If HR had just lashed a huge pile of HomeDespot building materials together and announced an intent to see if it would float him to the Islands and Points Beyond, we'd all think he was nuts and forget him in 2 days.   2. Jeez, I would think after all that pedanticizing over the etymology of the terms for sheetrock, you guys would know that green sheetrock is not waterproof. Not even particularly water resistant really. The paper itself is 'mildly' more moisture resistant than the non-green stuff and that's it. More like mildew resistant. If it was actually waterproof, the joint compound (pretty sure they call it 'poi' in Hawaii) wouldn't stick to it...
  3. I hope he used Gorilla duct tape. (Couldn't have as his budget is too small, that stuff ain't cheap) Regular gray hardware store duct tape isn't waterproof. I will fall apart in mere days if wet enough.

He just didn't understand why all the neighsayers. (Things like you can't lay up and cure that much glass in that short of time, no matter how many man hours you can afford...) Also note that he was never heard from again...

  12. See, here's the thing. The builder was blind. He thinks it looks just like a Hinckley picnic boat. He is proud of it. He built it in his basement, it took 35 years. It would be cruel to crush his dreams.

  14. The C-24 rudder is a bit shorter than more current designs. A more efficient section and a little more depth can make a big difference. Wouldn't you still have the problem of float rudders sometimes coming out of the water in waves? I reshaped my 30 year old rudder, it was really just a plank with the leading edge rounded and the trailing edge tapered. Ugly. Made a jig and shaped it carefully to a simple NACA section, no deeper but slightly less chord as a result. Amazing difference!   15. Not necessarily true. Many if not most large ocean racing tris fly the mainhull a lot, and only use a single central rudder. Ama rudders: More drag (potentially at least in some instances) More complication (due to the linkages required and all that.) More stuff to rig/derig (due to the linkages required and all that.) It's NOT the Home Depot aspect - a perfectly seaworthy craft can certainly be built entirely from materials available at Home Depot. Even on that scale. It is ENGINEERING that is lacking. The stresses on large cats are enormous, and nothing in that big shed ..er boat.. addresses those stresses (let alone sailing loads) at all. There is no chance of it making any sort of distance.
