That is great you were working aboard it. When I was in Victoria I visited the Fire hall with the old steam engine pump that was pulled by horses. The retired ff told me it could make 750 gpm, which is impressive. It still works too, they had it working in the parking lot of Capital Iron, in Victoria. Not as impressive as the Duwamish however. Even back in the day, with her original steam power she is mighty impressive. Seattle Fireboat Duwamish | Website
eric1207 177
Glad you enjoyed the link Norse. Though I'm a sailor I enjoy big old engine rooms. The Duwamish was retired in ~1984 and kept in the huge Army Corps of Engineers boat house on the north side of the locks just as you exit into the Lk Washington Ship Canal. The boat house is still there. The boat remained in a semi operational, very reserve, very back up status for a number years when I was a rookie. Weekly bilge inspection from my nearby fire station was important as the fireboat guys downtown did not visit it that often. About 10 or 15 years ago the volunteers at the Historic Wharf brought it out to Lk Washington and gave a damned impressive display just for giggles. The old girl still had it in her. One thing I enjoyed on my weekly sojourn was looking at all the beautiful wood patterns (molds) lining the walls of the engine room. They were used for sand casting the many parts, large and small ,of the giant pumps. And if needed to use again for replacement parts. It was fun to imagine how they all went together. My previous post mentioned the boats at the Historic Wharf as semi zombies. That was just a wink toward relevance to this thread. No disrespect intended. Really they are all very cool but some are tired as there is not much money or volunteers for upkeep. Wood and steel 100 year old boats are hard to keep alive. The exception is the last of the once numerous Steam Mosquito Fleet; the Virginia V. Newbies call her Virginia 5 but those who grew up watching her cruise around Puget Sound and Lake Washington in the 1960's know her as the Virginia Vee. She has had a recent full restoration and has a full schedule of tourist and private cruises. Yeah! She has a wonderful steam whistle that brings out the smiles as she cruises by. Hopefully the other vessels at the port will follow that route and not the fate of the 165' schooner Wawona which languished nearby for decades of hope upon hope that volunteers could out pace the rate of decay, for a full restoration. They (we) lost. RIB Wawona.

Back in the 90s a friend of mine had invested in a ferry service to Key West (A&B Marina) from Fort Myers, and if memory serves, also either Tarpon Springs or New Port Richey. He was trying to position the company to take advantage of when Fidel Castro was going on to his next socialist paradise, resulting in the opening up of Cuba. The vessel was a pretty good sized SWATH. They had run aground so many times up in Tarpon Springs, resulting in getting fresh wheels installed, that they dropped that leg and only ran out of Fort Myers. Needless to say, Fidel outlasted the company, which shut down and then sold the route to another group. - Stumbling
Bugsy 448
30+ years ago I recall the admirals of the big grey boats saying SWATH was the future. Having a stable platform for fighting was considered essential. New Navy ships are usually pretty unstable as the drive to put more and more electronic junk up as high as possible while installing lightweight turbine engines down below. My gawd, many of those boats almost roll over in a heavy dew. (Of course that is sarcastic.) Not to drift this thread, but anyone know why SWATH never caught on with the big grey boat crowd?
SloopJonB 8,583
The main disadvantages to the SWATH hull form are that they have a deeper draft than catamarans and mono-hulled ships. Furthermore, SWATH vessels can use up to 80% more power than an equivalent catamaran because of increased hull surface and more friction. The SWATH design gives exceptional stability in high seas. Apparently they are highly sensitive to loading as well. The smooth ride and big deck space are their main advantages - not enough benefit for a grey boat.

This is probably also one of those situations where the vessel doesn't scale well, as the large deck space doesn't translate into being able to carry loads you would want to put on that much deck space. You probably need to to be displacing the majority of the surface area of the the deck to be useful, which is why aircraft carriers and container ships are monohulls. People keep sending in their checks to pay rent on slips that they don't use. Hence, seemingly vacant slips in full marinas. Acknowledged that it's totally unfair to take such photos in the winter. And my own slip has been ghosted for a season once or twice when I hauled the boat for "a quick project or two." But not year after year. It doesn't really bother me all that much. Now that I am no longer languishing on the waiting list, that is. And I actually benefit from having a double slip all to myself most of the time. But I just received the annual notice of A. The inevitable rate increase and B. Additional clarifications of the rules. It seems that we are now required to actually use our slips, for at least 90 days each year. Slips left vacant will be rented out to someone else. Although I find it difficult to believe that anyone is actually going to be counting the days. Except maybe a frustrated would-be boater on the waiting list...

I don't know if I'd call it "like" but the first boat did catch my attention in its own funky sort of way. I doubt a professional designer was involved and seems more in the "studied 10,000 designs" category. In that case my immediate comparison was to the boat in the second picture, a Herreshoff Meadowlark.
