These were actually better built than the Binliner motorboats (well, sailboats don't require the structure that motorboats do... maybe about the same but less load to take) The trailer looks to be in good shape too. The only problem is that it's sure to need new sails, I dunno what other class is close to this size rig to recommend used ones; a custom new set is gonna be in $1k ~ $1500 range. Originally equipped with the cheapest grade of line and fittings too, so personally (I'm spoiled and like nice things) I'd upgrade a lot that stuff which is sure to be old & rattley on top of starting life cheap. In short, if you don't hate the looks, can get it cheap enough to be worth what you're going to have to put into it to get into the shape that will make you happy with it.... GO FOR IT. I have never sailed these things myself but seen them around a fair bit, they're actually a bit better in some respects than the Oday Daysailer. FB- Doug

Of course, I could write the person who posted the ad with so very much detail and information, but the last thing I need on planet earth is another damn boat. My wooden FD is showing some compromise over the fact that a former owner retrofitted a set of damn plastic hatches in the top decks and SAWED THROUGH THE CROSS BEAMS, which cause immediate fracture and disengagement on both centerboard and planking sides where the beams attach under the decking. So now I have a real challenge. Back to the point, the shear doesn't look like an FD, but what other 20 footer would have that setup? Condition looks good. Enough freeboard for a Highlander? WCB 418
How cheap does this Fireball have to go before somebody gets it. $275 in Wisconsin. Is this cheap enough for you?

Did you craft new blade out of wood and coat, or use a molded glass...? Just curious... (I think the Banshee class suffered the same fate as too many other decent rigs...corporate raiding and selling...of that era. Sad, too, as the raiders were MBAs looking for bucks and their greed only gave Performance a boasted Laser population and more reason to screw customers...am certain Kirby would have been greedy enough to not care, IMO... So, how was new governail crafted?

My original rudder, along with the voids, had cracked in one spot and was full of water. For the rudder I built, I had a 'rudder' made from surfboard foam (1/8" smaller in all dimensions) to the drawings of the class foils. It was done by a firm called flyingfoam.com (now gone out of business), they did a superb job and only charged about $90. I then covered that with unidirectional CF, biaxial CF and fiberglass on the outside. Didn't vacuum bag it, but got a pretty good shape out of it. I should have spent the money and vacuumed it, but it turned out fine. I crafted a new rudder head from solid aluminum and new pintles, and it's solid as a rock. If flyingfoam were still in business, I'd do my centerboard, too, although it appears to be better constructed than the rudder.

BobBill 117
Bplip..., Thanks. I did reveiw the Banshee site. Very informative...One pic seems to show a boat with no tansom...did not know that was legal, aside from twisting hull thing. I would need net at least...to keep crap from being flotsam...cans. Also, the long centerboards of wood were sturdy suckers and if clear glassed, pretty, and not prone to twisting or bending on a close reach or beating, in a breeze. Sometime back I read the hulls were FJ's sans 5 inches of gunnel height. Well, if so, ingenious idea as rigs are the max in a blow. Far easier to sail, and faster. than a Laser or the stiff Force 5s, but only my opinion, it is all relative...my current rig is fun and needs some tweaks and keeps me from picking up a Banshee. Hope Gouv plants some honest observations or comparisons. I recall one boat I saw that the owner had put a mid-boom traveler across rig, but never learned if effective, was back when middys were the rage. Probably more trouble than it was worth and illegal. Thanks, very enlightening and fun.

As it is, I contacted mooresailboats.com, and they haven't had any orders yet, but "guess" at a price of $10k <cough>,

That's what shit costs nowadays, and building a boat is highly skilled labor. A couple of problems with the traveler, in smaller boats the weight is disproportionate to the advantage, it's one more line for the skipper to fuck with, it puts a hard stress point at the boom (compared to running the sheet from the end, or end+mid), and since you're going to have a vang anyway, vang-sheeting is simpler/faster. IMHO the only plus of a traveler is that you can play the traveler upwind and avoid adjusting the vang when it's most difficult. But I really hate barking my shins on a square metal bar. BobBill 117
Doug, I sort of agree. Manning or watching another line is a PIA, especially when the benefits are slim...cuts into the fun-factor, to me. My preference is for no midboom travels (stern or transom only, if that) and no spinnakers...wing it. Keep it as simple as can be...and one reason is liked the MO (Malibu Outriggers), Snipes, C and M boats, Banshees, Lehmans, Interclubs,110s (yes I know they fly spinnakers) and some few others. Stingpullers are not my cuppa. And never really cottened to I-canoes etc and some swifties like the 505s, Solings and Fifteens, etc. I raced a I14 once and speed is fine, but so relative, me mellowed and prefer to swill some and smell the roses more. Maybe we have too much time to figit and add go-fasts? But, that is mellow me!

I think mine added a pound? Maybe? I think it helps with sail shape at (granted a minimal) range of boom angles. It also helps remind me not to sheet in too hard, and to sail more to the boat's strengths. Yeah, I know -- new boats just cost that much. That's why I'm fitting a new bailer and cleaning up the bottom on my Banshee this weekend.
