited a roaring economy and then since has done nothing but remove hard nailed but necessary environmental and business restrictions to any dopey cunt that asked him while stroking his ego whilst spending the farm out from under your kids. The concept of a (political) administration picking judges is so fucking insane It’s not worth discussing anything further on that matter. He has done the exact opposite to your claim of improving trade deals. You need to get out more, there is zero, I mean zero countries that want anything to do with the US, a

  14. While we're doing these IOR reminiscences, who remembers the tack gybe set? 45 to 65-footer, starboard rounding, typical in the Solent, with the next leg DDW. Also at times on twelves. Approach the mark near or on the starboard tack layline, giving you lots of rights. Put the kite bag on the foredeck, well forward. Pole goes up on starboard side, both ends, and just before you get to the mark pull the kite tack back into the pole end, and a bit more, like 6 feet off the headstay. Make sure you've really banded the tack or it's a nightmare. The foreguy is just two turns on t

A fact which you routinely attempt to ignore. You've finally tried to go too far. You simply can't argue this and even attempt to claim you're being truthful. And anyone with even an iota of integrity can see you for the fonferer you really are.

  17. We know career DOJ prosecutors prosecuted him. We know the FBI said he could have his lawyer present and that it wouldn't slow the interview. We're not aware of any exculpatory evidence because the judge hasn't ruled on 'it'. We know that he signed his guilty plea in open court with his lawyers present who signed it as well. The guilty plea specifically stated that he hadn't been coerced. The judge specifically asked whether he'd been coerced and Flynn said no. We know Dog lies.

  19. A Philip Rhodes designed, O'Day Outlaw. 26' OA with an 8' cockpit, a nice feature in this size boat, especially for how these kids use it. Great boats but this one, like a growing field of old sailboats in my neck of the woods, had reached 0 value due to lack of the maintenance that all of us here perform or have performed. It was rejected by our Local YMCA Boat Auction, which is happening regularly to people that are trying to get rid of boats with no use to the owners. It's a pretty boat given some distance from the lens. And today, it's dry below.

Loved the sail inventories as a sailmaker, light #1, Heavy #1, Medium #1, #2,3,4, storm jib and staysails, spinnakers, bloopers, and on and on plus the winch farms and hydraulics for everything. Great to see the photos, definitely brings back a lot of memories, and did we have fun when not on the race course? Just sayin, what happened at the regatta stayed at the regatta.

  29. I've had a couple of cover shots accepted at Good Old Boat. These days, they keep telling me that GOB is looking for people on the covers. Our kids live away these days but our daughter was with us on a hot day sailing. She'd been in and out of the water all day, as she always has, and had a bathing suit top on. I liked the colors (red is killer against Maine background), and the young confident girl at the wheel, I took a few quick shots. Later that year GOB asked me if I had any cover shots. Going through a bunch, I scrolled to this one. I like it, but I'm her Dad.

  30. Hunter 260: trying to check a lot of design bullets means compromising performance. Every boat is a compromise. The 260, shoal draft, beamy to fit an interior, smallish stern hung rudder means it will be a bit squirrelly upwind. As others said, flatten sails upwind as much as possible by tightening the rig. You can also crank the centerboard up partway upwind in a breeze. This will move the center of lateral hydro force up and aft reducing heeling moment and weather helm a bit, I do this in my 40 ft centerboarder and it makes a significant difference upwind in breeze. The rudder un

It will be a solo ocean race of 3,600 miles (6,600 km) around a large culminating triangle on the edge of the Arctic Circle. This event is a real “prologue” for the Vendée Globe. It will allow skippers to test their boat recently out of the yard and, for some, to qualify for the solo round the world trip nonstop and without assistance from November 8. The race should last ten to twelve days - st

  36. @2airishuman I hesitate to suggest this, but maybe your exploration period boat should be a trailerable power boat. You would have more comfort, easier for Mrs. 2air to get around, easy to trailer and launch. Say around 26 feet, OB powered. Something like the Bowler Weekend Cruiser comes to mind: http://www.dhylanboats.com/design/plans/bowler_plans/

  37. Hi Salona, That's what I mean, having no traveller seems such a waste over a concern it is a 'hazard'. Any control line holding a sail under tension is a 'hazard', so I don't understand the concern over a traveller. There is more risk in that eased mainsheet on the Shipman 63 stretching across half the cockpit than a traveller, I wouldn't want to be anywhere on that low side.

And I didn't whine about overtime - I was pointing out that people in the public sector, in being productive, often work harder and longer than people like you are prepared to give them credit for. You have (to use an Americanism) doubled down on your position - thereby proving my point. And just for the record, I have worked for private enterprise (including starting a business that will celebrate 40 years soon) as well as government.

  47. Zonker, I was shown this method over 40 years ago by a friend, multihull designer, Malcolm Tennant and it is commonly used in New Zealand. I have built everything from a retractable bulb keel foil, a rudder for a Searunner 31 and various other constant chord blades although I believe you could do tapered ones too. You have a Sheetmetal shop fold a sheet of 16ga aluminum or steel down the center to 45 degrees to act as the mold. If they have the dies of the nose radius you want that's great but i'm rarely that lucky so I usually have to sweep an epoxy fillet into the mold at the desired radius.
