  1. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson was brilliant when he decided to walk with protesters in Flint Michigan. Not only did he gain the trust of the people wanting to march, but he and his officers mixed in with the marchers, enabling them to keep an eye on any potential riot inciters.

  3. Saying they were clearing protesters is language which in my opinion does not come close to reflecting what happened. Americans were violently attacked for doing nothing more than exercising their constitutional rights. Priests were violently attacked in their own church and driven away so that a violent and cowardly man could stand there holding up a book he knows nothing about. I no longer think that comparisons to Hitler are hyperbole. He sees absolutely nothing as sacred. He is evil incarnate. I was wrong in thinking that we could weather him as simply another bad President, as we hav

  4. @kent_island_sailor It's not just racing sailors. I've seen two daysailing/cruising boats this season insist that they were the stand-on vessel when they were not. First guy thought that leeward boat on a different tack was stand-on. Second guy thought that even while under power, sailboats are the stand-on vessel. In my view, clueless powerboats and recreational fishermen are bad enough but sailors who fuck this up are especially egregious.

  6. I don't understand why people still interact with Doggo. He is one of the premier trolls on SA and every time somebody rises to his bait, he jerks himself off to another orgasm. The man is just another worthless piece of Right wing shit, something you scrape off of the bottom of your shoe before you go into your house.

  7. My dad was Antifa across North Africa and through Italy. Suffice to say he may have skewed my view of fascists.... I was taught to hold fascists in low esteem. I know what side he would be on if he were again faced with the choice of fascists or anti-fascists.

  8. "Shakey at best" is being very generous, Leo. The data shows the complete reverse of what is being concluded. A small proportion of UK export growth is occurring away from the EU, not because the UK companies are "targeting" the new markets, but because the buyers in the EU are looking away from the UK as their source of supply for new contracts. This is terrible news for UK companies, and a taste of what will become the norm next year.

  11. The two groups of boaters that think they have rights that they do not: 1. Racing sailors - "I am racing" is not a colreg and you're on port so tack already or pay the fee to rent the river for yourself. 2. Fishermen - Trolling is NOT trawling and unless you have a commercial fishing boat with the correct lights/shapes and have a big assed net behind you, you have no rights. The worst possible situation is when these two groups meet. Then almost worse than that is big powerboat skippers, who think there is exactly one colreg - sailboats have right-of-way. They hate that rul

  12. Now I have to repeat myself. Buy an LP Laser or a used boat. That way you save thousand of dollars and, as a grassroots sailor like me, you don’t miss a beat. Or buy an Aero - a bit more money but less fees. Or buy a trimaran and rid yourself of the grief. PS - grassroots sailors have not bothered joining the association for years and years. In 1983 when I was the District Secretary and we had 3:1 vangs there were plenty of non members racing.

  13. that is an interesting opinion and weird suggestion about using stats so take out the crap schools and the USA ranks 3 to 8 (allegedly) provided you count the inner city schools of all the other countries to be fair you also have to go through other countries and throw out their inner city schools from their stats as well presumably the USA would not be 3 - 8 as you claim it to be once you have selected out the bad schools from Britain, Australia and India etc take out our UK inner city schools and only use the stats from the suburban ones (maybe let us just choos

  14. At keeping the other branches in check? Vote. Speak the fuck up. When was the last time any of us wrote our representatives? You don't have to go full on Marvin Heemeyer, though sometimes that's what it takes. Welcome to why democracies always fail, and our republic will eventually fail. You and I can't agree whether or not somebody should own a tool, what happens when something of moderate importance pops up? When your representatives no longer fear being put on a pike, they'll do whatever the fuck they want to you.

It sickened me yesterday to see security personnel—including members of the National Guard—forcibly and violently clear a path through Lafayette Square to accommodate the president's visit outside St. John's Church. I have to date been reticent to speak out on issues surrounding President Trump's leadership, but we are at an inflection point, and the events of the past few weeks have made it impossible to remain silent. Whatever Trump's goal in conducting his visit, he laid bare his d

Been looking at every video I can find of some fat-bellied, skinny-armed basement dwelling MAGA choad pulling a compund bow or pistol on protestors or playing agent provocateur, and the people who beat their asses just don't seem particularly organized. Can you point me to the person who organizes Antifa events?

  24. So far he loves cycling and sailing, two of my favorite things. He has more fun sailing on the dinghy where he can touch the water and handle the sheets and tiller than on our big boat where he can't do much. He's only 3, so he has a lot of time to change his mind. That photo was taken on a Sunday. On Monday (Memorial Day) it was raining and we were trying to figure out what to do and he got so excited when I said we could go out on the little boat again.

  26. Right-o Back in the 1970's I was honored to meet some US vets of the Spanish Civil War who had fought in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. They were totally clear that they were fighting fascism - the Antifa of that era. As someone once said of them, "If civilization has a future, they saved it." https://theintercept.com/2017/09/30/the-americans-who-fought-fascism-before-wwii/

  27. I wish I could have screenshot it, but my instagram feed was solid black images today expressing solidarity with the radical concept that people shouldn't be shot because they're black, it was just this sea of the same image over and over again, broken only by.... an "American Magic proudly blah blah blah" ad. It was pretty perfect. Another interesting anecdote. While I was on a drive recently, I was switching between a couple podcasts. On a sailing pod, Terry Hutchinson was talking about how decisively the AM team principals including DeVos acted to shut down the team to protect

  28. I believe there is a greater good, and there is plenty of evidence that most people want to contribute to a greater good. Thats as far as “god” goes for me.. The God most people think of is really a construct of organised religion, a product marketed to exploit this need for a greater good. It’s possible to be spiritual without being religious. Our grandsons are an absolute joy.

  31. Since this is the AM thread and it's become very repetitive could we instead redirect some of the energy and emotion and discuss; Why AM has done so little sailing for the last few months. Maybe the mule was to out of date to be used? For over a month the AM boat was "leaving" before it finally did. They could have sailed in Pensacola surely ? I believe I've heard TH talk up both the Italian and NZ B1 designs - saying they will foil sooner (GS has said similiar). Does that mean AM really got their B1 design wrong - or is there some other advantage ? and why ship with the (easy

  33. @Wess and @tillerman I guess you two old codgers either can't keep up or can't remember this post where, courtesy of ILCA when I asked them, the updated fees are described. We don't know the QR sticker fees nor the final costs for boats but will. And it makes no difference to me when. Now lay back down for a nap. And stop asking the same questions over and over and over. But I understand - my grandma used to do that in her 90's as well. Do you remember which one of you has the Aero and which one has the trimaran?

Finally mushrooms and onions on top of the mooz. Cok it HOT so the bottom is seared and the blisters on top are brown Anything less you might as well go to Dominoes.

  38. Don't you all have some kinda suggestion or a hint of something that suggests the press should be free? And that people are allowed to peacefully gather and protest? Something like the first amendment? Or have I got it wrong? Did the second amendment replace the first? I assume no one ever reads as far as the 25th? Seriously, it's probably time you either stand up against these abuses, or admit that by standing aside and doing nothing, you support them. Your president causes people to be beaten so that he can have a photo op.

Bailers are generally under the the thwart so accessible by both the helm and crew but completely out of the way so they won’t be stood on accidentally so moving them fore or aft us not a good idea. Mast looks like an early 90s proctor, the spreader adjusters might be completely siezed up, Aluminium on aluminum. The boom looks a few generations older. Check the opposite bailer, it might also have the same rot issues. Don’t over capitalise, remember that free boats are the most expensive boats.
