  1. Fair dinkum mate, let go of your Seppo memories and get a yacht that is popular in your part of AU and will have a resale value. Plenty of options, a laser would be 50 times better
  2. Would be great to follow the build process.
  3. The Magic Marine harness I have was the same, release the hook and the harness was useless unless you had a replacement hook and installation would not have been easy on a boat. As it is only meant to be released as a last resort and saving your life was a higher priority than continuing to race etc. Later version has a keeper to retain the released hook on the trapeze loop, similar to those used for years that stop the hook releasing when manoeuvring etc. Always hated those so that would be the first thing I would remove. Another income stream for WS, manufacturers would have to submit t
  4. You should buy a harness that delivers the safest option for you now, whether that is with a releaseable hook is up to you. In my opinion it has always been a good idea and was discussed years ago. AS regulations will be introduced whether you agree or not and in a timeframe to allow compliance, trapeze harnesses have a limited life. I understand that you are on a limited budget trying to cobble together a Frankenstein 49er but some items should not be done at the cheapest cost.
  5. Not wanting to be morbid but recent events in my life saw me in hospital amongst patients that were in critical care. While none of us want to think of the inevitable when it does come how do we lessen the stress on our love ones and medical staff on what our wishes are? I witnessed first hand the amount of pressure put on the patient and the family by doctors of what their wishes would be when they faced that decision. Patient had suffered a major heart attack with failing kidneys. Heart surgery was successful but dialysis was not recommended. Doctors were professional but had a point to make
  6. I have been using the Magic Marine harnesses for approx 15 years, older ones like mine had a hook that was spring loaded held in place by a clip with Velcro release tag. Thankfully never had to use in anger, close after hook was trapped in the trampoline lashing. I used the harness recently and as I put weight on it to get on the wire the hook came away from the retaining boss that is held by the clip. What was left looked like it failed due to crevice corrosion. Difficult to buy the replacement hook in Australia as they have change the design with the hook having a wider base and more retaini
  7. Only option in a sane person's mind.
  8. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, at times like this makes you appreciate a good health system and the dedicated people that work in it
  9. Thanks for your work BB, hopefully he is just having well earned R&R with a group of his art students as you suggest. Look forward to a positive outcome and new material. Middle age mature models probably more to my taste.
  10. The Orcas are attending all the major regattas
  11. You OK Sol, missing your fine art submissions?
  12. They are there, if you look at the large flat washers & tube casting. Imperial shifters would suggest an American Rat Rod? Good engineering use of a basic tool, has its place and this may be it.
  13. Ian Franklin built many of his designs for the US market. Keel half moulds hanging on the old workshop wall that was near the Estuary, not sure what happened to them in the shift to the new workshop? Davie Norris may have built some as well after he went out on his own? Southern Fun was a local racer part owned by Ian. Raced hard and put away wet, us young bucks dreamed of owning a yacht like her. From the school of design, if it looked right then it was right. Thanks for your lifes work Mr Davidson, the world is a better place for your efforts.
  14. Done, enough negative people in my real world. For your sake seek professional help
  15. This engine started life as a Perkins 100 series available in many industrial applications. It did have a life prior to Perkins but won't bore you with that. Oil leaks can be hard to trace, good clean and then look for the highest point of the leak. Unlikely to be the sump gasket, check the breather system well.
  16. Only for the exhaust valves. This would be a cam drive prototype driving a normal cam, desmo or possibly a rotary valve? Not sure about valve clearance checks etc. To complex with suggest too much drag to be viable. Keep pushing the envelope.
  17. No electric shitter, your wife won't let you buy it. To be fair neither will mine, not enough hulls
  18. Thanks for your responses, much knowledge that will help me to move forward.
  19. So do I need a straight stitch and 3 step zigzag machine with walking foot to do boat canvas work, sail shades and the odd spinnaker white sail repair etc? The Sailrite machine sounds built down to a price, there are others of similar quality in Australia for less $$. Would I be better with two machines that do each job better? Looking for my retirement brain stimulation work, did upholstery and trimming as extra cash years ago so have some experience . Thanks for any tips.
  20. Snags, is your spell check set to Snaggleies or do you have to correct manually? Must be a challenge if you are calling tactics, I can talk gibberish with the best of them. Especially rum induced
  21. Use stainless wadding to clean to avoid scratches then light oil wipes like you would use for domestic stainless appliances. It will be low grade stainless sold at high grade price.
  22. For someone who didn't want to sand you finally accepted that there was only one way to do it and that was the right way. These are mass produced with low skill to a market acceptable standard. You now have a better than new foil. Well done, can you do mine now,?
  23. It appears to be a 2003 with plenty of info on google re this area. It appears to be wet around the area, like diesel is leaking and possibly combustion gases? When running the engine, backlight the injector and see what is being emitted, give the engine a rev and you should see/hear an increase in smoke and noise if it is combustion gas. Diesel leaking will typically be a drip, if it a mist then you may have bigger issues with the hp pipe or swagged end, If it is just fuel leaking then try tightening the injector high pressure line nut, 17mm from memory. if it is combustion gases then as
