  1. Just loved the video. I can relate to this video because the first two times on a boat I had to get rescued and towed in. 15 years later won a Hobie Cat world title Keep going you never know where you will end up. Keep the adventure alive!
  2. Great news, from my experience of Evil Gnome they are a great size boat and they really go hard. I don't understand why everyone is fighting over building f 22's and f 33's when the F85 is neglected. Soon you will be doing this
  3. Usually we are going quite fast in stronger winds so the water pressure stops them going up and down easily, unless you have a frame and pulley setup like the Sailgp boats. That's my thinking anyway. Great picture!

  5. Great week of racing with a good mix of wind, courses, currents and races. Airlie Beach is a good place to lose your crew at night time, which happened regularly, but they turned up every morning for the 8.30 coffee call.I think the term is feeling a bit crusty. Special mention to the committee for a good time. Liked the idea in the morning of getting an SMS for the classes and courses and time to start but especially liked the SMS sign on asking you whether you intended to sail and how many crew onboard.   6. Being a novice at this if I can't store my trailer at the marina then yes this would be helpful. Getting very close now and getting the boat off the water from Wangi, there are many things to do more than I thought. Did I say again that I HATE SEAGULLS! As far as the battle of the gnomes go, will GOOD beat EVIL? Getting excited now but not looking forward to the drive, only 20 hours solo.

Running backstays 3.0 metre foot 1.8 metre square top head Mainsheet 7;1 but run through 40:1 Harken winch and give it heaps 24:1 downhaul Had to reinforce the traveller support beam and have a Harken 3:1 traveller about 1 metre long as we are nearly always creating apparent wind. Evil Gnome finished, line honours 12 hours and first on handicap one lap dash, still had things go wrong, tramp came out of the track on one side early on, jib block attachment broke and had to be tied on but that was all. This is the hardest inshore race in Australia and even doing the 12 hour we got battered, rained on, near lightning strikes, wind squalls from the storms and at the start super hot and no wind, we had it all, the 24 hour guys just double that.   14. Evil Gnome is halfway between Mad Hatters long cabin and the short day sailing one, mine is built with E glass and epoxy with carbon where the plans specify.

I had an F82r and the difference in the float volumes is larger and for the better , I can drive the F85 floats heaps harder and that is why I went to the float rudders as the main hull comes out of the water more putting more load on the centre rudder, other people would not have a problem with the centre rudder only but I push very hard, floats are easy to build, beams are NOT so easy to build but the mods are really worth it, I'd check with Ian Farrier about your current beams being used myself.   17. My boat mast is 12.6 and all up weight fully rigged is 85 kg. I have double spreaders and a top mast stiffener for the masthead spi and backstays as well. The unlimited rig should be called the standard rig as this suits the boat well.
  18. Hi, Truly lovely boats! Truly hope I will get to start building a tri for myself in not too distant future. Two short questions on the rudders Do the rudders simply kick back for folding? And only the motor is used to steer when folded? Many thanks P I only move a short distance in flat water so the motor is ok, but if you had to go further then a temporary small rudder would be necessary, I am thinking of building a small rudder, short tiller and rudder pin all in one to slip into the existing rudder gudgeon on the transom.   19. I am a basic sailor as you know, I thought about it, it was two hard so went with what I know. It doesn't seem to slow down much in the tack BUT we will see. Maybe because one rudder is hardly in the water at all the effect might not be as noticeable like a cat with both hulls in the water while tacking?

I know I'm stating the obvious but what a difference float rudders do on the F85, yesterday in breeze of up to 15knts at Wangi after being very anxious whether the rudder system was going to work as hoped the first sail confirmed it, nice light balanced helm, direct response to tiller and just being able to winch the main on and gain height without losing steering was fantastic, there was some lee helm on the downwind but not bad, now I can rake the mast back more as the rudders are more efficient, even though building the system was a pain in the neck and not cheap and there are some gettin

That is why I now have TWO rudders on the floats, as you can see from the hull flying photo the F85 floats are so buoyant that the main hull lifts up and the rudder is hardly in the water, putting a lot of load on the one rudder so I arrived at the decision to put two rudders on and will trial them on the boat this Sunday at Wangi. There is so much more potential to discover on this boat starting with steering it, I can't wait.

Are you guys talking AUS or US dollars, my estimate for materials only would be around $50k Aus homebuilt no labour and also buying at the right price, add about 1800 person hours to this and you can make a judgement on what they are worth, I know because I tallied my 85 up and it is not as cheap as people dream they should be.
