  1. Listened to FareVela’s videoconference, tidbits: - they are having excellent sailing conditions in Cagliari. Vascotto (notoriously outspoken) said BA made a big tactical mistake in decamping just as things were improving. The Solent isn’t that great for testing, too - about NZ visas, bringing families etc. since it’s outside their control they aren’t worrying about it. They are very happy about the team’s decision to stay in Sardinia until the last moment - about Boat 2, they laughed out loud about the rumors of it being abandoned. But they wouldn’t say how advanced construction

  2. Well.......I’ve spent an entire 37 year FD career in the streets with cops doing their daily work as a FF, Paramedic, Engine Captain, Battalion (multi station region of a large FD) and finished up at the executive level dealing with the hierarchy of local and regional police departments. I’ve watched - very intimately - most every aspect of police work and how it has evolved over those years. Although my opinions about why are not much more insightful than anyone’s, my observations about the changes.....at least in my corner of the world.....are well informed. I begin with a caveat......g

  3. I'll never forget the first night I spent in Oz, a newly-arrived immigrant from early-80's fascist apartheid South Africa. Watching the news, a reporter was giving a cabinet minister a hard time, basically accusing him of lying or misleading the voters. It was amazing. Where I'd just come from that reporter would have been in a world of deep shit for doing that. Here you can call the Prime Minister a dickhead to his face, and he'll laugh and shrug. His security guys will keep a straight face, but they won't drag you out and beat you senseless around the corner. It's good to live in a

  5. Saorsa, that is a pretty ridiculous response. Of course Trump didn't get specific. He never does - he speaks in the code of a mob boss. Do you think he actually knows anything about suspect restraint? He is a blow hard. He sets the tone. He lowers the standards. He enables the worst. No, I do not like watching rioting, looting and mayhem. Let tell you something - I'm 71, white, married to the same woman for 50 years, a grand daddy, a Navy veteran, a retired businessman, a Republican until 2006. I am the fucking establishment. I don't like the fact that black Americans are marginaliz

This is just above the walkway where several months ago they named a dock in her honour. Jeannis was on a multi-city speaking tour in Australia when the pandemic hit. So she's stuck down there, hoping to fly back to Victoria and sail away to the South Pacific.

We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets; we shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part if it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good tim

  12. On topic but out of place...here's something to consider about the region. The Detroit River Group is a geologic rock unit that contains salt-bearing strata. A mixture of salt, anhydrite and gypsum, the rocks are soft, easy to dissolve and weather faster than other area rock types such as sandstone, carbonate and shale. The group is slightly older and thus underlies the Dundee Limestone, in which this sinkhole formed and that outcrops in the northeastern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. If you reference the area on Google Earth, note the limestone quarries at Rodgers City and Presque Isle. I

IMOCA RDR winner. Still looking for 'several' million euros for his TOR/RDR/VG (2024) campaign. Seems to have leads but nothing is set and the sponsorship field has of course probably changed significantly. Talks a lot about the need to reduce costs in IMOCA, but doesn't mention the TOR in this regard, to make it sustainable and points to Francis Joyon as a great example. Nothing really about the TOR beyon

When that goes tits up, how about the Trump administration sending 2 million doses of those questionable drugs to Venezuela? Do you even notice, or question who benefits? How about Moscow Mitch and his wife getting around 5 Million US from China around the same time he changes his tune and votes to support them? In both the 50 and 60 we have a survival area under the cockpit floor that is accessed when upside down by the second aft escape hatch . This area is above the waterline when the boat is inverted . Maybe overkill , but we have designed the Rapido Trimarans to be the safest offshore cruising boats available . We hope there is never a need for this survival area but it helps me sleep at night when we know we have done everything possible to create a safe fast boat ! This is also why we fit as standard a automatic fire control s

  24. That was Obama's approach, but - maybe - one of his biggest mistakes. If you let people get away with politicizing intelligence, indefinite detention, torture, and fraud so egregious that it causes a global financial crisis... you're allowing the system's foundation to get damaged. People have to able to believe the system is basically fair, or the center won't hold. No amount of eloquence can paper it over. If there's no consequences (for some) for violating the law... you end up where we are now.

  27. The problem is the "good" cops aren't policing the bad cops. Which is why I used quotes around "good." This is why these problems have been allowed to exist for so long. First step we should probably make is to leave the riot gear back at the station for these protests. I know for some, wearing that gear gets them all jacked up. And when cops show up looking like a military force, people get nervous, considering their history. So leave the riot gear home.

  28. I think the basic premise is this isn't really about BLM, the key to it is the condition of the urban working poor, a demographic that extends well into young whites as well as blacks. That article spells out how bad this COVID stuff has hit them. It should come as no surprise that they were looking for a rallying point of some kind, whether or not they were aware they were. Waiters and waitresses who don't qualify for unemployment because nearly all their income are tips? Desperate situation that. There is a general sense of unease in this group due to the ever-widening gap in wealth.

Bleeding edge, hypertechnological sailors ... BTW, Bruni has a very Sicilian sense of humor, you never know when he’s joking or serious. One question was if they were worried about LR’s breakdowns and he said no, in fact they were scheduled: first midship, then the bow, next the transom will fall off ... to which Vascotto vigorously touched himself ...

A little anecdote to illustrate that, had once a wagyu meal in Tokyo, one of the fanciest places, teppanyaki style meaning we (about 8 persons) would sit around a huge cooking plate, chef comes out of the kitchen with a huge chunk of wagyu just like jack's lower pic, he slices it, puts the slices on the plate and next starts an incredible juggling act with ultra sharp knives trimming the meat, gradually slicing it more a

Paint is irrelevant as the fairings probably require constant work to maintain given the amount of flex added to the complexities in the design would suggest some means of disassembly for maintenance and then refinishing. No change to topsides. Rumours of some kind of significant repair recently. Looks like new sensors on the transom, tow testing to prove new code or human interface? Would perhaps suggest a connection to the big wipeout last year and the lack of sailing since - tying the new sens

  37. I understand your point, but your looking at the present not the future. Assuming law enforcement actually has a deterrent value, we must investigate. This is not for the sake of cataloging the alleged crimes of President Trump and his kids. There are a lot of prominent people in Washington very complicit in covering up and enabling all that is happening. Any crimes must be uncovered and the guilty must be brought to light. After Nixon it took less then half a century for US morality to erode from Carter to Trump. If there are no consequences we will sink even lower in less time
