Lion 800 - New project of the yacht and stages of construction

Recommended Posts

Lion 870 is now in the final stage of construction, now is the process of painting. Now we have launched the serial production of the smallest of the boats, Lion 550 , so I spend a lot of time at the shipyard. But in the near future I will write in detail about all the work that was done on the yacht Lion 870.

Now the boat looks like this)))

Hit the site but not much new info.

Can I still buy the kit? I think I expressed interest in it last year...

Lion 550 now is also located at the finishing stage, and in the spring will be launched, hull and equipment of the yacht is ready, we are now in the process of painting the hull and manufacture of dies for plastic versions of boats.

A detailed video that shows the process in a phased manner building completely I already withdrew, now comes the installation video, unfortunately this process is not very fast so as to be processed 9.5 hours of video that took all the basic operations on construction yachts.

The video contains all basic operation since installation frames and ending with full glass hull pasting.

I can offer a kit or project with files for cutting.

A bit of news about the Lion 870
The construction of the boat was completed, the yacht was launched, the boat became exactly on the design waterline, showed excellent driving performance when sailing and under the motor.

 more about building here

Best looking boat on the lake ? Are you the most modern sailing yacht producer in the Ukraine ?
What place is it sailing ?

PS, freeboard a tad high, and personally I like more rig. But I know every boat is a compromise.

Indeed, the boat has a somewhat inflated side, but it is a cruising yacht and it was designed to provide maximum travel comfort.

Why is the paint failing and salt staining so bad? Is that exterior latex paint in salt water? When I zoomed in you see it at the aft chine especially. Needs some of those modern flat fenders.:)

I love chines and I like the design. Painting the hull is a good idea to reduce the impact of the freeboard.

This is not the final coloring, this is only the first coat of paint, in a hurry they did not manage to do everything right, in the spring the yacht will be painted and everything will be beautiful. :-)

There is one more nuance, I build this Lion 550 , and the Lion 870 was built by an amateur according to my drawings :-)

I have been designing and building yachts for more than twenty years, and he did not build anything before, this is his first experience.

That is a bit of a common drawback for smallish plywood boats. They tend to have a flattish bottom and be relatively lightweight, so the draft of the hull is relatively low and then the architect has to choose between a high roof or lot of freeboard.

Boat is probably light, I am not sure that they need that much rig.

Older design, the designer went the big roof route to keep freeboard low :

@Unik, your boats must be a pleasure to sail!

In fact, the side is not as high as it seems at first glance, if you look at the picture, both Armagnac and Lion 870 yachts have approximately the same side height and frontal resistance, but the Lion 870 has significantly more internal volume and a longer waterline .

I think that overlay is misleading - unless the Lion 870 has a transom that's immersed by about 300mm, you haven't lined up the waterlines on the two drawings - so actually the Lion 870 has significantly more freeboard than your composite drawing makes it appear to have.

I am not trying to mislead anyone, indeed the Lion 870 has a lesser draft with a hull of about 150 mm, not 300 mm, when I did the overlay, I meant the total height of the side of the yacht.

All proportions and scale are correct.

Indeed but as you have more modern hull (straighter lines) it ends up floating higher. It is alright for me, you just designed the boat functionally instead of "by eye". Also the boat will be drier, a really useful feature on a 8m boat... These Armagnac were really good boats, I find it really cool that some contemporary designers are updating the concept.

Given both boats displace about 2.2t, both boats have to have the same immersed volume.  The difference is how that volume is distributed.  The 870 has a longer waterline and more beam. So that immersed shape is longer, wider and shallower.  The Armagnac’s is shorter, narrower and deeper.

to have the same cabin sole to overhead distance the 870 will end up having more freeboard and the top of the cabin will be higher off the water.  That’s the trade off/compromise you end up with.  But as Unik points out, you get more interior volume as a result of that trade.

You are right, a large length along the waterline changes the distribution of displacement, as a result we get less draft.

with all this, the boat on the water looks very attractive, the builder promised to send me a short video about sailing the Lion 870, I think after that the talk about the high side will disappear. :-)))

Now Lion series kits are available in Australia, we have partnered and opened a representative office in Bundaberg, Queensland Australia. Now available kit Lion 550 cut from quality plywood, in the future I hope the whole line of kit yachts will be available.

A Bruce anchor?

The dude steering looks a little crunched...

Yes Bruce anchor, it holds well and is conveniently stored on board.

The helm consoles are made of aluminum and are well fixed, it is not necessary to make them massive enough to make them durable :-)

Lion 870 this year was painted, a non-slip coating was made on the deck, after which it successfully reached the yacht club on a trailer and went out on the water, a few photos of this event.

Дякую :-)

Several boats are currently in the design phase, two of them, the Lion 900 and Lion 1050, will have an aluminum version.

If there is interest in the construction of a yacht from a sandwich, I will make such an option, I plan to release the project 1050 in the summer
