  2. So here goes another interesting and informative look at where we are now by someone who has spent a career in journalism. Since it isn't outrageous it will likely garner the attention most of my threads get. After 44 years I'm finally free to speak the truth about Republicans He also sums up very well why I am now voting straight Democrat having given up on any semblance of fairness and truth in today's GOP. If you find this upsetting then start doing something to fix the damn party so there can again be a choice. I have given up the futile goal of trying to get any bit of moderation

  3. Rig was located. Yesterdays sonar suggested a couple of things but it didn't scream that it was there. Anyways, they dove it today and found it. Still missing a screecher sail in the bag but at least most of it found now!

  4. @TwoLegged I had a good laugh at that, especially the Germans. When I visited my cousin in Florence, my wife and I stopped in at this little jewelry shop. The owner, an older fellow named Mario spoke a bit of English and I only spoke a bit more Italian. We managed a fair conversation with a bit of help from Google Translate. Mario expressed happiness that I was at least attempting to communicate in Italian. He said most tourists come from Ohio and only say "Mama Mia!" We had a good laugh over that and I visited him several more times just to chat. Between my government and pri

  6. Just to drag this shit out... Its worth noting that under the leadership of Coutts and Co, Team NZ had a culture of loyalty and mateship. It was very much boys looking after their boys. Rumour had it that when OK sailor (ie non-Olympic) and Dixon tactician was appointed as High Performance director at Yachting NZ, Coutts and his tight five held a minutes silence at a team briefing. They actively maintained a black list and demanded loyalty from their team. Coutts and Barker directly benefited from a culture of bullying and non questioning loyalty. The irony of course i

  7. While you are speculating, here's some facts: If you contract the virus and don't isolate, you WILL spread it. And some of those who get it, directly or indirectly, from you will die. There are people dead now who said COVID-19 won't be any big deal if they contract it. Your attitude is what keeps the virus spreading and why people are being hospitalized and dying.

  10. thought I would send some pics of us launching from the sailing club. This is the third weekend we have sailed it. Yesterday we took it out in conditions 9 kts gusting 20 to 25! Sort of survival sailing at our level but unspeakable fun!! Flying of waves and planing upwind. I will never forget that feeling of that thing screaming upwind. But downwind, What a freaking beast! It felt like being in a speedboat, dad was trapezing on a broad reach(without the spin up). Really there are no words to to describe the feeling and power of that broad reach. To be honest we felt a little sh

  11. 1st - that video is from Feb 27. Why are you posting such an old video? At that time the 3M N95s were (and still are) in extremely short supply and we all wanted to ensure the HC and 1st Responders could get them. 2nd - the main purpose of the mask is to protect others. If everyone wears one your changes of contracting the virus are lowered significantly. 3rd - Don't be a douche like Sen Ted Cruz who just flew from Houston to Dallas sans mask. 4th - If you don't want to wear a mask just stay the hell away from society. Go self isolate in the boonies and stay there.

  12. Hey Squirrel, reading comprehension not your strong suit? I never complained about the MSRs (though it would be nice if BYC followed theirs regarding multis... but I digress). My issue is with BYC holding the race at all in the midst of a pandemic, with infection rates even now increasing in Michigan due to a decrease in compliance with mask wearing and social distancing. Holding the race knowing full well that hundreds of crew (and even the RC, apparently) would not practice safe public health conduct (as outlined by Marc Rosenthal, above), and therefore be needlessly exposed to serious healt

  13. Generally no aircraft aboard in port. I read that "Bonnie Dick" recently completed a maintenance availability at the NASSCO yard adjacent to the Naval Station and then was moved back to the navy pier. If she was in their drydock, getting her back to the Navy pier as soon as she was afloat to complete the maintenance would be normal "Post availability" there is usually significant maintenance remaining that often requires shutting down various systems and running temporary services that pass through normal fire boundaries. The structures on deck are normally set up by maintenance (USN

  15. He has to be thinking, 40 years, 6 presidents and now this shit? wtf. He deserves the Medal of Freedom although won't get it from the Trump Shlumps. The good part is how much Trump is tormented by somebody that doesn't kiss his ass and has to spend so much time plotting how to get rid of him. Go Fauci.

  16. Look out, it's story time, kids! Reminds me, back around 1977, I'm 26 and living with my gf in a SoCal beach town and the next door neighbor is a scary old cat lady, maybe 80 years old, named Pinky. Pinky grocery shopped every afternoon and there was always a pint of vodka in her shopping cart. Most evenings she would wander around the neighborhood clapping her hands and screaming 'Here Sammy, come on Sammy-bo" at the top of her lungs with her gravel pit voice. Sambo the cat never came, but she got a peek in all the neighbors' windows while walking through their yards. Most of the

  20. i'm not representing a club or a race. i have no official position of leadership or authority. i am not here to establish club or regatta standards for hundreds to follow. while sailing, we did have a few minutes too close, and then we spent the rest of that day like this. but i suspect that for people like you, false equivalencies are just a way of life. now fuck right off.

  25. How can a disease with a 1% mortality rate shut down the U.S? Answered by Franklin Veaux: There are two problems with this question. The US has a population of 328,200,000. If one percent of the population dies, that’s 3,282,000 people dead. Three million people dead would monkey wrench the economy no matter what. That more than doubles the number of annual deaths all at once. The second bit is people keep talking about deaths. Deaths, deaths, deaths. Only one percent die! Just one percent! One is a small number! No big deal, right? What about the people who s

The guy won the Whitbread race as well as set the Circumnavigation record and 24 hr speed record On Club med as well as winning the America’s cup. That’s a very elite club.

  27. Yeah, we have both of those books. Great fun troubleshooting a generator in Panama once with a copy of that book and two phones with Google Translate on them so the technician and I could communicate. Google Translate didn't do so well with things like "stator winding" or "bridge rectifier" either.

  28. As I'm reading the process in which reporting facts degraded into trying not to offend anyone, my mind runs through the past to see if I could remember when we became so afraid of the facts. The glaring elephant in the room is FOX News. I remember when it first began broadcasting. It was quickly labeled FAUX News by people I knew to be left, right and in the middle. We all knew it was just so much bullshit we never thought it would get off the ground. But what we didn't know was there was a fringe group susceptible to conspiracy theories who were far larger in number than anyone r

  31. JimC wrote "They don't actually. It uses what gets called the exclusions algorithm" Yes and to be accurate, USPN also uses an exclusion algorithm in that if the computed dpn differs from the actual dpn by more then some %, the data is excluded from the 100 current data points used for calculating the rating. My two points are that the machinery used to measure a class performance differ in important ways and yield tables that demonstrate the two philosophies. Chocolate or Vanilla.... choose RE " integration with scoring apps comes in. " This is a tougher issue then

  32. Shouldn't be an issue on most modern boats, the only time water gets into my engine compartment is when I have to change the impeller and even then not all that much. I've no problem at all with the electrical side of things, the motor, in fact I will readily admit that its a more efficient, quieter, less smelly method of to push a boat. Its the energy storage that's the problem, until someone comes up with a safe super dense (energy wise) battery or some super efficient & cheap fuel cell then its not practical if you need to go further than 12nm. (ish)

  33. Long history of foolishness. Lots of blah blah blah about it being a good work uni.....lots of complaints about the blue cammies.......frankly there was nothing better for shipboard work than the old bell bottom "jean" dungarees and light blue shirt with rank insignia on sleeve. Also the Cracker Jack dress uni was distinctive and easy to store aboard ship. Just fold and roll those old woolies up and when you shake em out and put them on they look great. Cammies on certain assignments make some sense but not as a USN wide work uniform. Really bad set of decisions I think. But then I just could

  38. Every President seems to have a unique way of shitting.on our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico, American Samoa, et al.. Obama was President when PR finally voted for statehood, and then he did next to nothing to move their vote through Congress. And then the did next to nothing (at least that I could tell) from preventing their bond crisis. Every President has shit on our American brothers and sisters in their own ways. They deserve American citizenship (not that bullshit National thing) and they deserve full statehood.

  39. I'm not sure what you mean - the choking comment was not used by Kiwis to describe Barker or the team (well certainly not any Kiwi worth listening to). The 'choke' was a common refrain from those who enjoyed putting the boot in when ETNZ was down. It's a sad irony that its now being attributed to Kiwis themselves.
