    You're mixing up boats and races and all kinds of things. Rothmans the Rob Humphreys designed maxi was never a ketch and finished 4th in the '89-90 Whitbread under Lawrie Smith, the race that Steinlager 11 won. Lawrie then took Fortuna Extra Lights from the '89-90 race, converted it into a ketch with the most sail area in all the fleet and entered the '93-94 Whitbread, also as Fortuna. The mizzen mast fell down shortly after the start in the first decent puff of wind, followed later the same day by the main mast. Lawrie Smith jumped onto Intrum Justitia, the Whitbread 60, at the start of Leg 2 after skipper Roger Nilson was injured, and set a new 24 hour distance record. He sailed the remainder of the race as skipper of Intrum.

  2. Does anyone know anything about Rampnat ii, The Book "Australia's Year of Sail" volume 1. there is a picture of it leaving the heads in the RSHYR 1982. From a little Googling i found that she is a Lavranos design. The picture of it rafted up at Constitution dock shows that it has such a small rig, next to Apollo and Condor.Was she an early ULDB? Who owned her and where did she go?

    Rampant ii was built in South Africa in '79, sailed in Cape to Uruguay race in '82 and '85 as well as a couple of Sydney Hobarts and the '86 Transpac. Owned by Alan Tucker, who was a very good Flying Dutchman and Finn sailor who, although he emigrated to Aus in the early '80's, continued to be involved in South African Finn sailing until very recently. The boat was designed by Angelo Lavranos, 70' long. Angelo did have a tendency to under-rig boats. I've no idea what happened to her after '86, though.

    The current owner has spent loads of $$ after CD, but not many new sails? Also appears to show a new keel installed 500mm forward from the previous position. I thought after CD ditched John Corby, Greg Elliot was commissioned to design a new keel and moved the position approx 500mm aft. What is going on here?, the current owner might have gone back to John Corby to put the keel back to it's original design position? On a positive note the previous owner (CD) did not have any known delamination problems. At the right price this boat is still a great boat even if there have been a few problems under the Windex!


    The boat can be had for a song, Irvine Laidlaw spent plenty on her, but has a Ker 46 arriving shortly.

  5. Enclosed a foto of „Spilhaus III“ (not spillhouse) ex „Counterpoint“ near Capetown.

    This one being Whitbread watch leader and round the world veteran Ted „Padda“ Kuttels („Atlantic Privateer“) second Swede 55, replacing his red hulled „Sweedy“ (boat no. one, which was lost previously in Mauritus).


    Zeb, in the interest of accuracy, Teddy Kuttel is the owner of "Spilhaus" in Cape Town. He is the brother of Peter "Padda" Kuttel, best known in sailing circles as the owner of "Xargo111" (Swan 65) in the 1981 Whitbread and "Atlantic Privateer" in the 1985 Whitbread. As stated "Spilhaus" is Teddy's second Swede 55, the first, with a red hull was wrecked and sunk on one of the islands north of Mauritius prior to the 1989 Mauritius to Durban race. Teddy has done many many thousands of miles with his beloved "Spilhaus" and continues to sail her actively today.
