Flirt of paget 53
Hi back from a 10 days trip... Progress is good and Flirt now has approx 1000 m of copper wires and interior is coming on fine. My dad has been working on the water tank installation and routing of water hoses and associated things. Here is just a small teaser of one of the supports to keep the water tank in place, made of Swedish spruce and epoxy coated, nice weight reduction was achieved by removing material... More to follow tomorrow.
SloopJonB 12,638
I've got carpenters levels that aren't that nice.
Flirt of paget 53
So many small items seems to be ready at the same time, first we managed to fix the water tanks and make really nice light and strong supports to the water tanks. The longer support is now fitted on the starboard side with a cable channel over the support for the port tank is shorter and will soon be joined by the exhaust hose. Flirt of paget 53
Back in 2010 or 2011 I made the channels for the LED down lights, could never dream that is should take 3-4 years before I finally managed to complete the work . Yesterday and today we marked and drilled for in total 18 white and 10 red down lights brand is Prebit.
Flirt of paget 53
The Alder wood (reasonable light and strong) we use for the panels is coming on nicely Göran is amazing when he cut and adjust only once per panel and the saloon is ready and painted just waiting to be assembled. The starboard side is ready to 90% and I believe that end of next week it will be ready for final sanding, filler and paint before we can install them permanently. Göran has made new stringers in Abachi and adjusted the distance between them so they now will be parallel to the sheer line and each other.
Flirt of paget 53
For-peak is coming on nice and saloon is ready when it comes to white panels. Per has more or less finished all stuff in the aft including charger, autopilot, heater and shore power.
Slick470 244
FOP, looks beautiful. a random question for you. Do you know if there is a name for white boards that you are using for your cabin sides? Are they pre-made or are they being custom built for your project? I would like to re-do parts of my boat in a similar fashion. I doubt they would be that hard to make, but sometimes if you know what something is called you can find it pre-cut for less than the effort of making your own. Thanks! Hi Slick, I don't if you can buy these boards or strips or ribs, part English part Swedish name for these items. We have made them ourselves in American Alder and unfortunately we are missing a few so I need to buy more of this light and form stable wood. After sawing, we sanded each piece in our neighbors giant belt sander. Two coats of primer and then topcoat.
Flirt of paget 53
I just can not imagine any thread beating this one for sheer brilliance, nostalgia = check, DIY = check, artisan skills = check, State of the art techniques and product to compliment project = check. Love it longtime! Thank you very much,
Slick470 244
Thanks for letting me know. They could be any of those names or they could be something like battens, or slats, or something else entirely. I like the look and it is done on so many boats that there should be a name for them. Anyway, the finished product looks amazing. Keep up the good work and keep posting pictures.
Flirt of paget 53
Cesar has been working with the engine box this week and prepared the white panels as well as Zebrano trimming. We made some weight saving activities on the the top as you can see, probably more cosmetic then actual weight saving but it was fun. I will have a wind instrument in the aft cabin so I easily can check wind speed and direction.

We have used a similar product called Wayne's coating . Not sure of spelling but we used it on the interior of a Huckins yacht . I can't remember where we got it but a email to huckins in Jacksonville will sort you out
SloopJonB 12,638
Wainscoting - it's the vertical staving below a chair rail on a dining room wall. The "planks" on hull sides are called battens.
SoAPieceOfStringWalksIntoABar... 0
Ceiling, actually, is the word for the fore and aft strips on the inside of the ribs, often installed with a slight gap for air flow, and should be tapered toward the ends of the boat like carvel planking would be. Usually a lighter wood than the outer planking is used, such as cedar, spruce, or cypress (in North America).
SloopJonB 12,638
Ceiling is comprised of battens - ceiling is the whole thing, not the pieces. At least in my experience.
Flirt of paget 53
A picture from yesterday, I had the opportunity to get up on a big cradle and take a few photos, not much new but she looks like she wants to hit the water this spring/summer. My boat builders are on another mission this week so there is not much to report on that side however we have painted a big number of the battens and will continue with the once in the fore peak. Flirt of paget 53
A couple of years ago I bought, what I thought then, a pair decent working Lewmar 50 Racing winches. I turned out that someone had used them for pulling a lot bigger things then they where intended for, the gears on the shaft was all meshed and it was not possible to use them. I took them to my machine shop friend and asked if he could make new once in Titanium, of course he could so I got the material and they machined them by copying the old once, another company made the gears and suddenly I probably have the lightest Lewmar 50 winches in the world? There was only one small problem, titanium/titanium does not like each other.... I believe the word is galling you turn and instantly there is more then normal friction between the materials. So now we have started to make bushings and sleeves of bronze as well as some other stuff to get these beautiful pieces to like each other. This is suddenly important since I for the first time this late in the year still believe that she will be ready
casc27 151
Titanium gears for winches? Wow...This sure is fun to watch.

Flirt of paget 53
Agree, I might have done a few crazy things on this project and here is another one... The release valve knob on the Navtec panel was badly damaged and ugly so I asked my friend Peter if he could make a better one. The boat builder boys are back again and progress is picking up, next week will be really good, a lot of lose ends and gadgets will be installed.
SloopJonB 12,638
There's an example - mine were nasty so I cleaned them up and painted lock green and release red.
Pinching 18
FOP: Incredible work. Looking at your Navtec release knob, I realized that (1) the boat details are better than new, but also (2) the CNC machining technology to mill the inside of that knob probably didn't exist when the boat was built. And probably only top-secret aerospace was working with titanium back in the day. Thanks (again) for the lessons. It's fun to watch. P
Flirt of paget 53
This is almost 50 years of restoration behavior materializing in this vessel, starting with bikes, furniture, cars, houses. This is the ultimate restoration project however it is kind big and as mentioned before I would probably not go all in at all areas at the same time if I ever get a chance to restore a boat again... Here is the distribution knob for the Navtec panel made of Ti Gr 4 machined and pampered by Peter Lekberg and his fabulous CNC machines.
Flirt of paget 53
My dad has installed the breathers for the water tanks. Maria and I have polished the cover plate to the lower diagonal chainplates. Finally Cesar and I installed the inner jib track on port side, took most of the afternoon and evening, lack of space under deck made it really difficult to get it in place. Tomorrow we will continue to get the last track stops and cars in place. The old man will continue with the water tanks. I will try to prime the new stringers since they have been permanently installed and glued/screwed in place.

Flirt of paget 53
Here is a new update; Göran and Per has been working really hard to get things in place. Göran has made a wardrobe for the aft cabin, Honeycomb 3-axial glass, epoxy and Zebrano veneer. Next step will be to fit the new battens on port side. Per has finished the tech-room behind the aft cabin with more or less everything in place it looks pretty good and today he almost hooked up the batteries but it turns out that we miss a 100 mm cable ladder. Enjoy//FOP

Flirt of paget 53
Thank you very much, I have a feeling she will be a good looking boat in a not too distant time. I have a to do list of 82 topics and I believe that once the list is closed out she will be ready, the status of today is as follows; 16 done and closed 16 started but not finished 50 not started When I realized this I was pretty happy and felt the progress but when I told Maria she started to rolling her eyes and talk funny... Anyway I will close out a number of topics this week. One soon to get on the "done and close" list is installing the white fronts in the galley and close to the stair. The electrical system is looking really impressive and Per has hooked everything up in the aft and has now started to put marking in the electrical cabinet. We have also almost finished the water/tank system last pic today is the valve system to select port or starboard tank. //FOP

Pinching 18
For a selector valve located inside a locker, that's a pretty sweet installation. Even if it isn't made of unobtainium. My work, shall we say, looks substantially more functional than FOP's.

Flirt of paget 53
We are currently working on a number of items and once they are ready we will take a big step forward, possible I can close out 5-6 items next week and START on a few substantial once as well. Finally we have made a decision to make table tops in Divinylcell-epoxy and Awlgrip paint. Material will arrive next week and then... we start to laminate and sand. I am on my way to the shop now to bring out the good old Stern mast, spreaders and fittings, nice spring day here so it will be nice to stay outside for a change. I believe that DIN rail is common, we have it on our other boat and since my boat builders come from Najad I think that also new boats use it. Give me a heads-up once you get to Gothenburg this summer, it would be fun to hang out and show FOP irl, we have not yet set a date but it feels absolutely possible to let her hit the water this summer. Photo show some minor details from this week.

Flirt of paget 53
My dad made a few Zebrano details in solid wood, we removed material to get them lighter and more appealing, yet strong and looking solid. The long piece weighed in on 1349 gram and when we were done the weight was 1009 g in total we removed 349 g of wood. Today they have been epoxy treated and hopefully tomorrow we can start varnish them. Maybe not so fun photos but more to come in second post.

Flirt of paget 53
I have been preparing for the anti-fouling paint, we painted the bottom with 2-coats of Hempel light primer back in January 2012 for the boat show to get something that looked like a finished result, now it is time to finish this and Cesar sanded the bottom with 240 grit paper and then we cleaned it and masked the entire boat. Removed the rudder and finally this afternoon I applied one coat of off-white light primer, nice and thick layer and no paint curtains. The first two show the preparation and the last photo show the final layer of white primer, tomorrow I will try to finish it off by one coat of grey and then one coat of anti-fouling paint. We have this 80 item punch list to close out prior she will hit the water; 31 closed out 23 started not finished 28 not yet started My biggest concern now is the counter tops made out of Divinylcell 15 mm thick and density 60. I cut the outline of the galley top today and it fitted without even ONE adjustment last photo show the bracket to keep the galley fan in place, maybe not so raceish to have a fan but the brackets will be sooo cool and low weight. Flirt of paget 53
Here is today's first update on the last weeks progress, it is amazing to see that my storage rooms step by step get empty and things actually get installed on the boat. We are currently arguing about which day/date we will launch Flirt and as it looks today are we now talking about the last weekend in June or the first in July. Things will be much easier to do on the hard but it is tempting to let her hit the water and just work on the last details while she is in the water. I don't know if I mentioned it before but I have four major areas, rigging, flooring, counter tops and finally the remaining small stuff. It is easy to start making short-cuts now just to finish but I try to do it my traditional way, whatever that means. First photo show the brackets we made for the galley fan and the finished result. Second and third photo is the big counter top in the galley, it looks kind a cool and they are so much lighter then Corian Fourth photo show the sketch for the main hatch arrangement and the dimensions. Flirt of paget 53
Second update First and second photo is for another small weight saving action just for fun, initial weight was 1415 gram and after making this beam hollow the weight was 1105 gram. The third photo show my dad making wood plugs in the honeycomb bulkhead to install the manual valve for the bilge. The fourth photo show one of the electrical bilge pumps. Flirt of paget 53
Fourth update today First photo show the fore-peak the light is actually quit good, I was afraid that it should be dark but it looks really cool if you ask me. Second and third show more details of what we did today. More to follow about the galley and flooring later this week.
