  1. I am guessing that schooner would be faster with less sail. But you can't tell the people sailing it.
  2. I was never going to buy an LP Laser. I saw all the news. I was just commenting that their website looks nice and the listed prices are lower. I am kinda glad it's not actually possible to buy those. I wish there was some way to get them off of the top of the Google search results. I have been looking around for a used laser and hopefully soon I will buy one.
  3. I really wish we could have seen 7 AC75s in a fleet race like in the SailGP! And I wish we could see the F50s match racing. I really like watching both boats.

  5. Clarity has been pretty elusive around the Laser/ILCA in recent years. The ILCA website doesn't make it prominently clear how to buy a class legal new boat. You have to navigate the small print and find a certified builder, and it seems that there are none in the US. And if you search for how/where to buy a laser sailboat, LP is there with a really nice website and great prices.
  6. I am curious now about how the top speeds during a race compare for AC75 and the F50. I don't think SailGP is reporting official top speeds, and are reporting in km/h. I guess the AC75s reached low 50 kts. I guess in both cases the top speeds were while rounding a mark - the AC75 the windward gate, and for the F50, the first mark after the reach from the start.

  8. Seems like the people with the resources and will to fund and run AC campaigns have just gotten more thirsty for high tech everything. And high tech has gotten more exciting. It's not much of an incentive to create a whole new class if it's not going to be much more dramatic and different and high tech and fast.

  10. This is true. It's because the NZ boat was more powerful and the LR boat was more efficient. There was not a difference when they were not affecting each other. That was shown over and over again.
  11. The only data that shows the NZ boat being faster is the data that includes when the boats were affecting each other. If you actually watched, you would have seen that the NZ boat called the shifts better, made fewer mistakes, and otherwise were just as good. That counts as outsailing to me.
  12. I look around for a Laser for sale every so often. Seems like there should be more for sale, with so many out there. I guess people just keep them. Any advice on how to get the cheapest Laser and be able to race?

  14. I watched a lot of the racing. What I saw was the italians outsailing the brits and then the kiwis outsailing the italians. All 3 of the boats were very close in speed when one wasn't in the gas. I don't really like the Kiwis. They seem to be OK blokes, but just too cold for me. Ben is a great sailor. Jimmy is a great competitor. But it's more than just the one guy and the boat. The Kiwis just sailed better overall.

  19. I am guessing it would not be remote controlled, but AI controlled. I think it would be a shame. But I would watch.
  20. It's a factor of the amount of power and drag of the leeward/ahead boat. It's an enormous distance for a large schooner or square rigger with all the sails up. It's very small for a boat like a moth. I think it's large for AC75, but they are both powerful and efficient and low drag, so I don't really know how to figure it.
  21. In my experience, and in my imagination, the wind "on their hip" is a slight header and a slight lull, compared to the true wind. But no real turbulence.
  22. I’ve been a little absent the past couple of days. But my first thought tonight is that if the races were shorter like some commentators have said, LR would be on match point rather than TR.
  23. Seems like those volvo pictures are really mostly just showing the tip vortices, rather than the entirety of the affect of the sails.
  24. There's no good way to get the detail, but the building consensus is that these very powerful boats leave a huge amount of bad air behind them and to leeward. It's evident in the lack of any lead changes, as well as the difficulty getting power in the starting area after a jibe. And it just makes sense. Powerful rigs are going to disturb a bunch of air. Land yachts are generally much more easily driven, and much less powerful, AFAIK, so I would think these boats have more "wing wash".
