If I had a $ for every person who has offered an empty promise of a a drink when they eventually don't meet me then I would be sailing a much better boat

Well the only BoobTuber crew that made it into your neck of the woods were the Monday Never couple. I didn't see you with a pair of pints for them.

Then again, you've always been an envious socialist asshole, which is why you started this th'd.

bless you for that

you are a lovely, lovely person

In the Heavy Heeling video I appreciate that the woman is intelligent, well-spoken and seems competent and capable. Yes, she's attractive and in a bikini sometimes but she's obviously more than just super cargo and doesn't fill the audio space with banal chatter. Her comments were on point and relevant.

I probably won't subscribe, but they seem better than many of the "tits and tropics" videos that have come across this thread.

Oh please. You just admire the fact that she can pole dance on the forestay. Admittedly, that makes up for a lot of abysmal enunciation. As long as they show more of it. ;)

Did she? I must have missed that, I'll have to have a re-look. :)

Can anyone reccomend an interesting sailing vlog? I understand where to find tits on the internet so am looking for something that is interesting due to content other than tits. Is this a new and revolutionary idea for a sailing vlog? Content that does not center around tits but around sailing adventure etc? Its an out there idea I know!

those two make excellent films

a really well shot adventure

although I seem to remember they were the couple who shot a bear - no idea why

I expect it is a cultural thing a simple minded Englishman would find hard to understand

I don't recall them shooting a bear. I know they had a shotgun on board for defence in case of a close encounter with a bear. Maybe I missed that episode where they used it.

Or you're thinking of the Bixler sailing videos in Alaska. He & his girlfriend shot bears for food. I've got no problems at all with that, I don't shoot for sport but I certainly would for food.

If you're a vegetarian, I respect your lifestyle choice. If you're a meat eater, you're engaging in killing animals by proxy. That makes any moral criticism of hunters very hypocritical, IMO.

But then, I'm an Aussie who grew up shooting animals to eat. Fortunately for the prolific wildlife (3 or 4 rabbits, a dozen wallabies and 6 grey kangaroos last night) living on my property, these days I prefer to eat meat from the local butcher's....

In the UK hunting is associated with privilege, a dozen horsemen hunting 3 kilo cute red foxes with a hundred paid beaters and forty hungry hounds, which on capturing the wild and dangerous fluffball, tear it apart. Sure, in France it is the opposite, hunting is the traditional working man's weekend pastime on foot hunting deer or boar with a rifle. In Canada people seem to enjoy hunting animals that bite back, but then they have always been a bit crazy up there. Elsewhere, I have no idea.

As a cyclist I've never understood why fox hunters need to have 10 land-rovers following them driving erratically and making u turns all over the place. What's the point of having cars if you have horses?

Regarding UK vs France, Is it better to be run down by an aristocratic car or to be shot down by a working man bullet?

either that or be eaten by a bear, hmm tough choice. Def better to get on a boat away from it all.

Can't a cyclist outrun a bear?

Surely that's easier than an ostrich :

I have done a lot of filming in bear country

I spent a summer filming two working cowboys in Wyoming

they were summer pasturing their cattle in the Rockies about fifty miles from yellowstone

it was an area where they would dump bears that had had shown too much interest in tourists

I was filming from horseback and we all carried bear spray with us at all times - even when using the shitter

I was told that if you are on a horse and bear comes after you then you can't use the bear spray for fear of giving your own horse a dose of the spray. Then you have a giddy horse and you still have the bear.

You have to point the horse downhill and make it go as fast as you can because a bear can outrun a horse on any sort of gradient.

They can make a pretty good job of sprinting over a short distance

Galloping a horse down hill is fekkin frightening. If you and the horse do part company at some stage you hope that the bear goes for the horse. If it doesn't then you can use the bear spray

Just a story from an old cameraman

Incidentally, they gave me three horses to ride. Two were great, one was a slow burning shit of a horse. They left it to me to establish which was which.

the Cowboys were both wonderful men

The ranch still exists - owned by lawyers now I beleive

Dylan, so in a short a cyclist without a downhill gradient is potential lunch for a bear!

I dunno the answer to that

whileI was out there the BBc wanted me to interview people who had been attacked by bears for a radio programme

One bloke I spoke to had lost half his scalp and had a haircut now made popular by your president elect.

Every time after that when I was riding my own horse through an english woodland I thought that the absence of bears in Britain has its upsides

Funny, I feel the same about Australia. I lived in Arizona for a while, at least the common bear there was the black bear, not the really big nasty bears they get further north.

We only have poisonous snakes in great variety and they tend to leave people alone if you don't tread on them. Humans aren't food to snakes - not our snakes anyway. I had 2 big tiger snakes living outside the north end of my big workshop all one summer - they used to come out from under a couple of pallets & bask in the sun in a lovely coil of black scaly intertwined snakes. I knew they were there so there was no danger of my treading on them. They never reappeared after the following winter but there are plenty of others about the place.

Two points.

First, fox hunting as done in the UK isn't hunting by my definition.

Second, there is NOTHING 'cute' about a red fox. They are one of the most destructive small predators in existence. I would shoot one on sight, the same as I would (and do) feral cats. Some fuckwit released at least 4 3/4 grown cats here recently - I'm actively trapping them (live traps for the squeamish) and I'll get all of them sooner or later.

Australian small wildlife evolved in the absence of both cats and foxes. I live on an island where there are no foxes and we have a lot more small native animals & birds about the place.

It cost the Australian Government a vast amount of money & time to exterminate foxes & rabbits on Macquarie Island, both species introduced by sealers in the 19th Century. Thanks for that, England.

I am from England - I have never killed a seal.

But I will accept your thanks

cats are terrible for wildlife

As for sheep....

at one time Orkney was covered in woodland.

Then the sheep arrived

Trees and cattle get along fine - sheep scalp everything

Cheers on the Teleport recommendation. I saw their blog years ago and donated them a very small amount of money for their effort and had a little bit of email correspondence with them. I'm not sure if they even had a youtube channel then. But I will take a look. Much more interesting than tits in a hot place. Not that I have anything against tits, quite the contrary. My fav car mag had no hot models it. I have other magazines for that :P

I watched all of the teleport vids. Pretty cool vlog. Wow their boat was a shit box! But that made it more interesting. Heaps of bears, a few guns. Some shooting but no shot bears.

Any other recommendations?

I enjoyed this one

it is a film from a neophyte sailor who joined six other young people on a 14 m boat captained by an eccentric middle aged live-aboard from Germany or Belgium I beleive

the format is around minute of film per day of the trip

I think that the experience put most of the young people off sailing for life

Eight people on board was kind of OTT. Six would have been plenty. Anyway, it seemed like the voyage was mostly pretty easy sailing.

I assume they were paying guests so he wanted to pack as many in as he could

you do not need a crew that big to complete the journey

he has done eight crossings - so maybe it is almost a business.

If you haven't found DrakeParagon yet, he has (an occasionally long winded) channel dedicated to mostly cruising his boat, and the work that goes into it. He does take pains to get the camera work & editting right, he's still posting up vids from 2013 because he won't post a vid until he gets the cuts & soundtrack juuuuuuust right. His series quizzing his rigger for an hour is worth a watch, along with his interviews of other cruisers.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOhEGypVYJG1BUiLkGfIShdmX3KotAB1u

Seriously he has hours of content, from interviewing liveaboards to drone footage of sheep herding in the Faeroe islands. My first and still fav sailing vlog channel sub.

Don't worry Dylan, you and the rest of the YBW lynch mob you were one of the torch bearers for finally drove them to set all the "gun wielders" vids to private. Congrats.

Asshole.

For anyone looking for Bixler & Krystin's sailing series, Beaches, Boats & Bears, apparently Dylan & his other mostly English sailing blokes objected to the shooting & eating of black bears. So they harassed a young sailing couple who had the GALL to post on Youtube their various endeavours of harvesting Alaska's wild bounty during the short sailing season.

Cross channel pollination has been a staple since The Green Hornet guest starred on Batman (Kato vs Robin, lulz), it's now reached sailing channels...

Why the fuck would anyone find that interesting?

I never made it past the thumbnail & merely assumed...

Rick Moore does make decent vids...they're just hidden by the other 90% of vids on his channel.

His Pplau vid with Randy West is the high end of YouTube sailing vids. And equal measure sailing awesomeness & gut wrenching.

I should like to apologise to anyone who is upset about anything I have ever said anywhere

At no time have I ever asked for a video to be taken down - nor left any rude or derogatory comments on youtube if I do not like a video I merely click away rather than entering into some sort of bile-fest

As a hack I would never ask for video to be taken down

and I admire the people for their honesty in putting it up.

I have no idea why it was taken down - I can assure you it was nothing to do with me - you credit me with more influence than I have

It is always a shame when people invent a crime to accuse you of and then condemn you for it

as for being called an arsehole above - I have been called worse

Nine years ago I made a video about bull riding

I have been on the receiving end of some quite rude emails - I stood accused of glorifying cruelty

I would also like to apologise for using Avril Lavigne for the music - it was a popular track with bullriders at the time

Dylan, I for one never thought you had anything to do with the beaches, bears etc video going away.

IIRC they said that making the videos, responding to comment etc on their blog was taking too much time and starting to destroy the pleasure they got out of sailing & hiking in Alaska, so they killed their blog. I didn't realise they'd also taken down the videos which is a shame.

The hunting was a really small part. What was really good was seeing Alaskan scenery I'll probably never see in person.

Same reason I think the series you've made is fantastic - well worth it.

If you ever think it's worth the trouble, a similar series on touring all the canals in the UK would be something else I'd watch. I know there are some, but not from a waterman's POV.

Some of the canal engineering is unbelievably impressive considering the technology available to the builders.

In the real world I am yet to encounter a situtaion where rudeness is of any help at all

Besides arsholes are pretty useful things

you can sit on them, they can be used for voiding unwanted waste, they can be used in adventurous sexual activity and some people can use them for talking out of.

It is not a big insult.

Being accused of something I did not do is not nice but we now live in world of post truth, fake news and alternative facts.

It's a little hard to be too tough on the poor bugger. I remember well the day that I picked up my first big boat with chest puffed out and great feelings of nautical superiority. I reversed out of the broker's slip into the fairway and pffffft. For the benefit of the youngsters hereabouts pfffft is the sound that your keel makes when it hits a mudbank. The boat sat there for an hour until the tide lifted it clear.

The moral of the story is firstly that the fairway behind your slip may or may not have the same depth as the slip and secondly that any sailor who says he has not run aground is either a landlubber or a liar.

Perhaps the vast success of the Sailing Channels goes beyond a pair of nice jugs, or snorkeling the coral reefs or dolphins on the bow. It may even have little to do with sailing itself. These people who post videos represent the freedom to take and go, to travel in an exotic and uncommon (and obsolete) form of transportation, to discover the planet. Possibilities that very few people have access to for the most diverse reasons. I am sure they tap into a big audience of non-sailing dreamers that don't have the same privilege.

It's also very moving- Britain moving into prosperity from austerity - bosoms out, and we've never had it so good.

My childhood dinghy was an abomination designed by the DIY guru Barry "Bodger" Bucknell: called a Puffin. My Dad built it with love, optimism and stitch and glue - the boat itself was an embarrassment to me, as rings were sailed around me by, well, anyone. Ungrateful little shit that I was, eh?

puffsail.jpg

My family's first "big boat" was a Silhouette Mark II, plywood built as was proper

h20_sil_ad_lge.jpg

I remember being a bit baffled by the Mirror Offshore at the time - especially the variant with the huge (relatively) jib.

Dylan - in an embarrassing admission: I've never watched one of your films to the end - partly because life is not my own - but I would be very upset if you didn't continue the chronicling of our little places up creeks and on islands. So I'll go in and give a good tap now, just because the coastline needs you.
