  2. Well, I am using the laymen's definition of plants, not the scientific term, if that is what you mean. Anything other than an animal. Algae would be included because they use photosynthesis. Fungi would not, because they obtain nutrients from dead organic matter which originally was derived from a photosynthesizing organism. A more accurate phrasing would be that all calories that humans consume are derived from photosynthesis. There are a tiny fraction of autotrophs that survive from chemosynthesis near geothermal vents, but they are not in the human food chain.

  5. I definitely think bamboo is the best direction to go as well. It grows amazingly fast and can absorb huge amounts of carbon. If we planted the 2 billion hectares of forests we have cut down with bamboo, we could quickly reverse the rising CO2 levels. However, I also know that there are people who want to use complex shapes for high performance boats, and a substitute for fiberglass is needed.
  6. All calories we consume come from plants. Even if you eat meat (which you shouldn't if you are concerned about carbon foot print) those calories originally came from plants. 100% of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, come from plants.

Even if we ignore that fact that processing and transporting materials is becoming more electric and able to use sustainable energy sources, the amount of carbon produced from traditional sources is a mere fraction of that stored in the woody materials. A semi hauling 24 tons of wood products (Ideally bamboo) is carrying 12 tons of stored carbon will produce around 3/4's of a pound of carbon per mile.   8. Carbon-free meaning use, not manufacture. However, you could have a carbon-free manufactured boat, or even a negative carbon boat if you used enough wood products in its construction.

  11. I wanted to see what everyone's thoughts are on the solar powered yachts that have come out. This one is of concern, because it looks like they found an amateur to do all the electrical work and then got them drunk before hand. Eeeks! But From the price I have seen on other Crowthers of the same size, this one might be a good deal and throw some money in it to fix it up.
