Sporty but very gratifying with 6-7 knots boats peed (I think I'll leave that Freudian typo right there) and 5 or 7 knots current. Don't know if its proper practice but I figured, with my lack of keel, if I pulled the dagger board up 7/8 it would reduce skittering. Maybe like a skate bug on a pond; above it all. Within two days the descent into turpitude was complete: Roche Harbor with their splintery wooden cleats, then Van Isle with the Evil Incarnate bull rails. My clean and pristine braided dock lines were defiled, slimed, and splintered by the Devil Bull Rails at the first docking. His beads, trinkets and cleats offered to the natives were all rejected, as others who came before plied these trading items. Massive goose nesting area. Once every few years, coyotes would swim out there and decimate the nests on an island. Then swim back to shore after all the food flew away. They must have not liked to swim very much, or they'd have been out there every year. I once saw a herd of White-Tailed Deer swim across the river there. The big buck literally forced the others into the water at antler point. Then he jumped in and lead the way across. But. He didn't realize that he was the only one of them strong enough to swim against the current. All the others were getting swept downstream, behind his back. When he finally looked back, you could just see the little thought-bubble pop up above his head, "Well, fuck...!" And he went swimming downstream, trying to catch up with the rest. Most are double half hitch from an underside bight and a few led back to the boat cleats. Don't need pics as I am well aware of how to tie to bull rails. Passing under and two half hitches is not the best way. Doubling back to the cleats gives perhaps the best chance of being able to sweat the lines tight, but still a very poor third to a decent cleat. Speaking of cleats, the newish marina at Cow Bay in P.R. has cleats and only cleats - so there is some civilization in the wilderness. Going to sit out the gale warning for tomorrow here and then cross the Dixon. Two nights ago, in Lowe Inlet, 131' motorsomething with some idiots on board. Came over in their dinghy and tried to drop crab traps well within our swinging circle. What exactly is wrong with people these days? On our own (little) motorboat, we've done about 660 miles so far this trip, and burned about 200 gallons. Hardly Prius territory, but I can count the days we could have sailed the sailboat on one hand and have a few fingers left.

Norse Horse 611
Last night before home today was in Comox Harbour Authority docks, with bull rails everywhere on the new docks...built in fire connections, 50amp towers, 2 super yachts, Bella somethingorother and one on the cusp of superdom...enough freeboard to be super... An interesting catamaran with a perfectly round tunnel entry like a Douglas fir floating in the water...hmmm Two aluminum sailboats, one with an aluminum tender with tunnel hulls. They look ready for the NWP. A purty lookin gal in wood and a couple of trimarans, one with a rather permanent type for sale sign. And mud, lots of mud....one sailboat stuck on the reef outside the spit, waiting for high tide, as I entered the harbour. Long live the new Comox bull rails, beware the cheap cleats on the poor side of town.

Or you call a 50' a mega yacht? There is a glimmer of hope: Kwatsi Bay has removed the bull rails and installed cleats since last time we were through. Port McNeill muni docks have cleats along with the bull rails, though it is a half hearted effort. Cleats at Echo Bay. North of there not much though. We've gotten to Bella Bella so far, continuing north in the pursuit of cleats. I noticed a few weeks ago when there that Kwatsi Bay marina (?) is for sale. Maybe the cleat upgrade was to make it more enticing for a would-be buyer :-). (We anchored out, so didn't care.)
DDW 1,072
We were in Kwatsi Bay a couple of weeks ago too. Kwatsi Bay Marina is for sale. Echo Bay Marina is for sale. Sullivan Bay Marina is for sale. It seems like the whole Broughton Archipelago is for sale. Here's another picture, this one Fury Cove. The last one was Kumealon Cove. These were taken by Ferries and transmitted through the Fifth Element.
Jud - s/v Sputnik 1,438
Yes, Echo Bay too. I could sort of maybe kinda see doing that, owning/running that marina business. You’d have to really want solitude, however, to live in Kwatsi Bay. Amazingly, they told us they raised two kids there. (Easier in the Internet age, though, for sure.) Growing up with that kind of speed and latency would very quickly drive you insane. 1200 baud dialup was faster and more reliable. I note that the two kids were not there to take over the business. Let it be said that Kwatsi bay is absolutely gorgeous though. Rumors were that Kwatsi may sell to a kayak adventure type outfit. Echo has sold to a first nations group. Sullivan is the largest and most elaborate of the bunch, with some year around income from the float home owners - but I don't have any rumors on that one.

DDW 1,072
Two steps forward, one back. Newest marina in Prince Rupert (Cow Bay) features cleats. Across the border at Ketchikan, also cleats. Then further up the road back to some pretty nasty bull rails. Up thread someone said they'd fished in Alaska for a long time and never seen a bull rail splinter. Perhaps a vision check might be in order. Here is one of a number picked up in ************ Chuck. About the size of a 12 penny nail, potentially life threatening. One feature of the ones here and further on (Wrangell) is they use 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 stock for the rail. Not only a larger obstacle to overcome getting on and off the boat, but the typical loop passed twice round in a clove hitch now eats up about 6' of your dock line, and the friction makes it impossible to get them tight. This scourge needs to be expunged.

Autonomous 1,233
Why would you want your dock lines tight? I see folks doing that but it causes the lines to snatch at the boat cleats. I truly don't understand. Enlighten me please. ************ Damn!

andykane 195
They must have a thing for bull rails. If they wanted cleats they could go down the harbour to the mega yacht marina. If it'll hold a Melges... Closer examination:
DDW 1,072
Gratifying to see that the newer docks in Victoria have proper cleats. As to why you want your dock lines tight, they do need to be tight enough that you can step from the boat to the dock and back. Wrap a line around a rough, pressure treated POS 8x8 and the friction is so great you don't even have to secure it further. Try to move the boat down the dock by sweating in the lines? Forget that....
Autonomous 1,233
Yeah, I guess I'm more of a springline kinda guy.
DDW 1,072
A properly rigged spring line does nothing to keep your boat close to the float. And by the way, it is difficult to rig a proper spring line on bull rails. But then everything is more difficult with bull rails.
Autonomous 1,233
I should have been more descriptive. I usually rig a bow line, forward bow spring, after quarter spring and stern line if there is room. And yes, usually to bull rails. Point is I like to let my boat move with the water rather than let the dock lines yank on it.
