  1. There are two big problems with the new class. One is that they are so fast that even a small delta (say 15 seconds) is hundreds of yards so the boats are never close to each other (except for 5 or 10 seconds at the start) which makes for very boring spectating. The other is that with the wind so far forward on the downwind legs there is never any opportunity for the boat behind to gas the boat in front. These things might be good for something or other, but they are not good for match racing.

  3. No, they are ridiculous and impractical for anything larger than dinghies. It requires a hoist with a full crew to step the wing every morning and remove it every evening. How would that work during say, Big Boat Series or Cowes Week? We have all benefited from the many technological advances of the America's Cup designs over the past 170 years, but solid wings won't ever trickle down.

The protest requirements are the same. So informing at the first reasonable opportunity via hail and flag. First reasonable opportunity is very quick. You can't wait to see if anyone does a circle. The word scuttlebutt contains two instances of the same double letter in the form of "tt" This is substantially more instances of "tt" than Latitude 38 or Sailing Illustrated or Sailing Anarchy or Tip n Shaft or Sail-World.   15. Any decent protest committee hears and rules on the question of validity prior to hearing arguments on the merits of the underlying protest. There are many circumstances under which the first reasonable opportunity is not a split second. This is the proper procedure. I have never seen or heard of a PC that was eager to follow bad precedent.
  16. Right, I meant other than size. I sailed on Bravura, and she seemed quite a different boat than, say, Container (not just size).
  17. Please let me know where a punch in the nose is considered perfect manners so I can avoid those parts. You are right that belching can be good manners in some cultures. Insulting volunteers is not good manners in any culture of which I am aware. There is a lot of precedent on what constitutes "first reasonable opportunity."
  18. Fair enough. I have served on a lot of committees, and I have never been in one where the committee dismissed on validity grounds cavalierly or in order to avoid the work of going through the process. Quite to the contrary, most of the people I know who serve on juries enjoy it. Among other things, it makes us better sailors. Folks would lose a lot fewer protests if they occasionally served on juries. Knowing things like time on distance makes for a much more credible presentation.

  20. If the PC is half way decent (and in my experience almost all are) the motivation is not to get back to the beer. This is a hugely insulting to those who volunteer their time to study the rules, get certified and then hear protests. The requirements for a valid protest are not remotely complex. They are there for good reasons. If your protests are getting tossed because they are too complicated for you consider a simpler sport. In your case, a simpler sport where good manners are not valued might be a wise choice.

  22. Hang on a second. Before we worry about the oil spill we first need to talk about the word Richmond. The word comes from the French elements riche ‘rich’, ‘splendid’ + mont ‘hill’. Richmond in North Yorkshire was named after a Richmont in France immediately after the Norman Conquest, and in many if not most cases the English surname can de derived from this place. So first they need a task force to investigate the colonialism, patriarchy and white privilege behind the name Richmond. This will take several months.
