Some of my old sailing photos

Let's start with this late afternoon image from a Chi-Mac Race, late on Saturday, southeast of Waukegan.

 

I know nothing about the yacht except her name and sail number. The date may be wrong; the negative was loose.

This image was scanned from the neg.

 

I'd like to know more, like where Floridian was from, who owned her, sailed on her, etc. : )

 

Is there a comprehensive list of sail numbers and their yachts anywhere online these days?

Such information would be helpful in getting images to owners and crew via the internet. Thanks. : )

 

Does anybody have scratch sheets/entry list for Chi-Mac races 1980-83? This was not taken in 1983, when I used a helicopter.

She was home-built (and designed?) by a guy in Chicago, name of Lee something-or other? Boat was at Crowley's for several years in th emid-80's while it was being put together. Don't remember much else.

She was home-built (and designed?) by a guy in Chicago, name of Lee something-or other? Boat was at Crowley's for several years in th emid-80's while it was being put together. Don't remember much else.

 

At the time, Lee Austin was a clever metal fabricator and a fine welder.

 

The boat was built using standard size prefabricated aluminum sheets, to which he had access, pliable enough to be welded on to a metal frame.

 

Construction method was both practical and relatively inexpensive

 

The main sheet system was triangulated, so there was no main car/traveler.

Saw that boat parked behind a house on the New River i n Ft Lauderdale for a few years, then I think Wilma took the mast down. Have not seen it since then. Could be wrong

 

No, you are correct, I saw it there too in the past few years while on a dinner cruise, not sure about the stick coming down part.

the Finish Line section in Yacht Racing & Cruising magazine, back in 1984.

The best thing about that picture is the paint job.

 

Spinnaker trimmers are you blind; the chute is tighter than pentyhose on a pregnant hippopotamus.

 

Smoke the spin sheet at least 10' while trimming back the pole so that it leads the spin shoulder a bit; adjust spin sheet as necessary to fly ~1.5' curl up high.

 

Move the tall boy tack as far outboard as possible and a bit aft.

 

Ease the vang a bit; the main leach is too tight.

 

In general; "when in doubt, let it out".

 

Driver and crew stop gawking at the UFO.

I don't sell photos any longer, but sold a lot of 30x40's for $350 each back in the day.

Only the latest DSLR's can match the resolution of the medium format camera I used.

My negatives were about 20% larger than negs from a Hassselblad, from the same 220 film.

My negs measure 54x70mm. My camera was a Pentax 6x7. It looked like a giant 35mm camera.

Love all these old pics. Takes be back to when I worked as a sailmaker in the 70's early 80's through the days of dacron to where we started with laminates but still mostly cross cut mains and headsails. The start of modifications to corners and leaches to manage load but not yet everything tri radial( except spinnys). Oh and we worked on floors and tables and cut and shaped by hand with damn good results!

 

Also sailed lots of IOR boats so love seeing the tallboy shot and would love to see any shots with bloopers.

Not Heritage. Definitely a C&C 61, but I don't think it is Brassy. Brassy was using Norths in '84 and that looks like a Hood two ply leach job…..

What was the name of the C&C 61 out of Detroit?

There was a 3rd 61 on the lakes that year. I remember they were 1,2,3 in the Queen's which was a power reach all night. I thought it had a Spanish-sounding name but could be wrong.

Kohinoor - or something like that. They had a fractional rig.

Infinity (which became Colonia) was a bit bigger at 47'. Had a triple spreader rig, grinder pedistal and the transom was a bit larger. Got a pic at home to scan...

Actually there were a number of infinitys (of John Thomson fame). The original IOR Infinity was a Holland 40 sister to Imp. I believe the next one was the 47 and then there was a 51. I think they were all Hollands, but could easily be wrong on this. She was kept in Manhasset Bay on Long Island Sound, but did SORC's and many other things.

Here's a famous old yacht, Windancer, ex-Intrepid, which had been converted for racing on the Great Lakes.

That would have been the first year for the boat (1983) aka WIndancer III. Beautiful boat with great history, but she was just not the boat anymore for that time. Great pics.

 

Edit- The boat is in Newport not NY. And when it sailed as Windancer, she kept the Intrepid name on the transom.

Bring on the hate, but I think these boats are all so much prettier than the boats of today. Looking at Sassy makes me swoon. Just a beautiful yacht. Today's boats just don't have that style.

There used to be a picture of Heritage returning to the dock with a broken stick... in the background was the Edmund Fitzgerald. The picture was hanging on the wall at the old crowly's yard.

 

just saw a this pic at a private cottage in arcadia, michigan. i couldn't believe my eyes, a busted up heritage and the fitz passing behind in the background. and not the distant background either. maybe 100' feet between the boats. i was nearly drunk enough to steal it. kick ass picture.

The interesting thing is Heritage was launched in 1970 and the Fitzgerald sank in 1975. I wouldn't have thought it likely that Heritage was on the lakes before 1975, but the photo doesn't lie, I guess. Anyone know when Heritage got out to the lakes?

I have one of those photos on my wall. As I recall, Eric Schlageter (Graham & Schlageter Yacht Design) took the photo. Last I heard the negative resides at someones home in Holland MI.

 

I think Heritage dropped their rig at or near the start of the Pt Huron Mac on two different occasions (maybe someone else has a better recollection). Heritage was/is a very cool boat. Wildman's group sailed it very well - and had more fun than almost anyone else. So completely different than the C&C 61's, but they were very, very evenly matched in boatspeed.

Any of the 12M that became Heritage? Brings back memories of walking the docks of the Black River in Port Huron before the BYC Mack race...

Charley built 'Heritage' in St. Pete and she sailed on her own bottom to the defender series races. Probably the last America's Cup contending boat to do so. She was almost dropped on the seawall on her initial launch day and some timely moves by the crane operator saved her from crashing. Although Charley did not realize his dream of her winning the AC and then on to a becoming a successful ocean racer (ala Ted Turner w/ 'American Eagle') she did go on to some success in various races over the years. I saw her in '73 at the Coast Guard docks in terrible shape. It was good to hear about her restoration several years later into a yacht. Even then the varnished wood looked pretty.

 

And though many do not think so, in 1967 'Intrepid' may be a more radical boat than what 'Australia II' was in 1983. A 12 with a seperate rudder from the keel was radical stuff back then.

I love that shot, current problem and problem yet to occur-a reminder that when you get up in the morning you never know how your day is going to go.......

 

I think the shot was taken well after the dismasting. The mast obviously wouldn't have fallen on centerline. No one seems too stressed...look at the guys lounging on the foredeck and the absence of attention the mast is getting. I don't even think everyone's on deck as I only count 11 or so. Finally, I think they're slowly motoring.

 

With that said, fantastic picture.

There was a boat flying a blooper at Offsoundings this past weekend. Perfect race for it since there was just enough wind for them to go dead to the gybe mark. Looked pretty cool and eye-catching.

I still don't know how anyone could consider renaming Intrepid. Nice shots Larry. Keep 'em coming if you've got more.

 

Here we go again. The then owner has had a series of boats named Windancer on the GL going back over thirty years, I have sailed with him for the last several years. The boat kept the name Intrepid on the transom when it was campaigned as Windancer. For all of you purists that are outraged that someone could take a hallowed 12 Meter and convert it for offshore racing and gasp..put their own name on it, answer a simple question. Were you willing to buy the boat (in 1982-83) and restore and maintain it as a vintage/obsolete limited purpose boat?. Was anyone at that time? It got sailed and maintained for several years when too many old 12s rotted away in obscurity in boatyards and wound up as dumpster fill. Which would you prefer?.

No worries Barley, I saw your previous posts. It is great that there are folks with the money who are willing to save these boats. We've really got to hand it to the folks in Newport who are not only saving these boats, but racing them on a weekly basis.

Her's a great shot of the yacht Atalanta. This was taken during the Round The County race in the PNW. The wind was over 40, ,with the 2.2oz kite. The old girl weighs in at 118,000lbs. We were doing about 16kts at the time.

Just imagining the loads on the rig and spin gear at that point is enough to make me shudder. No place for the timid.

That photo was taken in the St Clair River, American side, under the Blue Water Bridge by and published in Port Huron Times Herald, the year? Fitz. up-bound, Heritage down bound. During the BYC Mac. Heritage found bottom stopped , the top broke over close to Lexington? soon after the start.

It was a great ride, yes a little scary....Then it all went "South" when we had to gybe......

ATALANTA is an amazing boat. It carries 40,000 lbs. of lead! That's almost 2 Santa Cruz 70's as ballast.

 

She sure is...it was amazing to have the chance to sail on her. The best part is reading the "Ships Log". all the old races, when she was Ondine. Entries from great sailors. They need to turn that into a book for sure.

When I saw the picture from the stern I thought, "wow, that boat looks a lot like Ondine" Sure enough. One hell of a boat in it's day. Huey Long owned her back then. Back in the days of Kialoa III (or IV) and Windward Passage. They didn't plane, but they'd pull a supertanker. Immense power for the day. Equipment was less advanced in terms of load capacity.

Long now has a new Ondine, a 73-ft. 6-in. ketch that is the prettiest, most opulent and—on the chart of her first two races—the fastest-racing yacht on the high seas. Last February, in her competitive debut, Ondine clipped two hours off the course record for the Buenos Aires-Rio run, covering 1,200 miles in less than 190 hours. Two weeks ago, in the 635-mile Newport-Bermuda race, Ondine was becalmed for twelve hours, but still led the 151-boat fleet across the finish. Her time—83 hrs. 12 min.—was a full hour faster than the second boat. Strictly for Power. Unlike most ocean-racing yachts, which are designed to compete on corrected rather than actual time (under a labyrinthine handicapping formula), Ondine is built strictly for brute power. "The only things we're trying to prove," says Long, "are that we can finish first and break records doing it." And hang the expense. Designed by Long Island Architect William Tripps, Ondine has a hull and masts entirely constructed of aluminum; her rigging is stainless steel. It takes 27 winches to handle her 2,900 sq. ft. of sail—including two huge Graydon Smith "coffee grinders" that are improved versions of those used on last year's America's Cup winner, Intrepid, and cost $20,000 apiece. Ondine has two cockpits (to keep other crewmen from interfering with the helmsman), and just about every navigational device short of radar: VOR, Loran, ADF, four wind indicators. Sailing Ondine takes a total crew of 20, including a professional captain, a ship's doctor (who doubles as cook), an engineer, a navigator—Long himself— and 16 deck hands who work in shifts or watches of eight at a time. "Logistics are a substantial problem," admits Long. "Just feeding 20 people and arranging for stores and spare parts is an awesome task." But when it comes to creature comforts, life aboard Ondine is luxurious indeed. The boat can sleep 14 at one time, and all cabins are heated and air-conditioned. There are two showers (one freshwater, one salt) and a genuine Finnish sauna bath— which, when unoccupied, is used for drying spray-drenched clothes.

I could swear that Blaze was a Palmer Johnson built Aluminum boat... Lost her mast in the '86 Mac race... But not absolutely sure...

Yes, the awesome ODay 27,

and almost unbelievably the Islander 41.

There was also a near sister to 'Passage',

Great Britain II.

 

The Islander 41. Youch. Hard to believe the same man drew both that and the 36. GBII was a great Whitbread boat though.

Her's a great shot of the yacht Atalanta. This was taken during the Round The County race in the PNW. The wind was over 40, ,with the 2.2oz kite. The old girl weighs in at 118,000lbs. We were doing about 16kts at the time.

Wow! Winward Passage as a sloop with a 4 spreader mast. Dacron main and kevlar jib.

They broke their mast in the '80 Clipper Cup, But raced BBS that year with the old mast spliced. Also a tiller.

Probably the most awesome boat of the glory days of IOR maxis.

 

Im thinking that would be WP11 out of McConaghys for Rod Muir. She sailed the '80 "Kenwood Cup" series with the referbed WP1 sporting a pilot house acting as the hospitality boat. Muir soon realised the millions he made in radio had just evaporated after 2 years on the Maxi circuit, I hope he had fun.

WP was converted from ketch to sloop in the early 80's I believe, if not a little bit before. Saw her in 83-84 in St. Pete when I understood later from a friend who worked on her that she had just completed a retro-fit. The picture above looks like she could be off the Florida coast, with the light green water and line of condo's along the shoreline.

 

WP always made me think she was the prototype for the Laser. Gurney ignored the CCA/IOR rules as Bob Johnson wanted a barn-door winner for the Transpac. I first saw her in '71, winning it all and accepting the accolades at the Ala Wai basin on Transpac Row. It was redemption for being tossed for barging on the smallest boat in the fleet at the start of the '69 race, a Cal 2-30 IIRC.

Bloopers have fallen out of favor, but you still need one aboard an IOR broaching machine.

 

 

You also need one to look COOL! I was on an old IOR battle wagon for Big Boat this year and asked repeatedly where the darn BLOOPER was!! Next year, I'll bring on myself in some really ugly day-glo colors!!
