Did Chittagong, Bangladesh the previous trip, where the harbor was too shallow to accommodate the draft of the ship.   7. Argh! This is becoming one of my biggest pet peeves (even bigger than all those $&@#s who don’t put the #*^£ing shopping carts back where they &@$€ing belong, dammit).   8. If memory serves (I haven’t googled it) around 2000 a group did a near-exact replica of an open Viking ship using authentic techniques. It was then sailed from Iceland to Newfoundland, and I can remember thinking it took a rather long and uncomfortable time doing it. ok, googled it….. You’re probably better off getting a touch up paint direct, but I discovered recently that Epiphanes will special mix color match paint for any other manufacturer (it helps that the U.S. distributor is located just down the road). What I remember, other than it being so godawful hot that cleaning tanks was akin to being steamed alive (it was so hot near the top of the tanks that you literally (literally literally, not figuratively literally) couldn’t breathe without the risk of searing your lungs), was the absolutely non-stop traffic on channel 16. For what it’s worth, sometimes you see ships/boats that are supposed to have all-round lights in a row vertically (r-w-r, r-r, w-r, r-w, etc) will have 2 sets on either side of a mast so as to be actually visible all the way around. Guessing this is the case here? Dunno. Otherwise looks like a standard masthead, fwd masthead, RAM (2 sets) and port side light. On another subject, around here have been noticing that the USCG fast rescue and motor lifeboats have also been running around with no AIS. Of all the government boats you’d actually want to find….
  18. I also am ambivalent to lobster…. A couple seasons in the tourist trade with them weekly was enough. I’d prefer crab, though they are harder to deal with (but available either free or $1 each from a neighboring boat). When lobsters do make it on the menu, we’ve switched to grilling and will never go back to boiling. Tastes better, and all the smell/mess remains outside. And for the love of god, don’t boil/steam/or otherwise cook a lobster with the rubber bands on!
  19. You’re welcome! My (admittedly, limited) experience with Garmin is that they will support their products for a generation or two and then drop them for the latest and greatest. Perhaps that is no longer the case; I don’t know. I was soured on them once and thus will no longer consider their products (listening, Garmin?? And everyone else?). I have Furuno equipment dating to 1996 that still works and still gets factory support, so anything new will come from them or a similar company. I’ll spend the extra boat bucks for that, thank you.   20. Like I said, for what I paid for it, it’s great. There are several different versions and price points. The $5 one was “SEAiq USA”, which includes NOAA charts only for US waters and territories. To save memory, one can select which zone(s) you want downloaded. For me in Maine, for example, I’ve just got Block Island to Canadian Border. Charts are selectable ENC or RNC (for as long as RNC lasts I suppose). As stated, I prefer ENC, though as noted above it does lack all land detail, which is a shame (and I poked in my home iPad and it does number the buoys. I may have been thinking of the
  21. For what it’s worth, I do like the ENC charts, for the most part. I have an iPad chart plotter on a boat that is my work place. As I spend time in the 20 knot range, I appreciate that I can run head up in portrait mode and get a good long look at what’s ahead of me. All the data, like depth numbers, landmark labels and such, get oriented right side up and are readable without having to turn your head. They also scale and are legible at different zoom levels. Town hasn’t been the same since they closed) full of Friday night drunks on a TV with the sound off. Nobody had any idea what was going on, but that did not prevent lots of loud commentary and cheering when it seemed that something might have happened. I swerved to the right to the breakdown lane, deer did a 180 and jumped. Caught her midair right in the windshield.
