  3. My dad bought a new one in 1980 after Tony Smith went "back to basics" and shaved all the weight he could out of the earlier version. New boat was masthead rigged with thinner laminates, locally stiffened with foam ribs.   6. Reefing downwind is always more of a challenge than upwind particularly when the sea state has built in a slowly freshening breeze as you delayed, optimistically, thinking the worst had passed. Are you going to round up, risking a stuffed bow, broach or even a sternboard rudder slamming episode or will you haul the leech and luff down while still running in the lower apparent wind that option promises.   7. So there it is - wave slap or windage, you makes your choice and takes your chances! Your Woods design sets the wing structure higher off the water with the center cabin essentially set on top of it. Your daggerboards are more efficient but you pay with the cases intruding through the hull accommodation. Did you ever wonder how she would have performed without the center cabin? Did it contribute to the torsional rigidity of the overall structure. With a successful RTW she obviously did the job which speaks volumes. Sweet paint job!
  8. Vertical bows, longer waterline, higher bridge deck clearance, taller rig with square top, more modern design - which one is going to get to the windward mark (sailing) first? Clue, the boat hiding in the background has 18 hp diesels. My point is that for the (we) revamped older generation catamaran cruiser crowd, the pre charter-focused designs have maybe better potential.
  9. This is our dinghy davit/swim platform which weighs 20 pounds (1" foam cored bi-axial glass skinned) versus 110 pounds (3/8" cored csm and gel coat skinned) that came with the boat. I measured the main under wing clearance at 14" and all the water, diesel and propane tanks are topped off plus all the food storage lockers are stuffed and all the tools are aboard ( plenty). The cockpit floor was raised 11" so there is 25" water clearance under there and yes, she pounds but 80% less than before the diet/mod program.

  11. Or not so big a wave impact. No davits for me - rolling my dinghy up on the swim platform is still so easy at 70 and it makes the cockpit super safe and protected. Plus I can deploy the dinghy in seconds.

Dinghy - I use an inflatable floor 310, around 72 pounds - dump the heavy seat for a home made foam cored glass one that is curved down 3" in the middle for a lower, better rowing spot and save 3 pounds. Just ordered a 2.5 hp, 29 pound Suzuki for it today, Swim platform - stock St Francis 110 pounds, my replacement 20 pounds. Less is more!
  13. Better to try and redistribute the existing payload if you can. What else is far aft apart from the engines? Can you relocate fuel or water tanks? Stuff tends to accumulate in and around the cockpit. Maybe I should have made your sprit out of lead!

  15. That performance difference loaded/unloaded IS less for the porky boat given the same payload. My 16,000 pound, empty 44 footer probably has that 3,000 aboard right now and you are right, it's slower but not that much - upwind probably indiscernible, more so off the wind, especially surfing. The 40 foot trimaran I just sold, designed for a 2,000 pound payload was significantly slower at 8,000 than stripped for racing at under 6,000 - including upwind.

When I built my cruising Tango 32 Kelsall trimaran way back in 1978/9 Derek assured me the ama mounted low aspect keels would do the job - we WERE standing next to the half built GBIV, the most advanced 54' racing trimaran in the world at that point so my mundane little cruiser probably didn't excite him too much - but after a year and a half of pretty adventurous cruising and racing I cut them off in favor of a main hull mounted centerboard primarily because of the poor upwind performance - particularly in bigger waves - it
  17. We cut a piece of 3/4" thick neoprene sheet to fit flush in that aperture and around the saildrive leg with a generous chamfer inside and out it was cemented in place with 3M 4000, faired smooth and given a coat of antifoul.
  18. I have to agree with you guys about the crap but right after you discard it you know it's what we will need - ten years and a day after we stowed it!
  19. The G10 is a lot stronger and was also fully threaded into the prepped hole, the bevel setting the flat, external face a little low with a glass patch over that face out to around 4" diameter. The bore was cut out and faired before the overall Interproyect barrier went on. No internal nut required, clean inside and out - it's part of the boat.
  20. I designed them, bought the G10 bar stock and had a short batch run on CNC. Think there were a couple of each, 3/4" and 1 1/2", extra but won't ever use them, they are bulletproof!
  21. Yesterday with 4 reefs in the mainsail the 75' trimaran UseitAgain did a couple of crash gybes which busted a batten and the batten car - a real hassle to fix. They were in protected water inside Tierro del Fuega during a 50 knot squall. Bet they wish they had a mainsail that flakes on the boom when the halyard is dumped! Early this morning with both crew exhausted, sleeping, below the boat sailed up on the rocks and is currently parked there awaiting assistance. Not my idea of fun.
  22. The early Catanas were decent sailing boats I heard. I replaced all the through hulls with custom, externally threaded into the hull, G10 fittings which are flush on the outside but more for life and strength. Metal suffers corrosion and electrolysis and stock plastic can shear off. My background is in manufacturing pumps so my cost was minimal.

Not sure how your math goes but just for fun I penciled in a square top with a head extending 11' aft of the mast and blended the leech down to match the current 8' 2" roach and the best I can get out of that is an additional 54 sq' or around 5m2 which will call for a 12' gaff batten and an insane sheet load chasing the stupid geometry necessity to haul the tail of that thing anywhere near a beneficial angle of attack.
