  1. ETNZ are probably favorites .....but win or lose....Team New Zealand have firmly established themselves as the all time great AC nation in the modern era. From the time they first emerged, they have always been contenders. Eventually there will be a challenger that succeeds. The sheer weight of probability and resources says it must be so but the story of your small island nation taking on and beating some of the wealthiest nations in the planet will always be part of my life. Then if you look at the teams that were basically based on NZ talent, it is even more of an incredible story.

  2. Glad you guys like the foil swing, it took a bit of effort to get it all together . Chris Hickey from ETNZ did the installation engineering for me. I had him run the numbers based on 2 x 100kg adults swinging in unison. That kind of loading generates quite a moment on the foundation, and we can't take the risk of the foil ever toppling over. We overkilled the bracket install detail to be super safe. The weak point is the concrete surrounding the M16 studs, Insta account: adrianjpawson video-1612484696.mp4

Don't give a flying fuck about ethnic history, and generally anyone that gets wound up about that should examine their own inner racist... Ditto sexuality, sleep with whatever the hell you like, just don't expect me to cheer you on, because I really don't care. Ditto religion. Whatever imaginary magical sky fairy you believe in is your business... But start demanding special treatment for your views and beliefs, and we've got a problem... 4. I think its important to realize that this crew is on holiday in a charter boat and not greatly experienced in sailing and that boat in general. This is their 3 hour tour. Its a vacation that is supposed to be fun. All of a sudden it turns pear-shaped and they did all of the right things. Reduce sail, PFDs, radio pan pan, etc. Was it fast and efficient? Of course not. They are on holiday and have just enough experience to charter a boat. We can arm chair quarterback this ad nauseum, but they are all still alive, not injuried, new experience, insurance buys new jib. I give them cre

  5. And completely overlooking the fact that LandRover BAR entered and were accepted under the same entity in the 2017 America's Cup. Why did GGYC not reject the entry back in the previous Cup cycle? This situation is not new, and has been widely known for many years - but why does it only comes to prominence a week before a Challenger Final in which GBR have to be favorites to win. It is a commercial device to protect the RYS against financial claim which they may be otherwise unable to do under British Commercial law.

One of the crew may have got eaten as well but I'm not sure. LR have protested them because they had the burgee of the RYS on their transom, not the burgee of the RYSRL. Reports from reliable locals indicate that NZ have cured cavitation and are now working on the sound barrier, though they are taking the precaution of deliberately making the boat unstable so they know what it feels like when they are about to capsize undergo an

  11. Repairs are now complete. Isabelle depart's Salvador today February 5th in the direction of Les Sables d'Olonne to complete her round-the-world trip! She will complete her journey alongside Samantha Davies (Initiatives-Cœur) who has also been sailing off the race for several weeks. I'm so happy to leave. It's also a great relief: the principle of the Vendée Globe is to start in Les Sables d'Olonne and come back to complete the round-the-world race. And even if you can't check all the boxes, it's important when you live an adventure and tell a story to put a final point to it. At the

Also if you read Presuming Ed's post (which I quoted) you will see that they do indeed also run an 'independent' RYSRL regatta. As someone up-thread said - "A Storm in a Teacup". Fuck's sake the Squadron ran the original America's Cup race in 1851 and people are still trying to sow doubts on their entitlement to be there. Let's face it, had it not been for the Royal Yacht Squadron and their racing heritage there WOULD BE NO America's Cup

  14. Our local political cartoonist, Michael DeAdder, recently wrote his mother's obituary. It is awesome. An excerpt: Marilyn loved all children who weren't her own and loved her own children relative to how clean-shaven they were. She excelled at giving the finger, taking no shit and laughing at jokes, preferably in the shade of blue. She did not excel at suffering fools, hiding her disdain, and putting her car in reverse. A voracious reader, she loved true crime, romance novels and theodd political book. Trained as a hairdresser before she was married, she was always doing somebody's

Anna's looking increasingly desperate about this issue because its when she and Qld really start paying the price of her panicky lockdowns. Where we are in a high tourist area of NSW we have NO lockdowns since the first Federal one and our tourism business are absolutely thriving because Gladys done such a great job with CTT without lockdowns. Most in NSW don't want to be the bunnies who pay for Qld's slack CTT culture.

  26. The first versions of the h34 had a wright r1820 large reciprocating radial engine in the nose. Weighing in at 1200lbs dry. While the turbine version s58t has a Pratt Whitney pt6t3 single engine eight 600lbs or the pt6 Canada twin pac which was basically two pt6t3 with a common gearbox weight about 1200lbs I guess in the early versions putting radial engine under rotors would have chewed up cargo space as well.

  28. I've got a different take on it. If you look at the time stamps, he was sailing in prob 35knots and 5-10 minutes later it was doing 70. Put aside for a moment the question of whether he should have been out there at all, or didn't check the weather, and assume this was a surprise line squall or whatever weather affect might be happening off of Santorini. So your out there, have a good angle on your destination, your steady and reefed in 35 knots. You feel the wind starting to pick up. You call for the crew to furl the headsail(probably too late on that call and might've had less

  32. But I would like to see some incredibly heart breaking close racing. Imagine if Prada Cup came down to the last race and then AC final came down to the last race. Sadly, very unlikely. I think Ineos is close to having the talent to win Prada Cup. It will all depend if they have the same boat speed as LR. I think that NZ currently has the package of boat speed and talent. If Ineos have really caught up since December then we would really have a cup to remember. But despite results of round robin, I fear that Ineos were so far behind in December, it is hard for me to believe they

  33. Long story, I was there for the entirety of the final and it was unspeakably cruel. It’s never easy taking on the Americans in their own back yard but this had many unsavoury aspects. No need to replay the saga but one thing that left an indelible mark on me ..... to this day ..... was the incredible courage and spirit of ETNZ. The pride they showed in their country was admirable. Yes, they lost but they fought with distinction and nobody could question their spirit. And I think if those at home who found fault had been there, they would feel ashamed for finding fault.

I am going to 3d print it so I can finish it old fashioned way and that solves small issues with shape. http://www.pilot3d.com/NurbSecrets.htm They made those damn things so well that some of them are still around. One of them appeared to my shed so I had no choice but start to fix it.

  38. The vaccines in question, Pfizer and Astra Zeneca, although the dosing strategy originally comes from Pfizer, where tested in one large dose and then by accident* two small doses, so literally, a single dose is half a dose. So yes a half dose is probably better than no dose, but it has also shown to be more temporary than the full dose. So the UK Government is risking people being half vaccinated, and losing that immunity, and starting over again in 6 months time, all to gain some political clout over "look at our vaccine count"**. * If I'm remember correctly it was they accidentally use

Perhaps not entirely pertinent, but when moving my ISO trimaran test bed around I used my uncle's electric wheelchair much to the amusement of people at the harbour - several videos here: I did have a far more powerful scooter but unfortunately it got smashed up by a car driving into it and leaving it mangled. However, I have just ordered one of these kits with big fat tyres and winch motor: I'm knocking up a frame (kind of similar to this) and will see how we go: I can upgrade motor quite ea

  40. I see. So it is E484K found in B1351 and P1, but not in B117, that is the problem. Of course the mutation’s name comes from the position in the string of RNA (the virus’s genetic code) that it occurs (484). The letter E refers to the amino acid that was originally at this location (glutamic acid). And K refers to the amino acid that is now in that location (lysine). And I suspect you have/had an inkling they may be made in China. I would also think a lot of the other generic gear they sell is made in China, although their foils are made in USA. I bought a knock off centerboard a few years ago in a pinch. I didn't realize that "knock off" meant I would knock a giant chunk off the trailing edge first time I stepped onto the board from a capsize. Anyway - do you take issue with generic gear made in China? Or is it just ILCA gea

In the meantime, we had a cold snap, and man it was cold! (5C-10C, that's 40-50F). Even the water was cold! Brrr. And the wind blew from the West which is rare, and not-so-good. 5kt baseline wind, with 15+kt gusts sneaking between the buildings and landing as "cat's paws" with unpredictable direction shifts. So I'd power up the sail to get - in 5kt - to the windy spot, only to be greeted by 15kt of turbulent, shifty wind. It was s
