After watching the "Sail into Freedom" guy get a hole blown in his boat I sure as hell don't want it happening to me. @Innocent Bystander had to have his hull peeled after a strike.

I have bonding all over the place that ties to the keel and to the engine...which leads to the shaft, which goes in the water.  This all seems very logical and reassuring but I'm not placing a whole lot of faith in it.

I guess overall we were about equal.  His is a higher end monohull (being a bit vague as don't want to out the boat since a few here know me and where my boat is and thus could ID his) so everything costs more on his.  Ignoring $s and just looking at damage, if you recall I had a lot of little structural damage (many small pin holes across all 3 hulls) and some electrical issues.  He had more concentrated (but less overall) structural damage and more widespread electrical - very high end systems - drama.  I always laugh at those who claim to understand and know how to deal with lighting strikes.  My only answer is to have good insurance. And if there was a better answer than that insurance would require it.  But I am just a hick from the sticks trying to find my way LOL.

That aside, Italy is alluring to me. We've found some interesting Youtube stuff  on buying houses (so this isn't REALLy a thread drift)in Italy.

I don't think we'd ever do it but my partner loves to consider it for a winter getaway for us and a vacation rental to offset the costs.

Wow, what a beautiful area. I've yet to be anywhere south of Rome, but I hope I get to southern Italy. Are you working with a language program (if so, tell me how it works)?

I've mentioned our son lived in Rome and went to school there for 4 years. He was at an American Uni. which doesn't speak Italian.

He took a class and learned the language though. Amazingly, nearly none of the US students learn Italian. He picked up the Roman style of course, from the instructors. That made his time there much richer, you could tell as he interacted with locals he'd come to friend. 

I love food! I don't think I've ever eaten anything in Italy, that wasn't superb. The Italians just know food.

Bonding protects people inside from side arcs, it doesn't protect the boat.

Hmmm. I asked somebody what size for the plate in hull/water for a boat in fresh or blackish water. I was given an ABS standard (I think). It was LOL big and impossible on a multihull. Even the high end monohull system didn’t meet that standard. For salt water yes but not for upper Chesapeake blackish/fresh. I want to be clear. I don’t have the answer. I am simply highly suspicious of those that claim they so with re lighting protection that works.

That is a pretty good rant.  I've watched a few of their videos, and think "well, that's not the way I would have done that", but they are young and learning.  In my mid 20s my brother and I renovated a house, looking back 30 years later I think "well, that's not the way I'd do it today"...

I have a mate who's "youtube famous" in a completely different industry and he had to move house because people started showing up at his home, and they have tracked him down because you could see enough significant landmarks to tell what area he lived in (he had been pretty active in hiding his address) but people still tracked him down and showed up.

That's the price of fame.

Most of it is just putting up with people asking for autographs at the airport, but there are crazies out there who do the wrong thing.

This is why the movie super-stars get paid so much money, they don't get $20 million because they are a great actor in the latest Avengers movie, they get $20 million because 500 million people will see the latest Avengers movie and as a main actor your life will never be the same because of it, they will need security guards when in public, gated housing, they can never go to the shops again without being harassed etc.

I completely agree with your analysis. The end result is no less shocking. And I think it's way more than 1%.

Sailing/refit channels is still a relatively confidential domain. They don't have that many views per vids. Even La Vagabonde means peanuts compared to an average gaming channel. Plus the audience is supposed to be a bit more mature, at least in age. The normal/fucked up comment ratio on that sort of platform is never good. And while everyone gets a good share of those, females are very generously served. Being anonymous allows sociopaths to indulge in their talent, and it has revealed that this is not an endangered species. This debate goes far beyond our little floating activity anyway.

well that's pretty harsh.  they are certainly regular folks but they are also cruising and living in remote island/sea places so not so uninspired as to not be able accomplish that.  and, i never heard them say epic.

We own a wine aerator. It was a gift! We only use it ironically. Also many cheese knives, a marble rolling pin, and a pizza peel (for those 3am post-boff snacks). 

I like the Wynns. For the same reasons I like the aforementioned rescue kitten YouTubes: They are super cute, feisty, harmless, and soothing in a world full of anger, spite, and violence. They come from priviledge, and few of us here can escape that charge, but they are self-aware enuf to know it and they generally try to behave decently and tread lightly. They put in the hours and get better at things. If their curiosity seldom qualifies as intellectual, they still take an interest in the world and people around them. They seem kind, happy, and in love. I`m not sure on what basis we ought ask more.

They have only made 26 videos before this one (their 27th episode) before they "ask the community to contribute" because "they would love it" and wish they could "give us extra features the you don't get 'just watching the videos'".

This channel doesn't even go sailing in all their videos, just a handful of them unfortunately.

I won't lie, their leading star isn't exactly a supermodel either with some pretty questionable tatts and they have some nothing of a 35 foot 4ksb, but really just spend all their time gawking at other peoples boats and doing boat tours (which they have some weird fettish for windows, naturalists eh?).
